Chapter 14 - THE COORDINATOR

Meredith Vale was warm, efficient, and seemingly tireless.
During my deployment, she had organized care packages, scheduled family calls, and offered to help Derek find childcare.
She had written me cheerful messages about how Lily was thriving.
I pulled up those emails now and reread every sentence.
She knew my unit, my travel dates, Lily's preschool, and the details of our home life.
She had asked for information that seemed innocent because supporting military families was her job.
That access had made her valuable to anyone intent on harming us.
Colonel Shaw referred the evidence to the proper military and civilian authorities.
They placed Meredith on administrative leave pending investigation.
Her attorney denied wrongdoing.
Then she disappeared before investigators could complete a scheduled interview.
Bell found her abandoned car at a commuter lot.
A search of her authorized office workspace recovered routine papers and a receipt for a courier service, but no confession or proof of her location.
"We have a suspect who may also be in danger," Desai warned.
I knew she was right, but I wanted someone to tell me there was only one monster to catch.
There wasn't.
The network consisted of people who lied, people who profited, people who looked away, and perhaps people who had been coerced.
The distinctions would matter in court, even if all their choices had helped put Lily at risk.
That weekend, Lily asked to visit a playground again.
I went with her and a trained protector who kept a respectful distance.
She ran toward the swings, stopped, and looked back to make sure I was following.
"I'm right here," I called.
For the first time she ran without waiting for a second reassurance.
I stored the moment in my mind as something nobody could take.
On Monday, a message arrived from an unknown email address.
It contained three photographs of Ruth sitting in a motel room, alive but visibly distressed.
The message demanded the memory card from the bridge.
Investigators already held the card, and I had no authority to surrender it.
The sender gave us forty-eight hours and warned that contacting police would have consequences.
Desai took the threat seriously and arranged an appropriate response.
I was told not to negotiate independently.
As the team studied metadata and background details, I noticed something in the second image.
A curtain reflected in the motel mirror had a distinctive orange stripe.
I had seen it years earlier when Derek took us to an inexpensive roadside lodge during a trip to North Carolina.
I found the old family photograph in cloud storage.
The curtains matched.
So did the shape of the bedside lamp.
Investigators contacted the lodge.
The manager reported that a woman had checked in under the name Margaret Cross.
Ruth's middle name was Margaret.

But the credit card used to book the room belonged to a trust associated with Meredith Vale.
