Chapter 2: The Man Who Couldn't Hide

Every face in the ballroom turned toward the man Emily had just pointed at.
His name was Daniel Brooks.
A respected real estate developer.
Married for twelve years.
Father of two young daughters.
For one endless second...
No one moved.
Daniel remained frozen in his chair, the champagne glass trembling in his hand.
Beside him, his wife, Victoria, slowly rose to her feet.
"What is she talking about?"
Her voice was quiet.
Too quiet.
Emily didn't answer.
Instead, Grant stepped forward and opened the red folder again.
"This investigation began four months ago," he said calmly.
"We followed Mrs. Carter's husband."
He placed photograph after photograph across the anniversary cake.
Eric entering hotels with Natalie.
Natalie leaving Daniel's downtown apartment.
Security footage.
Restaurant receipts.
Travel records.
Phone logs.
The ballroom had become a courtroom.
Natalie's breathing grew shallow.
"Those pictures prove nothing," she shouted.
Grant calmly removed another envelope.
"This does."
He handed Victoria a second laboratory report.
Victoria's eyes scanned the page.
Her hand began to shake.
"This DNA test compares fetal samples obtained during your recent prenatal examination with both Mr. Eric Carter and Mr. Daniel Brooks."
She looked up.
Her lips parted.
"Eric is excluded."
Silence.
"Daniel Brooks is confirmed as the biological father."
The report slipped from Victoria's fingers.
Daniel closed his eyes.
"I never wanted this to happen," he whispered.
Natalie spun toward him.
"You promised you would never tell anyone!"
The entire ballroom gasped.
Without realizing it...
She had confessed.
Eric stared at Natalie as though seeing her for the first time.
"You lied to me..."
Natalie reached for him.
"I was trying to protect us."
Eric stepped away.
"There was never an 'us.'"
For the first time that evening...
Emily felt nothing.
No anger.
No satisfaction.
Only relief.
The truth finally belonged to everyone.
