Chapter 1: The Word That Stopped the Music

The silence inside the ballroom felt heavier than the crystal chandeliers hanging overhead.

Noah buried his face against Emma's shoulder and refused to let go.

"Mommy."

The word echoed through Logan Mercer’s mind.

For two years, his son had barely spoken.

Yet tonight, in front of hundreds of guests, he had spoken clearly.

And he had called a stranger his mother.

Logan stepped forward slowly.

"Emma," he said carefully. "How long have you worked here?"

The young housekeeper looked terrified.

"Two weeks, sir."

Vanessa folded her arms.

"This is ridiculous," she said sharply. "He's confused."

But Noah immediately shook his head.

"No."

The room froze again.

Another word.

Another miracle.

Emma's eyes filled with tears.

She gently brushed Noah's curls away from his forehead.

Something about the movement made Logan's stomach tighten.

It looked familiar.

Too familiar.

Then Noah reached into Emma's uniform pocket.

Everyone stared.

From inside, he pulled out a small silver locket.

Emma gasped.

She hadn't even realized it was missing.

The moment Logan saw the locket, the color drained from his face.

He knew it.

Because years ago he had given an identical locket to Noah's mother, Olivia.

The woman everyone believed had died after childbirth.

The engagement party was over.

And Logan suddenly needed answers.
