Chapter 5 - THE NOTICE

Aaron reached my suite twelve minutes after dinner ended.

He did not knock politely this time.

He pounded on the door until I opened it.

Eleanor stood beside him.

Jasmine was behind them.

Daniel Cho hovered several feet away in the hallway, clearly wishing he were anywhere else.

Aaron held his phone in one hand.

"What did you do?"

I stepped aside.

"You should come in before you wake the entire floor."

"Don't play games with me."

"Then stop shouting in a hallway."

He walked inside.

Eleanor followed.

Jasmine tried to enter too.

I held up one hand.

"Not you."

Her eyes widened.

Aaron turned.

"She comes with me."

"This concerns my family trust."

"It concerns my company."

"Then call your lawyer."

Jasmine crossed her arms.

"I am the chief strategy officer."

"As of forty minutes ago."

Her face tightened.

"And already doing beautifully."

Eleanor stepped between us.

"Enough of this childishness."

I looked at her.

"She is wearing my grandmother's pin."

Eleanor glanced at Jasmine's dress.

For one second, something like embarrassment crossed her face.

Then it disappeared.

"Aaron shouldn't have given it away."

"Thank you."

"But this is not the time."

"It's never the time when the person being hurt is me."

Aaron slammed the suite door shut.

"What is Clause 14?"

I almost smiled.

Rebecca had been right.

He did not remember.

"You signed it."

"Eight years ago."

"Apparently signatures matter when they're yours."

His eyes flashed.

"What is it?"

I walked into the study.

He followed.

Eleanor followed him.

Daniel remained near the door.

Jasmine stood in the hallway for several seconds before Aaron waved her in anyway.

I noticed that.

So did Eleanor.

Aaron placed his phone on the desk and opened Rebecca's notice.

"It says the Whitmore Trust is asserting reactivated voting rights."

"Correct."

"On what basis?"

"Undisclosed related-party transactions."

Jasmine's face went still.

"That's ridiculous."

I looked at her.

"Is Vale Strategic Consulting related to you?"

"I told you, I advise an investment vehicle."

"That wasn't my question at six o'clock either."

Aaron stepped forward.

"Those contracts were reviewed by counsel."

Daniel finally spoke.

"Not by the audit committee."

Everyone turned toward him.

Aaron's expression became dangerous.

"What did you say?"

Daniel swallowed.

"The payments crossed the threshold for committee review."

"You approved them."

"I processed them after receiving executive authorization."

"From me."

"Yes."

"Then what's the problem?"

Daniel looked at Jasmine.

"The problem is beneficial ownership."

Silence.

Jasmine laughed softly.

"This is absurd."

Daniel did not laugh.

"We asked for the ownership schedule three times."

"Legal had it."

"Legal says they requested it from you."

Aaron turned toward Jasmine.

It was the first time I had seen him look at her with anything other than admiration all day.

"Did you provide it?"

"Of course."

"When?"

"I don't remember the date."

Daniel pulled out his phone.

"There is no copy in the data room."

Jasmine's voice sharpened.

"Are you accusing me of something?"

"I'm stating what's missing."

Aaron raised both hands.

"Stop."

He looked at me.

"You sent this notice without speaking to me."

"You tried to get me to sign away my voting rights without letting me keep a copy."

Eleanor stared at Aaron.

"Is that true?"

He ignored her.

"You don't understand the restructuring."

"Then explain why the Whitmore Trust goes from seventeen point eight percent voting power to one point two."

His face changed.

Jasmine looked at him quickly.

Daniel's head snapped up.

"What?"

Aaron's voice dropped.

"Where did you see that?"

I knew immediately how important the page was.

"Does it matter?"

"That document is confidential."

"So it exists."

He realized the mistake too late.

Daniel stepped closer.

"Aaron, why wasn't that cap table included in the finance package?"

"Because it's preliminary."

"The board votes tomorrow."

"I know when the board votes."

Daniel's face had gone pale.

"If the trust's protected block is being diluted, we need counsel to review the legacy agreements."

Aaron pointed at him.

"You work for me."

Daniel became very still.

"I work for the company."

Those six words changed the room.

Aaron's face reddened.

"Get out."

Daniel looked at me once.

Then he left.

Eleanor closed the study door after him.

"Aaron, what have you done?"

"Nothing."

"Then why is Alyssa's trust sending legal notices during dinner?"

"Because Alyssa is emotional."

I laughed.

I could not help it.

All three of them looked at me.

"There it is," I said.

Aaron glared.

"What?"

"Your answer to everything."

"You're blowing up a corporate transaction because you're jealous of Jasmine."

The accusation was so perfectly convenient that for a second I simply stared at him.

Then I looked at Jasmine.

"Take off the pin."

She touched it instinctively.

"What?"

"Take off my grandmother's pin."

Aaron stepped forward.

"Alyssa."

"No."

My voice rose for the first time.

Not into a scream.

Into something sharper.

"You do not get to call me jealous while your employee is wearing my family's jewelry, living in the villa reserved for my marriage, sitting in my seat on your plane, receiving millions through a company with her name on it, and helping you prepare documents that contain forged initials on my consent page."

Eleanor's head turned toward Aaron.

"Forged what?"

Jasmine went white.

Aaron stared at me.

"Nobody forged anything."

"Then tell me who wrote A.P. on page forty-six."

He said nothing.

Eleanor looked between them.

"Aaron?"

"It's a clerical mark."

"Whose clerical mark?"

"I don't know."

"That's not good enough."

For the first time all weekend, Eleanor was not speaking to me like I was the problem.

Aaron heard it too.

"Mother, stay out of this."

"You brought me here."

"For the retreat."

"You put me in the villa with her."

Eleanor pointed at Jasmine.

"You made the entire company watch you humiliate your wife, and now I am learning there are legal documents with Alyssa's initials on them that she says she didn't write."

Jasmine took a step backward.

"I should go."

I looked at her.

"Yes."

Aaron turned.

"No. Stay."

That was his second mistake of the night.

Eleanor's face changed.

She had defended Jasmine when Jasmine was useful.

Now she was beginning to see her as a threat to the family itself.

"Aaron," Eleanor said slowly, "send her out."

He stared at his mother.

"She is part of this transaction."

"Exactly."

Jasmine's eyes narrowed.

"I don't appreciate being spoken about like I'm not here."

Eleanor looked her up and down.

"Then give Alyssa her pin and leave."

The room went silent.

Jasmine looked at Aaron.

He looked away.

That was all it took.

She unfastened the pin and placed it on the desk.

Not in my hand.

On the desk.

Then she walked out.

Eleanor followed her with her eyes until the door closed.

"How much money has she received?"

Aaron turned sharply.

"This is not your business."

"Everything that can destroy my son's company becomes my business."

I picked up the pin.

"Six point four million we know about."

Eleanor's face drained.

Aaron looked at me with open fury.

"You had no right to tell her that."

"Twelve million more went toward a Manhattan penthouse."

Eleanor sat down.

"Dear God."

"Stop it," Aaron snapped.

I looked at him.

"Is the penthouse yours?"

"No."

"Jasmine's?"

"It's a corporate residence."

"Then why is the property company managed by her mother?"

His silence lasted too long.

Eleanor closed her eyes.

"Aaron."

"It is a legitimate business arrangement."

"Then the audit will prove that," I said.

He turned toward me.

"There will be no audit."

"The notice demands one."

"I'll have it blocked."

"On what grounds?"

"You're abusing a dormant clause to interfere with company operations."

"Then challenge it."

"I will."

"Good."

His expression shifted.

He was not used to me saying good when he threatened me.

Eleanor stood.

"We need to stop this before the board meets."

"There is nothing to stop," Aaron said.

"Alyssa withdraws the notice."

I looked at her.

"No."

She stared at me.

"Alyssa, think about what you're doing."

"I am."

"The stock price could collapse."

"Then perhaps Aaron should not have used company money to fund secret entities."

"We don't know that he did anything illegal."

"That's what the audit is for."

Eleanor's voice softened.

"Family matters should stay inside the family."

I looked at her for a long time.

"You told me this afternoon I wasn't staying in the family residence."

She flinched.

"Don't be petty."

"I'm not."

I placed my grandmother's pin carefully inside my handbag.

"I'm being precise."

Aaron walked to the door.

"Eight a.m."

"I'll be there."

He looked back.

"And Alyssa?"

"Yes?"

"If you walk into that boardroom and try to activate those voting rights, you will regret it."

Eleanor whispered his name.

I studied the man I had once promised to love for the rest of my life.

"Is that a threat?"

"It's reality."

"No, Aaron."

I smiled.

"Reality is what happens after people stop believing your version of the story."

He left.

Eleanor followed slowly.

I waited until the suite door closed.

Then I opened my phone.

There were three missed calls from Daniel Cho.

I called him back.

He answered in a whisper.

"I found something."

"What?"

"The payment approvals."

"We already know Aaron approved them."

"Not these."

I heard a door close on his end.

"Someone used your digital authorization token six months ago."

My entire body went still.

"I haven't had a company token in three years."

"I know."

"What did it authorize?"

Daniel took a breath.

"The first transfer to Vale Strategic."

I gripped the phone.

"Daniel, are you saying they made it look like I approved the payment?"

"Yes."

A pause.

May you like

Then he said the part that made the room seem suddenly colder.

"And the authentication log says the token was used from Aaron's home office."
