Chapter 16 - THE COPY

Nolan's attorney arrived forty-three minutes later.

Until then, no one touched the drive.

No one asked Nolan another substantive question.

Rebecca insisted on that.

"If the evidence matters, we do this cleanly," she said.

Aaron paced outside the maintenance office like a man trying to outrun every decision that had led him there.

I sat near the window and watched rainwater drip from the edge of the garage roof.

At some point, Eleanor arrived.

She saw Aaron.

He saw her.

Neither moved toward the other.

That distance told its own story.

Nolan's lawyer was a compact woman named Priya Shah who looked at the room, looked at her client, and immediately asked everyone except federal investigators and company counsel to step outside.

We did.

Two hours later, Melissa called us back.

The drive had been voluntarily provided to investigators and the company under a written preservation arrangement.

A forensic image would be created before anyone reviewed the contents.

Nolan had also agreed to cooperate through counsel.

That did not make him innocent.

It made him useful.

By midnight, the first verified files began appearing in the review room.

Jasmine had been organized.

Too organized.

She kept folders by project, person, and leverage.

A folder labeled AP contained screenshots of Aaron's private messages, recordings of conversations, travel itineraries, and notes about his moods.

A folder labeled EP contained Eleanor's passport scan, signature samples, and photographs of the bracelet key.

A folder labeled WHITMORE contained every trust agreement Eleanor had taken from my archive cabinet.

And a folder labeled EXIT contained a spreadsheet.

Daniel opened it.

The first column listed projected sources of money.

Vale severance.

Advisory equity sale.

Offshore contingency pool.

Property liquidation.

The second column listed target dates.

The final column was labeled CLEAN BREAK.

Aaron stood behind Daniel.

"Scroll down."

Daniel did.

Near the bottom was a line that read PERSONAL TRANSITION - Q4.

Beside it was a note.

AP becomes liability after Whitmore transfer.

Avoid long-term dependency.

Aaron stared at the words.

No one needed to explain them.

Jasmine had not been planning a life with him.

She had been planning an exit from him.

He laughed softly.

"Liability."

Eleanor closed her eyes.

I felt no satisfaction.

Watching someone discover they had been used does not become beautiful simply because they once used you.

Daniel opened another file.

This one was a timeline.

It began eleven months earlier, three weeks after Jasmine joined Aaron's strategy team.

Week 1: Establish access.

Week 4: Become indispensable to AP.

Week 7: Map Whitmore restrictions.

Week 11: Identify family pressure points.

Week 13: EP receptive.

Week 18: AP discussing separation.

Week 21: Push restructuring.

Week 27: Secure advisory upside.

Week 31: Pregnancy leverage if needed.

I felt my skin go cold.

Aaron stepped back from the screen.

"This is psychotic."

Rebecca's voice was calm.

"It is evidence."

He looked at her.

"She planned all of it."

"Some of it."

Aaron frowned.

Rebecca pointed at the timeline.

"She didn't make you discuss separation."

Silence.

"She didn't make you call Alyssa's trust a leash."

Aaron looked away.

"She didn't make you promise seven percent."

"I know."

"She didn't make you prepare a restructuring that reduced Alyssa to one point two percent."

"I know."

Rebecca leaned back.

"Don't let discovering that you were manipulated become a new way to erase your own choices."

Aaron stared at the floor.

"I said I know."

For once, I believed him.

The next folder was worse.

It contained voice memos Jasmine had recorded for herself.

Not conversations.

Notes.

She spoke while driving, walking, or sitting alone.

Most were mundane.

Meeting reminders.

Names.

Investor preferences.

Then one appeared under the date of the first Vale Strategic payment.

Daniel pressed play.

Jasmine's voice filled the room.

"EP got the token."

A pause.

"Nolan says legacy credential still validates because nobody fully removed the Whitmore profile."

Another pause.

"AP explicitly said not to use it, so this cannot trace back to him."

Aaron looked at me.

I heard the vindication he wanted to feel.

Then the memo continued.

"He'll be furious if he finds out, but by the time he does, the advisory contract will be too embedded to unwind without admitting the relationship."

Daniel stopped the recording.

The room was silent.

That line explained the trap.

Jasmine had relied on Aaron's misconduct as camouflage for her own.

Once he secretly approved a contract benefiting his mistress, exposing her fraud would require exposing himself.

She had understood him well.

Perhaps better than he understood himself.

Melissa opened an email chain.

"This helps distinguish the conduct."

She summarized the emerging picture.

Aaron knowingly concealed Jasmine's beneficial interest.

Aaron knowingly pursued a restructuring designed to dilute my voting rights and transfer protected intellectual property before independent review.

Aaron knowingly discussed a future equity grant to Jasmine.

But the cloned credentials, offshore transfers, altered severance contract, and fabricated pregnancy appeared to have been directed by Jasmine and Nolan without Aaron's authorization.

Eleanor's role remained its own category.

She had knowingly used my token.

She had knowingly supplied my trust documents.

She had knowingly helped Jasmine communicate outside company channels.

But she also appeared to have become a target once Jasmine collected enough identity information to place the Singapore beneficiary account in her name.

No one in the room was innocent.

They were simply guilty of different betrayals.

At two fifteen in the morning, the investigators asked to speak with Eleanor again.

She left with counsel.

Aaron and I remained on opposite sides of the room.

Daniel kept reviewing files.

Then he stopped.

"Alyssa."

I looked up.

"What?"

"There's a folder with your name."

Aaron straightened.

"What is in it?"

Daniel did not answer immediately.

The folder was labeled ALYSSA - RESPONSE MODEL.

Inside was a document describing my expected reactions to different provocations.

Public slight: likely silence.

Private exclusion: confrontation with AP, low external escalation.

Family pressure from EP: high compliance probability.

Threat to marriage: likely concession if framed as protecting AP/company.

Public affair exposure: emotional risk, delay transaction until signature secured.

I stared at the screen.

Someone had modeled me like a customer behavior problem.

Not Jasmine alone.

The language looked corporate.

Strategic.

Familiar.

At the bottom of the document, the author field showed JVALE.

But the comments pane contained another set of initials.

AP.

Aaron's face went white.

"I never saw that."

Daniel opened the comment history.

The first comment from AP read:

She hates public scenes. Use private pressure, not embarrassment.

The second read:

Eleanor can usually get her to compromise.

The third was worse.

If she thinks saying no could hurt employees, she will sign.

I could not move.

Aaron stared at the screen.

"I don't remember writing those."

Rebecca looked at the metadata.

"The comments were imported from a shared strategy deck."

Daniel searched the archive.

He found it fifteen minutes later.

The comments were real.

They came from an earlier discussion about stakeholder management during a proposed trust renegotiation.

Aaron had written them nine months earlier.

Before the affair had become public.

Before the forged transfers.

Before row five.

He had described my compassion as a pressure point.

I stood.

"Alyssa," he said.

I walked toward the door.

"Please."

I stopped.

He looked wrecked.

"I was talking about negotiation strategy."

"I know."

"I wasn't planning to humiliate you."

"You told her how to move me."

"I thought we were negotiating governance."

"You told another woman that if she made me afraid for employees, I would surrender."

"I didn't know what she would become."

I looked at him.

"You knew what I was."

He said nothing.

"You knew I cared."

My voice shook.

"And instead of protecting that, you documented how to use it against me."

I left.

Aaron followed me into the hallway but stopped several feet away.

"What do you want me to do?"

I turned.

"About what?"

"The company."

"Cooperate."

"I am."

"Then keep doing it."

"About us."

I looked at him.

"Nothing."

His face changed.

"There has to be something."

"Why?"

"Because nine years can't become nothing in four days."

"They didn't."

I stepped closer, lowering my voice.

"They became what they became over nine years."

He swallowed.

"I still love you."

The words would have broken me a month earlier.

Now they made me tired.

"Maybe you do."

"I do."

"Then you loved me while teaching Jasmine how to pressure me."

He flinched.

"You loved me while planning to dilute my trust."

"You loved me while sleeping with someone else in the house we shared."

"You loved me while letting your mother tell me not to embarrass myself because I wanted my seat back."

My voice stayed steady.

"Love does not become harmless just because the person causing damage insists it was present."

Aaron looked down.

"I don't know how to live with what I did."

There was a time when that sentence would have activated every instinct in me.

Comfort him.

Reassure him.

Tell him people made mistakes.

Tell him he was more than his worst decision.

I felt those instincts rise.

Then I let them pass.

"You'll have to learn."

He looked up.

"Without you?"

"Yes."

The word hurt both of us.

That did not make it wrong.

He nodded slowly.

"Okay."

It was the quietest surrender I had ever heard from him.

I turned away again.

Outside, dawn was beginning to lighten the rain clouds over the mountains.

I had not slept properly in three days.

I was exhausted enough that the truth felt clean.

Aaron had not authorized the stolen millions.

He had not invented the false pregnancy.

He had not told Nolan to clone my credential.

Those facts mattered.

So did the fact that Jasmine's entire scheme had grown inside a door Aaron opened himself.

He had taught her where my weak points were.

She had simply pressed harder than he expected.

My phone vibrated as I reached the elevator.

A news alert appeared.

JASMINE VALE TO SPEAK PUBLICLY AT 10 A.M.

The subheadline was worse.

FORMER PRESCOTT EXECUTIVE SAYS SHE WAS MANIPULATED BY CEO AND TARGETED BY HIS BILLIONAIRE WIFE.

I stared at it.

Rebecca joined me.

"Don't respond yet."

"I wasn't going to."

The elevator doors opened.

Then my phone buzzed again.

A preview clip from Jasmine's interview had been posted.

She sat in a gray studio wearing no jewelry and almost no makeup.

Her voice trembled perfectly.

"I lost my baby after the pressure began."

I stopped breathing.

Rebecca whispered one word.

"No."

May you like

Jasmine looked directly into the camera.

"And Alyssa Prescott knew exactly what she was doing to me."
