Chapter 2 — The Price of Pride

The silence inside the restaurant felt heavier than stone.

No one reached for their food.

No one dared to speak.

Lucía's father stared at Javier as though he were looking at a stranger.

"You... own this place?" he asked again, his voice barely above a whisper.

Javier nodded.

"I became the owner six months ago."

"But... why are you wearing a waiter's uniform?"

Javier glanced around the dining room.

"Because I started my life as one."

"I promised myself that no matter how successful I became, I would never forget the people who stood beside me when I had nothing."

The elderly waitress smiled through tears.

"When the previous owner went bankrupt, we all thought we'd lose our jobs."

"Mr. Javier paid every debt."

"He even covered the medical bills for my husband."

Another employee stepped forward.

"He refused to fire anyone."

"He said families depended on these paychecks."

Several guests slowly lowered their heads.

The father-in-law remembered every cruel word he had spoken.

Every family dinner.

Every insult.

Every time he called Javier a failure.

For years, he had measured a man's worth by the size of his wallet.

Yet the richest man in the room had been serving everyone with a smile.

Including the man who had humiliated him.

Lucía reached for Javier's hand.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

"You never had to prove anything to me."

Javier smiled gently.

"I wasn't proving anything."

"I was protecting our peace."
