Chapter 12 - The Letter in the Bedroom

I carried the envelope downstairs and called Veronica before opening it.

She told me to photograph the front, note where I found it, and preserve the original.

Then I unfolded the letter.

Rebecca, it began, if you're reading this, it means someone has told you that I married you for the trust.

I read the next line twice.

It wasn't supposed to become what it became.

The letter did not confess every act I feared.

It described Patricia's resentment, Edwin's old grudge, and Mauro's agreement to attend the fundraiser because his mother believed I might reopen a business relationship.

He claimed he had not expected to fall in love with me.

He claimed the early months had been real.

Then he wrote that debt and pride had gradually trapped him between the life he wanted and the demands his family placed on him.

I did not know whether any of it was true.

A self-serving letter found during litigation could not undo what he had done.

But one paragraph stopped me.

There is an account my mother doesn't know about. I kept copies because I was afraid Adrian would use her against me.

Below it was a reference number and the name of a document repository.

I showed the letter to Veronica.

"Could this be genuine?"

"We'll have it examined and find out what the reference means."

Her team contacted the repository through its published channels.

The account was under Mauro's name, and access required his authorization or legal process.

We did not try to force our way in.

Instead, Veronica used the reference to frame targeted preservation requests in the pending proceedings.

A week later, Mauro's counsel offered a settlement meeting.

They proposed confidentiality, mutual non-disparagement, and a payment large enough to fund a lavish new life.

In exchange, Mauro would withdraw his claims and cooperate in resolving the company's problems.

I read the proposal and felt a strange sadness.

Even now, he was trying to sell me peace.

"Do we have to decide today?" I asked.

"No," Veronica said.

"And cooperation isn't something he can promise on behalf of everyone involved."

The meeting took place with both legal teams present.

Mauro avoided my eyes until the end.

Then he asked to speak briefly.

"I wrote you something," he said.

"I found it."

His expression broke for an instant.

"Then you know I loved you."

I considered the man who had once stayed awake beside me through pneumonia.

I remembered the man who used my card without asking and told his mother she could evict me.

Both memories belonged to him.

"I know you wrote those words," I said.

"Your choices are what I have to live with."

His attorney slid a second document across the table.

A disclosure schedule.

In it Mauro identified a secret account connected to Adrian Kessler.

And the account's beneficial owner was Patricia.
