Chapter 1: The Truth Beneath the Rain

Chapter 1: The Truth Beneath the Rain

The restaurant entrance remained frozen in silence.

Rain drummed against the marble steps as every guest watched the elegant woman stare at the faded photograph.

Her hands shook.

Not because she was cold.

Because she recognized every detail.

The torn sleeve she had worn that night.

The broken streetlight behind her.

The baby wrapped inside the blue blanket.

The baby she had believed was dead.

The teenage boy stepped closer.

"My mother told me to ask why you left us."

The woman's eyes filled with tears for the first time in decades.

"I didn't leave you."

The boy frowned.

"Then why didn't you come back?"

She closed her eyes.

"Because someone made sure I couldn't."

The crowd fell completely silent.

She slowly reached into her purse and removed a worn leather wallet.

Hidden inside was another photograph.

It was the other half of the same picture.

When she placed it beside his photograph, the torn edges matched perfectly.

Gasps echoed through the crowd.

"I searched for you every single year," she whispered.

"I was told both of you died in that storm."

The boy's breathing became uneven.

"My mother never lied."

"No."

The woman shook her head.

"She protected you."

"But she never knew... I was the one who had been deceived."

Before either of them could speak again...

A deep voice came from behind the crowd.

"She's telling the truth."

An elderly man stepped forward.

The former family chauffeur.

The only living witness to what had happened twenty years earlier.

And the man who had carried the secret ever since.
