Chapter 1: The Letter Nobody Was Supposed to Read

The silence around the pool felt heavier than thunder.

No one laughed anymore.

Water dripped from Lena's uniform onto the marble floor as she stood facing Cassandra.

Across the terrace, Richard Hale looked as though he had seen a ghost.

"Lena..." he whispered.

For fifteen years, he had not spoken his daughter's name in public.

Not once.

Not after the scandal.

Not after the lies.

Not after allowing everyone to believe she had simply disappeared.

Cassandra recovered first.

"This is ridiculous," she snapped. "She's lying."

But Lena calmly reached into her bag.

The crowd watched as she removed a sealed envelope.

The handwriting on the front made Richard's face lose all color.

He recognized it instantly.

It belonged to Evelyn.

Lena's grandmother.

The woman who had raised her after Richard abandoned her.

"Grandmother asked me to give you this when the truth could no longer be hidden," Lena said.

Her voice remained steady.

Richard's hands shook as he opened the letter.

The guests watched his eyes move across the page.

Then tears appeared.

The billionaire who never showed weakness suddenly looked broken.

"What does it say?" someone asked.

Richard swallowed hard.

"It says..." his voice cracked.

"It says I chose my company over my child."

The crowd fell silent.

Lena looked away.

For years she had waited to hear those words.

But they brought no satisfaction.

Only sadness.

Then she reached into her bag again.

This time she removed a flash drive.

"And this," she said, "contains evidence that the Hale Foundation has been robbed for years."

Every face turned toward Cassandra.

May you like

For the first time that night...

She looked afraid.
