Chapter 1: The Poison Hidden in Plain Sight
The ballroom remained frozen in stunned silence.
Emily's cheek burned where Victoria had struck her, but she refused to look away from Daniel.
"You're in danger," she whispered again, louder this time.
Daniel frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
Victoria stepped between them, her smile returning as if nothing had happened.
"I'm so sorry, darling. She's clearly unstable. Security found her wandering into private meeting rooms earlier today."
Several guests nodded immediately.
A maid accusing the hostess?
No one questioned which version sounded more believable.
Two security guards grabbed Emily's arms.
"Sir!" Emily cried desperately. "Don't wear the cufflinks!"
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"Cufflinks?"
For the first time that evening, Victoria's perfect smile faltered.
Only for a second.
But Daniel noticed.
Victoria laughed softly.
"My anniversary gift. I wanted it to be a surprise."
She slowly lifted the black velvet box.
Inside lay two magnificent gold cufflinks that shimmered beneath the crystal chandeliers.
The guests applauded.
Emily felt her heart sink.
No one could see the tiny poisoned needle hidden beneath one cufflink.
Only she knew it was there.
Victoria gently fastened one cufflink onto Daniel's sleeve herself.
