Chapter 5 - The Man Who Ran Before Dawn

Edwin Shaw's resignation letter gave Nathan his first living witness.

It also made Edwin the most dangerous man in New York.

By 2:15 a.m., Marcus had teams checking every property connected to the attorney.

His Manhattan apartment was empty.

His Hamptons house was dark.

His office safe had been cleared.

His passport showed no international departure.

Then Marcus found something stranger.

"He rented a storage unit in Queens six years ago."

Nathan looked up from the conference table.

"Under his own name?"

"Under his wife's maiden name."

"She's been dead ten years."

"Exactly."

Detective Mills secured a warrant before sunrise.

Nathan insisted on going with him.

Grace refused to be left behind.

"If Edwin stored anything about me, I need to see it."

Nathan wanted to argue.

Then he remembered how many choices his family had already made for her.

"You stay beside Marcus."

Grace gave him a look.

"That was not permission."

For the first time that night, Nathan almost smiled.

"No."

"Good."

Lily remained with Evelyn and two vetted security officers at the law office.

Before Nathan left, Lily grabbed his coat.

"Are you coming back?"

He knelt.

"Yes."

"Mommy says people say yes when they don't know."

Nathan glanced at Grace.

Grace looked away.

He returned his attention to Lily.

"Then I will say this instead."

He touched two fingers lightly to her little fist.

"I am going to do everything I can to come back to you."

Lily considered that.

"Okay."

The storage facility smelled of dust, concrete, and cold metal.

Unit 418 contained three filing cabinets, an old banker box, and a locked trunk.

Mills photographed everything before touching it.

The first cabinet held tax records.

The second held trust drafts.

The third held Grace's life.

Nathan opened the top drawer and stopped breathing.

Folders were labeled with dates beginning five years earlier.

Grace Miller - Residence.

Grace Miller - Employment.

Grace Miller - Medical.

Grace Miller - Contacts.

Lily Miller - Pediatric.

Grace stared at the labels.

"They followed us."

Nathan opened one file.

Inside were photographs of Grace pushing a stroller through a supermarket parking lot in Cincinnati.

Another showed her carrying Lily into a daycare center in Cleveland.

Another showed two-year-old Lily asleep against Grace's shoulder on a bus.

Nathan's hands began to shake.

He had missed every one of those days.

Someone else had watched them.

Someone else had documented them.

"Five years," Grace whispered.

She pulled out a surveillance report.

Subject has not attempted contact with Nathan Cole.

Child appears healthy.

Continue passive monitoring.

Nathan read the approval line.

R. Cole.

His father's initials.

Grace looked at him.

"He knew where we were the entire time."

Nathan felt anger burn away the last fragile loyalty he had carried toward the dead man.

"Yes."

Mills opened another folder.

"You need to see this."

Inside were payment authorizations to a private investigations company called Meridian Strategic Services.

The invoices were paid by a Kensington Capital subsidiary.

Grace's eyes widened.

"Victoria's family."

Nathan scanned the dates.

The payments continued after Richard's death.

The most recent invoice was from three weeks earlier.

"They never stopped tracking you."

Grace looked sick.

Marcus opened the locked trunk with a court-approved locksmith.

Inside were six encrypted hard drives and a small digital recorder.

Mills bagged the drives as evidence.

The recorder still had power.

A label on the back read N.C. - IF NECESSARY.

Nathan stared at his initials.

Mills put on gloves and pressed play.

Edwin Shaw's voice filled the storage unit.

"My name is Edwin Shaw."

The recording date was eight months earlier.

"I have served as counsel to Richard Cole and the Cole family trust for twenty-eight years."

Nathan listened without moving.

"If this recording is being heard, I have either decided to tell Nathan the truth or I am no longer able to do so."

Grace reached for Nathan's hand without realizing it.

He let her hold it.

Edwin continued.

"Richard learned Grace Miller was pregnant on October seventeenth, five years ago."

Nathan closed his eyes.

"He instructed me to prepare fraudulent documentation establishing her as financially unstable and psychologically dangerous."

Grace's grip tightened.

"I objected."

Edwin's recorded voice cracked.

"Then Richard showed me evidence of tax crimes committed by my son."

Mills exchanged a glance with Marcus.

"He told me my son would go to prison unless I cooperated."

The recording continued.

"I created the first draft of the custody documents."

Grace began silently crying.

"Richard intended them as leverage, not for filing."

Nathan opened his eyes.

"But Victor Kensington wanted permanent control."

Nathan's jaw hardened.

"Victoria learned about the child before Nathan did."

Grace looked at him.

"She volunteered to speak with Grace personally."

Nathan turned toward Grace.

Her face confirmed it.

The recording moved on.

"After Richard's death, I expected the operation to end."

A pause followed.

"It did not."

Edwin inhaled audibly.

"Victoria came to my office nine days after the funeral with copies of every document we had created."

Nathan felt cold.

"She told me the marriage would proceed and the child would remain invisible."

Grace whispered.

"Oh my God."

"When I refused to continue, she showed me photographs of my granddaughter leaving school."

Mills cursed under his breath.

"Since that day, I have helped maintain fraudulent records to protect my family."

Nathan leaned closer to the recorder.

"Two months ago, Grace Miller applied for domestic employment at Nathan Cole's residence."

Everyone in the unit went still.

"Victoria discovered the application before Nathan did."

Grace stared at Nathan.

"She knew from the beginning."

The recording continued.

"She ordered me to reactivate the custody file."

Nathan's anger became almost unbearable.

"I delayed."

A long silence came from the recorder.

Then Edwin spoke more quietly.

"I now believe Victoria intends to kill Grace and the child before the wedding."

Grace's knees weakened.

Nathan caught her.

Edwin's final words came slowly.

"There is one document Richard kept outside the trust files."

Nathan leaned closer.

"It is the only document that can prove why the Kensington agreement was created."

The recording clicked with static.

"I moved it after Richard died."

Another pause.

"Nathan, if you are hearing this, do not trust the safe in your father's office."

Nathan frowned.

"The safe is a decoy."

Edwin breathed once.

"The real compartment is behind the portrait of your mother."

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Then Marcus's phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed almost immediately.

"Where?"

Nathan watched him.

"How bad?"

Marcus ended the call.

"Police found Edwin's car near the East River."

Grace tightened her grip on Nathan's hand.

"Was he inside?"

Marcus shook his head.

"No."

Nathan felt a flicker of hope.

May you like

Then Marcus finished.

"But there was blood all over the driver's seat."
