Chapter 14 - The Price of Choosing Lily

Every lawyer in the room told Nathan not to do it.

Evelyn was the loudest.

"If you renounce your rights under the legacy trust, even temporarily, the succession mechanism becomes unpredictable."

Nathan stood at the conference-room window.

"Can Victoria obtain control?"

"Possibly."

"For how long?"

"Weeks."

"What can she do in weeks?"

Evelyn stared at him.

"Sell assets."

"Anything else?"

"Replace officers."

"Anything else?"

"Trigger debt covenants."

"Anything else?"

"Destroy the company."

Nathan turned.

"Then she proves what this was always about."

The chief financial officer looked appalled.

"Thousands of employees depend on Cole Industries."

Nathan nodded.

"Which is why we prepare protections before I act."

He was not going to burn the company casually.

His father had confused an empire with the people inside it.

Nathan refused to make the same mistake.

He spent the next six hours moving employee retirement accounts beyond legacy trust control, securing payroll reserves, and asking lenders to freeze extraordinary transactions pending the fraud investigation.

He placed environmental and worker-safety obligations into independent oversight.

He gave minority directors emergency veto rights over mass layoffs.

Then he called a press conference.

Grace found him tying his necktie in a side office.

"You're really doing it."

"Yes."

"Because Daniel demanded it?"

Nathan looked at her in the mirror.

"Because I should have done it when I learned what the trust was."

Grace leaned against the doorway.

"You're giving up billions."

"Maybe."

"You say that like it's a parking space."

Nathan smiled faintly.

"I have enough money outside the trust to survive."

Grace folded her arms.

"That is a very millionaire sentence."

"I know."

The smile disappeared.

"But Lily doesn't need a company."

Grace looked at him.

"She needs a father who is still alive."

Nathan turned fully.

"Are you asking me not to do this?"

"I'm asking whether you understand what happens after."

"Victoria comes after us harder."

"Yes."

"She already sent someone with a rifle."

"We don't know it was her."

"No."

Nathan stepped closer.

"But I know what happens if I keep protecting the structure that gave her power."

Grace was quiet.

"My father spent nineteen years telling himself he was protecting thousands of employees when he was really protecting his control."

Nathan looked through the doorway at Lily coloring with Evelyn's assistant.

"I won't use the same excuse."

Grace's eyes softened.

"Then go."

Nathan walked to the press room.

Cameras filled the space.

He read no prepared statement.

"My name is Nathan Cole."

The room quieted.

"For generations, my family treated Cole Industries as if preserving our control mattered more than the people harmed along the way."

Reporters leaned forward.

"I have recently learned that documents tied to my inheritance were used to conceal the existence of my daughter and to threaten her mother."

A murmur moved through the room.

It was the first time Nathan had publicly called Lily his daughter.

"DNA confirmation is pending, but I have no intention of hiding behind procedure while a four-year-old child is attacked for threatening a financial arrangement she never asked to be part of."

He placed a signed document on the podium.

"Effective immediately, I renounce every personal benefit and voting right granted to me under the Cole-Kensington Legacy Trust."

The room exploded with questions.

Nathan raised one hand.

"I will retain only those corporate authorities independently vested in me as chief executive and shareholder."

He looked directly into the cameras.

"If protecting my daughter requires exposing crimes committed in my family's name, then that is what I will do."

The stock fell another nine percent before he left the room.

Victoria filed for emergency trust control forty minutes later.

Daniel called exactly one hour after the press conference.

"You did it."

Nathan sat beside Lily on the floor.

"Where do we meet?"

Daniel gave him an address.

An abandoned railway terminal in Yonkers.

Mills hated it.

Marcus hated it more.

Nathan went anyway with surveillance teams positioned outside.

Grace came despite his objections.

"My name is on the recording."

"That doesn't mean you need to be there."

"It means I decide."

Nathan gave up.

Daniel appeared alone beneath the old terminal clock.

He was taller than Nathan expected.

For a strange second, the resemblance to Richard was so strong that Nathan's body reacted before his mind did.

Daniel noticed.

"I get that a lot from people who knew him."

Nathan extended no hand.

Neither did Daniel.

Grace stood between their lines of sight.

"You have the recording?"

Daniel nodded.

He handed her a small encrypted drive.

"Three files."

"What's in them?"

"Victoria talking to Edwin."

"And?"

"Victor talking to Sloane."

Nathan stepped closer.

"And the third?"

Daniel's face tightened.

"Helen talking to me."

"About what?"

"Clean House."

They played the first file on a secured laptop.

Victoria's voice was clear.

"Grace has been inside Nathan's house for eleven weeks."

Edwin answered weakly.

"I know."

"Then why is she still there?"

"Because removing her creates risk."

"Her remaining creates more."

Nathan's hands curled into fists.

Victoria continued.

"The child cannot be present when the trust activates."

Edwin said, "You mean legally present?"

Victoria laughed.

"Do not make me say things you already understand."

Grace went pale.

The second recording contained Victor speaking with Sloane about destroying evidence from Caroline's crash.

The third was harder.

Helen's voice sounded exhausted.

"Daniel, I need you to stay away from Nathan."

"Why?"

"Because Victoria is going to force the issue before the wedding."

"What issue?"

"Grace and the child."

"What is she planning?"

Helen hesitated.

"She calls it Clean House."

"And what does that mean?"

"An accident."

Grace closed her eyes.

Nathan stopped the audio.

"Why didn't you give this to police?"

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"Because Helen is my mother."

Nathan stared at him.

"She knew they planned to kill Grace."

"She warned me."

"She did not warn Grace."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Do not judge her like you understand her life."

Nathan's anger flashed.

"My daughter was almost murdered."

"And my mother spent twenty years being blackmailed with a murder she did not commit."

"That does not excuse silence."

"No."

Daniel's voice cracked.

"It doesn't."

The brothers stared at each other.

Grace intervened.

"Where is Helen now?"

Daniel looked at her.

"I don't know."

"You helped her disappear?"

"Yes."

"Then you know something."

Daniel's face changed.

Before he could answer, the terminal lights went out.

Marcus shouted through Nathan's earpiece.

"Movement on the east platform."

A gunshot echoed.

Daniel shoved Grace behind a concrete column.

Nathan pulled her down.

Another shot struck the wall.

Security teams moved in.

Then a woman's voice came over the old terminal loudspeaker.

"Nathan."

Victoria.

Her voice echoed through the darkness.

"You gave away your inheritance for a child who may not even be yours."

Nathan scanned the shadows.

"Come out."

Victoria laughed.

"No."

"Coward."

"You always did become stupid when Grace was involved."

Grace stiffened beside him.

Victoria continued.

"Ask her what happened the night Lily was conceived."

Nathan looked at Grace.

Grace's face drained of color.

May you like

The loudspeaker clicked off.

Nathan saw the expression on Grace's face and knew Victoria had found another secret.
