CHAPTER 1: THE DEBT OF BLOOD
CHAPTER 1: THE DEBT OF BLOOD
Three days after the miracle in the hospital room, Vincent Corsetti could not stop thinking about Serena Hayes.
His son, Anthony, was recovering.
Strong.
Healthy.
Alive.
Yet every time Vincent looked at the child, he remembered the exhausted young janitor who had refused to give up when everyone else had.
So he began asking questions.
Quietly.
Carefully.
The answers unsettled him.
Serena Hayes.
Age twenty-seven.
No living relatives.
No savings.
No health insurance.
History of foster care.
And one detail that made Vincent's stomach tighten.
Father: Daniel Hayes.
Mother: Rebecca Hayes.
Brother: Samuel Hayes.
All deceased.
Vincent knew those names.
Years ago, before he became head of the Corsetti organization, a violent crew within the family had carried out an unauthorized operation.
A mistake.
A massacre.
An innocent family destroyed while gangsters searched for stolen records.
The Hayes family.
Vincent had been young then.
Powerless to stop it.
But he had known.
And he had done nothing.
For years he convinced himself that silence wasn't guilt.
Now he wasn't so sure.
That evening he went to the hospital basement.
Serena was pushing a cleaning cart down a hallway.
When she saw him, she froze.
"Mr. Corsetti."
Vincent looked at her.
For a moment neither spoke.
Finally he said quietly,
"I know who you are."
Serena's face hardened.
"And I know who you are."
The silence between them felt dangerous.
Then Vincent surprised her.
He lowered his head.
"I owe your family a debt I can never repay."
Serena stared at him.
"You think money fixes that?"
"No."
"Then why are you here?"
Vincent looked away.
"Because my son is alive because of you."
May you like
For the first time, Serena saw genuine regret in his eyes.
And somehow that frightened her more than his reputation ever had.
