Chapter 9 - Room 314

The rehabilitation clinic in the Bronx looked harmless from the street.

It was six stories of pale brick with flower boxes under the windows and a blue sign promising private recovery in a peaceful environment.

Hannah hated it immediately.

"You own this place?"

Dominic stood beside her in the rear seat of the SUV.

"A holding company does."

"Which means you."

"Technically."

"That word does a lot of work in your life."

Dominic ignored the remark.

Luca sat in front with a laptop open on his knees.

"Clinic has thirty-eight patients tonight, seventeen staff, and a private basement level that does not appear on the public floor plan."

Hannah looked at Dominic.

"Of course it has a secret basement."

"I didn't know about it."

"That sentence is becoming a problem."

His eyes flashed.

"I'm aware."

Luca turned the laptop around.

"The basement was added after the acquisition."

"Authorized by?"

"Matteo's office."

Dominic's jaw tightened.

"Any patient records?"

"Basement records are encrypted separately."

"Can you open them?"

"Eventually."

"I don't like eventually."

"Computers don't care what you like."

Hannah glanced at Luca.

"I see why he keeps you."

Luca almost smiled.

Dominic did not.

They entered through a service entrance with three men from Luca's trusted security group.

Dominic had refused to involve the clinic's administrators until they understood who could be compromised.

The basement elevator required a six-digit code.

Luca obtained it from a maintenance terminal.

The doors opened onto a white corridor lit too brightly for midnight.

There were no signs.

No nurses' station.

No windows.

Only numbered doors.

Hannah counted them.

"Three-oh-eight, three-ten, three-twelve."

She stopped.

"Three-fourteen."

The door was locked from the outside.

Dominic looked at Luca.

Luca used a keycard cloned from the system.

The lock clicked.

Dominic entered first.

The room looked like a private hospital suite emptied in a hurry.

There was a narrow bed.

A table.

A small bathroom.

A security camera in the ceiling.

The mattress was still indented.

Hannah touched the sheet.

"Someone was here recently."

Luca examined the wastebasket.

"Very recently."

He held up an adhesive medical patch still inside its wrapper.

Dominic opened the wardrobe.

Women's clothes hung inside.

Simple sweaters.

Soft pants.

A gray robe.

Hannah pulled one sweater from the hanger and stared at the size tag.

It was her size.

On the shelf beneath it sat a hairbrush filled with dark strands.

Dominic picked it up with a handkerchief.

His fingers trembled.

"Elena's hair was darker than yours."

Hannah looked around the room.

"If she was here, why didn't she leave something obvious?"

"Maybe she couldn't."

A soft tapping sound came from the bathroom.

Everyone turned.

Dominic drew his gun.

The tapping stopped.

He opened the bathroom door.

Empty.

The sound came again.

Hannah frowned.

"The wall."

Luca pressed his ear against the tile.

Three taps.

Pause.

Three taps.

Pause.

Dominic moved to the adjacent room.

The door read 316.

It was also locked from outside.

Inside sat an elderly woman in a hospital gown.

She stared at them with frightened eyes.

"Are you here for the dark-haired lady?"

Hannah stepped forward.

"What dark-haired lady?"

The woman pointed toward the wall.

"My neighbor."

"What was her name?"

"They called her Maria."

Dominic showed her Elena's photograph from his phone.

The woman gasped.

"That's her."

Hannah's knees weakened.

Dominic gripped the edge of the bed.

"When did you last see her?"

"This morning."

He swallowed.

"Was she here voluntarily?"

The woman laughed bitterly.

"None of us down here are voluntary."

Luca looked around.

"Why are you here?"

"My son said I was confused."

"Are you?"

"Sometimes."

She smiled sadly.

"Not enough to deserve a locked door."

Hannah crouched beside her.

"Did Maria ever talk about children?"

The woman's eyes softened.

"Three little girls."

Hannah closed her eyes.

Dominic looked away.

"She drew them all the time."

The woman opened the drawer beside her bed.

Inside was a folded sheet of paper.

"She pushed this under my door yesterday."

Hannah unfolded it.

Three small girls were drawn in crayon beneath a yellow sun.

Beside them stood a dark-haired woman.

On the other side stood a man in a black suit.

Between the adults, in block letters, Elena had written one word.

HOME.

Dominic touched the paper.

"Why would she draw me if she believed I was dangerous?"

The elderly woman shrugged.

"She talked about a man named Dominic."

"What did she say?"

"That she loved him."

Sofia's claim echoed in Hannah's mind.

Elena had told the nanny Dominic was dangerous.

The two stories did not fit.

"Did she say why she was here?"

"She said her uncle put her here."

Dominic's face hardened.

"Her uncle?"

"Maybe not her uncle."

The woman frowned.

"She called him Uncle Matteo because everyone did."

Hannah felt cold.

"Did Matteo visit?"

"Once a week."

"When was the last time?"

"Yesterday."

Luca stepped into the corridor and made a call.

Hannah remained with the woman.

"Did Elena ever mention a sister?"

The woman smiled.

"All the time."

Hannah's throat tightened.

"What did she say?"

"That she had one somewhere."

"Did she know my name?"

The woman looked carefully at Hannah's face.

"You're Hannah."

Hannah stopped breathing.

"How do you know that?"

"She drew you too."

She reached deeper into the drawer and removed another folded page.

This drawing showed two identical women standing on opposite sides of a river.

One wore a hospital bracelet.

The other held a coffee cup.

Above them Elena had written SISTERS.

Below the picture was a sentence.

HANNAH DOESN'T KNOW I EXIST YET.

Hannah's eyes filled.

"She knew about me."

"Yes."

"Did she ever say why she didn't contact me?"

The woman nodded.

"She said someone was watching you."

Hannah sat back.

"Matteo."

"Maybe."

Dominic's phone rang.

Luca had found a clinic administrator at her home and forced an emergency records release through corporate authority.

The patient registered in Room 314 had been admitted eighteen months ago under the name Maria Ellis.

Admission date was two days after Elena's supposed death.

The admitting physician was Dr. Samuel Kline.

Hannah stared at Dominic.

"The same doctor who signed the adoption papers."

Dominic nodded.

"He's alive."

"Luca said he retired."

"Retired from public practice."

Luca returned with his laptop.

"He has been consulting here under a private contract for four years."

Dominic's eyes turned lethal.

"Where is he?"

"Connecticut."

"Send people."

"Already did."

Hannah looked around Elena's empty room.

"If Matteo moved her this morning, he knew we were coming."

Luca nodded.

"Which means someone told him."

Dominic looked at the security camera.

"Or he never stopped watching this room."

The camera light blinked red.

Hannah stepped beneath it.

"Matteo, if you're watching, you lost."

Dominic looked at her.

"Did we?"

"We know she's alive."

"We don't know where."

"We will."

The camera light went dark.

Luca swore.

"Remote disconnect."

Hannah's phone vibrated.

Unknown number again.

A text appeared.

YOU SHOULD HAVE STAYED A WAITRESS.

Then another.

YOUR SISTER MADE THE SAME MISTAKE.

Dominic read over her shoulder.

His expression hardened.

A third message arrived.

ASK DOMINIC WHY SHE TRIED TO RUN THE NIGHT SHE DIED.

Hannah looked at him.

"Did she?"

Dominic said nothing.

That silence answered too much.

Room 314 contained one object that disturbed Hannah more than the locked door.

A calendar hung beside the bed with eighteen months crossed out in blue pen.

Every day had a small mark.

Some marks were simple lines.

Others contained single words.

LILY.

GRACE.

EMMA.

On birthdays and holidays, Elena had drawn three tiny hearts.

Hannah stood in front of the calendar long after the others had moved into the adjoining room.

"She counted every day."

Dominic returned and stood beside her.

"Yes."

One square from six months earlier contained the word HANNAH.

Hannah touched it.

"She knew my name while she was here."

"Your father's tape said she found you before the crash."

"Knowing that and seeing this aren't the same."

A later square contained a small X beside DOMINIC.

Dominic frowned.

"What does that mean?"

They searched the nearby drawers.

Under a stack of hospital socks, Hannah found a folded index card.

It contained Elena's private code for people who visited the clinic.

M meant Matteo.

K meant Kline.

A meant Adrian.

D did not mean Dominic.

Beside the code, Elena had written D = DECOY.

Hannah looked at him.

"She knew somebody was pretending to be you or using your identity."

Dominic's face hardened.

Another line read L = LOOKS LIKE LUCA.

Hannah called Luca into the room.

He stared at the note.

"Looks like me?"

"Not is Luca."

Hannah pointed at the wording.

"Elena was uncertain even then."

May you like

The discovery did not clear him completely.

But it planted the first concrete reason to question what Elena later believed she had seen through the clinic window.
