Chapter 18 - What Matteo Wanted From Hannah

Hannah stared at Peter's terrified face on the tablet.
"I don't have anything that belongs to Matteo."
Elena looked at the silver pendant around Hannah's neck.
"Maybe you do."
Hannah touched it.
"This?"
Celia's face changed.
"Open it."
"We've opened it."
"Not the picture compartment."
Hannah frowned.
"What other compartment?"
Celia held out her hand.
Hannah removed the pendant and passed it to her.
Celia pressed one thumbnail against the inner rim.
A second metal plate popped loose.
Behind it was a strip of yellowed paper no wider than a fingernail.
Hannah stared.
"What is that?"
Celia unfolded it carefully with tweezers from Reeves's evidence kit.
A series of numbers had been written in tiny blue ink.
Luca leaned closer.
"Account numbers."
Reeves looked at Celia.
"You knew this was there?"
"Catherine put it there."
Hannah felt as if the floor shifted again.
"My mother?"
Celia nodded.
"The night Helena was taken, Catherine realized the freight records were the reason."
"She had copied one page Thomas brought home."
"When Matteo demanded every copy, she hid the key account references inside the twins' pendants."
Elena touched the matching pendant at her throat.
"Mine too?"
"Probably."
Elena opened hers.
The hidden compartment held a second strip of paper.
Reeves placed them side by side.
Together, the numbers formed complete account identifiers and a short alphanumeric code.
Luca stared at the sequence.
"This could be a vault reference."
Dominic looked at Hannah.
"Matteo has wanted those pendants for twenty-six years."
"Then why not take Elena's when she was a baby?"
Celia answered.
"He didn't know Catherine had hidden anything inside them."
"When did he learn?"
"Thomas mentioned the pendants in a letter to me six years ago."
"A letter Matteo may have intercepted."
Hannah understood.
"That's why my apartment was searched."
"And why someone watched you."
Elena looked at Peter's image.
"Why take her manager?"
Luca checked the original Bellafonte security investigation.
"Peter was the one who hired Hannah."
Hannah frowned.
"So?"
"How did you get the job?"
"I applied online."
"Did you interview with Peter?"
"Yes."
"Anyone refer you?"
Hannah thought.
"The system said an employee referral moved me to priority review."
"Whose?"
"I assumed it was a mistake."
Luca pulled the restaurant's old hiring logs.
His expression changed.
"Referral was entered from an executive account."
Dominic looked over his shoulder.
"Whose?"
Luca turned the screen around.
MATTEO VALE.
Hannah stared.
"He got me hired at Bellafonte."
"Yes."
"But why put me near Dominic and the girls?"
Elena understood first.
"He wanted to see what would happen when the girls saw you."
Hannah felt cold.
"The table was moved to the main floor."
Dominic's face hardened.
"He staged the encounter."
"But why?"
Reeves answered.
"To create evidence that Dominic was unstable."
Everyone looked at him.
"Think about it."
"A mysterious waitress who looks exactly like his dead wife appears."
"His nonverbal daughters call her Mama."
"Dominic locks down a restaurant and takes her away."
Hannah stared at Dominic.
"He knew exactly how you would react."
Dominic looked deeply irritated by that fact.
Reeves continued.
"Matteo could frame the event as paranoia, abduction, emotional instability, or obsession."
"That strengthens a petition to remove Dominic as trustee."
Elena's face twisted.
"He used my children as actors in his evidence."
"Without knowing they'd actually speak."
Hannah said it slowly.
"That part surprised him too."
Luca nodded.
"And once Hannah was inside Dominic's orbit, Matteo could search for the pendant."
Hannah looked at the tiny paper strip.
"He engineered the worst day of my life because he wanted numbers hidden in jewelry."
Celia's voice was soft.
"Numbers that may lead to Victor's original offshore reserve."
Reeves looked at her.
"How much?"
"Victor once said there was enough to rebuild everything if the companies collapsed."
Dominic's face turned disgusted.
"Blood money."
"Probably hundreds of millions now."
Hannah looked at the tablet image of Peter.
"And Matteo thinks I'll bring him the code to save Peter."
Dominic shook his head.
"You're not going."
Hannah looked at him.
"That worked well last time."
"This time federal agents are already moving."
Reeves nodded.
"We do not need you at the terminal."
"Then why did Matteo specifically demand me?"
"Because he thinks you have the pendant."
"He may kill Peter if I don't appear."
Reeves held her gaze.
"Our job is to recover the hostage without giving Matteo another one."
Hannah wanted to argue.
Then she looked at Elena.
Her sister's face was pleading silently.
"Fine."
Dominic raised an eyebrow.
"That easy?"
"Don't make me regret maturity."
The federal team entered the ferry maintenance terminal at 6:18 p.m.
Hannah remained in a command vehicle two blocks away with Elena and Celia.
Dominic was supposed to remain there too.
He lasted forty seconds after the first gunshot over the radio.
"Dominic."
Elena grabbed his sleeve.
"Reeves said stay."
"Reeves says many things."
"You're impossible."
He kissed her forehead.
"I know."
Then he was gone.
Hannah looked at Elena.
"You married that voluntarily?"
"I was young."
"You were thirty."
"Emotionally young."
Despite herself, Hannah laughed.
The radio crackled.
Agents had located Peter alive in a lower storage room.
Samuel Kline was barricaded inside with him.
Matteo was moving through underground service tunnels.
Dominic and Luca joined the federal team at the west entrance.
Hannah listened to fragments.
"Suspect moving east."
"Second level clear."
"Hostage visible."
Then Peter's voice came faintly through an open tactical channel.
"Please don't shoot."
Kline shouted something indistinct.
A gunshot cracked.
Elena grabbed Hannah's hand.
The radio went chaotic.
Then Reeves's voice returned.
"Kline down, nonfatal."
"Hostage secure."
Hannah exhaled.
"Peter is alive."
Elena squeezed her hand.
Another voice came over the channel.
"Matteo entering tunnel seven."
Luca answered.
"I know where that comes out."
Celia looked up sharply.
"No."
Hannah turned.
"What?"
"Tunnel seven goes under the old ferry ramp."
"Where does it end?"
"The river access."
"He'll have a boat."
Celia nodded.
Elena grabbed the radio.
"Dominic, river access."
Static answered.
Then his voice came through.
"I heard."
Matteo emerged beneath the ferry ramp as dusk fell over the water.
A speedboat waited against the pilings.
He had almost reached it when Dominic stepped from behind a concrete column.
Hannah could not see the confrontation from the command vehicle, but Luca's body camera transmitted a shaky image to the monitor.
Matteo stopped.
"Nephew."
Dominic held a weapon at his side.
"Uncle."
"You always were dramatic."
"You kidnapped my wife."
Matteo shrugged.
"I saved this family from a weak woman who wanted to hand everything to the government."
Elena went rigid beside Hannah.
Dominic's voice remained calm.
"You stole her from her parents when she was two days old."
"I protected an enterprise."
"You kept her in a locked room for eighteen months."
"I protected an enterprise."
"You took my daughter."
Matteo smiled.
"And you finally learned the lesson your father understood."
"What's that?"
"Everyone has something they love more than the truth."
Dominic looked at him.
"No."
Matteo's smile faded.
"No?"
"You misunderstood the lesson."
Dominic raised his empty left hand.
Federal agents appeared along the upper ramp.
"I love them enough to tell the truth."
Matteo looked around.
"You turned over the books."
"All of them."
"Idiot."
"Maybe."
"You'll lose everything."
Dominic's expression did not change.
"Not everything."
Matteo reached inside his coat.
Luca shouted.
Agents raised weapons.
Dominic moved first.
He tackled Matteo before the older man could draw.
They struck the concrete hard.
The gun skidded toward the river.
Matteo hit Dominic across the face.
Dominic drove him back against a piling.
For several seconds it stopped looking like an arrest and became something older and uglier.
Matteo laughed with blood on his teeth.
"Do it."
Dominic's hand closed around his throat.
"Kill me like your father would."
Elena whispered at the monitor.
"Dominic, don't."
As if he heard her through distance, Dominic stopped.
Matteo smiled.
"Weak."
Dominic released him and stepped back.
"No."
Federal agents rushed in.
"Different."
Matteo was handcuffed on the concrete where he had intended to escape.
Hannah watched the monitor and realized the man who had ruled their lives through fear had finally lost because Dominic refused to use the weapon Matteo understood best.
An hour later, agents searched the speedboat.
Inside a waterproof case, they found Victor Vale's missing reserve records.
The account code matched the two paper strips hidden in Hannah's and Elena's pendants.
Reeves looked at the numbers.
"This is enough money to keep financial investigators busy for years."
Hannah stared at the tiny pendant in her palm.
"My mother hid the map to an empire inside jewelry for two newborn babies."
Elena touched her matching pendant.
"And Matteo spent twenty-six years trying to get it back."
Celia looked at the sisters.
"Catherine won."
Hannah thought about her mother fighting in a hospital corridor to keep Matteo from taking both daughters.
"Not completely."
She took Elena's hand.
"But enough."
Peter's rescue left him shaking so badly that he could not hold the cup of water an agent gave him.
Hannah met him after the terminal was secured.
He stared at her with red eyes.
"I am so sorry."
"For being kidnapped?"
"For hiring you."
Hannah blinked.
"That's a strange apology."
"Matteo's referral moved your application to the top."
"You didn't know why."
"I should have asked."
"Peter, restaurant managers do not normally investigate whether a board member is using hiring software to set up a family conspiracy."
He laughed once and then covered his face.
"I told forty-two customers there was a gas leak."
"That part was bad."
"Thank you."
Hannah sat beside him.
"Did Matteo ever ask about me after I started?"
Peter lowered his hands.
"Once."
"What did he ask?"
"Whether you wore jewelry."
Hannah touched the pendant.
"Anything else?"
"Whether you ever talked about your father."
Her stomach tightened.
"What did you say?"
"That you kept personal conversations personal and worked harder than anyone I had hired in years."
Hannah smiled faintly.
"Good answer."
Peter looked at her.
"I may have accidentally protected you by being nosy in the wrong direction."
"Take the win."
He nodded.
For Hannah, the conversation closed one more loop.
Bellafonte had not been random.
Her job had been part of Matteo's design.
But the people inside the design had still made choices of their own.
Peter had unknowingly refused to give Matteo the details he wanted.
Sometimes small ordinary decisions mattered more than grand plans.
The account hidden behind the initials A.R. created one more immediate problem before investigators could freeze it.
A transfer request for forty million dollars had been scheduled to execute at midnight.
Reeves brought the information to the command vehicle while Matteo was being processed.
"If the transfer clears, the money moves through six jurisdictions before morning."
Dominic looked at the account screen.
"Can you stop it?"
"With the code from both pendants and Elena's trust authorization, yes."
Elena frowned.
"Why my authorization?"
"Because one of the reserve accounts was quietly linked to the Rossi trust years ago."
Hannah stared.
"So Matteo tied stolen money to Elena's inheritance."
"Probably to make her look complicit if anyone found it."
Elena's face hardened.
"He built an escape route and a frame in the same account."
Reeves nodded.
Dominic looked at the sisters.
"Do it."
Hannah raised an eyebrow.
"You don't get to authorize her trust."
Dominic stopped.
The correction was small, but everyone felt it.
Six months earlier, or even one week earlier, he might have answered from habit.
Instead, he looked at Elena.
"Your decision."
Elena studied the screen.
"Freeze it."
Reeves entered the first code.
Hannah read the numbers from her pendant.
Elena read hers.
The transfer request changed from PENDING to BLOCKED.
Then another line appeared.
AUTHORIZED BENEFICIARY OVERRIDE REQUIRED.
Elena entered her legal identification number.
The account locked.
Reeves exhaled.
"Forty million stays put."
Hannah stared at the tiny paper that had survived inside her pendant through childhood, summer camps, cheap apartments, and years of never knowing why her father had been so upset when she once thought she had lost it.
"Dad knew this mattered."
"He knew enough to be afraid of losing it."
Elena touched Hannah's shoulder.
"He also gave you a replacement when you thought you lost yours at sixteen."
Hannah blinked.
"How do you know?"
"Celia told me."
"Then the pendant I wore after sixteen wasn't the original."
"No."
Hannah frowned.
"So how did the original end up with me now?"
Celia answered from behind them.
"Thomas switched them back after your father became ill."
Hannah stared.
"When?"
"The last Christmas before he died."
A memory surfaced of Thomas fastening the pendant around her neck after repairing what he claimed was a broken clasp.
Hannah had forgotten the moment completely.
Now it returned with painful clarity.
Thomas had known he was running out of time.
He had put the truth back around his daughter's neck without explaining it.
Hannah laughed softly through tears.
"Even at the end, he couldn't just say it."
Elena squeezed her hand.
"No."
"But he tried."
"Yes."
May you like
That distinction did not erase his silence.
It simply made the silence human instead of empty.
