Chapter 3: The Promise That Changed Everything

Three months later, life looked very different.

Vivian was awaiting trial.

The fraud scandal had shocked the city.

But for Sophie, none of that mattered.

What mattered was family.

One sunny afternoon, Sophie sat in the garden drawing pictures.

Julian watched from the porch.

Anna sat nearby helping her with crayons.

The scene felt strangely familiar.

Peaceful.

Like something he had lost long ago.

Finally Julian walked over.

"Anna."

She looked up.

"I owe you more than an apology."

Anna smiled gently.

"You don't owe me anything."

"Yes, I do."

Julian took a deep breath.

"My wife trusted you with her final wishes."

He glanced toward Sophie.

"And you've loved my daughter when I was too busy to see how much she needed someone."

Anna's eyes filled with emotion.

Before she could answer, Sophie suddenly jumped up.

"Can Anna stay forever?"

Both adults laughed softly.

Julian knelt beside his daughter.

"If Anna wants to."

Sophie immediately wrapped her arms around Anna.

The young woman held her tightly.

For the first time since losing her mother, Sophie felt safe.

Months later, Anna accepted a permanent position managing the West Family Foundation—a charity created in memory of Julian's wife.

Together they helped children who had lost parents.

Together they honored the woman who had brought them together.

And every year on the anniversary of her mother's birthday, Sophie placed flowers beneath her portrait and whispered:

"Don't worry, Mommy."

She smiled at Julian.

Then at Anna.

"We're okay now."

And for the first time in many years...

May you like

They truly were.
