Chapter 18 - The Last Debt

Vittorio took us to the river docks.

Of course he did.

Men like him loved places built for moving things without questions.

Containers rose around us in dark metal rows.

Cranes stretched over the river like skeletons.

The SUV stopped beside an old freight warehouse with half its windows boarded.

Salvatore pulled Leo out first.

I followed.

Vittorio kept one hand on my arm.

His grip was not painful.

That made it worse.

He still believed civility changed what he was doing.

"Where is the ring?"

"Safe."

"With Grace?"

I smiled.

"Maybe."

"Rosa Delgado?"

My heart jumped.

He noticed.

"You are not the only one capable of learning names."

"You learned hers five minutes too late."

His grip tightened.

"Grace never reached federal custody with the ring."

I stared at him.

He smiled.

"Interesting."

I forced my face blank.

"You are lying."

"Perhaps."

He dragged me into the warehouse.

Leo walked beside Salvatore.

The boy was pale but no longer crying.

He watched everything.

Doors.

Windows.

Men.

His father had taught him more than dinosaurs.

I hated that he needed any of it.

Inside, a folding table stood beneath one hanging light.

A laptop waited there.

Pike entered from a side door.

I laughed in disbelief.

"How did you beat us here?"

"Police routes."

"Criminal efficiency."

"Still talking."

"Still corrupt."

He slapped me.

My head snapped sideways.

Leo shouted.

Salvatore grabbed him tighter.

Vittorio looked annoyed.

"Pike."

"She needed -"

"Do not damage what I need."

I tasted blood.

"How touching."

Vittorio turned the laptop toward me.

A live video feed showed Grace in a secure conference room.

Rosa sat beside her.

The ring was on the table between them.

Relief almost weakened my knees.

Vittorio saw it.

"There."

He smiled.

"Now we know."

I stared at the screen.

"You hacked the room?"

"No."

Pike held up a phone.

"Police camera access."

I looked closer.

The angle was wrong for a security camera.

It came from a body camera.

A uniformed officer stood inside Grace's room.

Another corrupt piece.

"How many cops do you own?"

Vittorio shrugged.

"Fewer after tonight."

"Good."

"Not for them."

He typed a number into his phone.

On the video, the uniformed officer received a message.

His hand moved toward the ring.

Then the feed froze.

Vittorio frowned.

Static replaced the image.

A new face appeared.

Mateo.

He looked directly into the camera.

"You really should stop using people who can be bought."

Vittorio went white.

Mateo held up the ring.

"Some of us are expensive in the wrong direction."

The feed ended.

I laughed.

I could not help it.

Vittorio struck the laptop closed.

"Bring the boy."

Salvatore pulled Leo forward.

I stopped laughing.

"Do not."

Vittorio looked at me.

"You will call Grace."

"No."

"You will tell her to bring the ring."

"No."

He drew a pistol.

Leo stared at it.

Vittorio aimed at the floor beside the boy's shoe and fired.

The shot exploded through the warehouse.

Leo screamed.

I lunged.

Pike caught me.

"Stop."

Vittorio's face remained calm.

"The next one is not the floor."

I shook with rage.

"You need him alive."

"I need Nico to believe I need him alive."

The difference terrified me.

"Call."

I took the phone.

Grace answered on the second ring.

"Emma?"

"I'm at the docks."

Her voice changed.

"Which docks?"

Pike pressed the gun against my ribs.

"No details," he whispered.

"Vittorio wants the ring."

"We have it."

"I know."

I looked at Leo.

"He has Leo."

Silence.

Then Grace said, "Tell him we will trade."

Vittorio smiled.

I closed my eyes.

"Bring Nico."

Vittorio's smile vanished.

Pike shoved the gun harder against me.

"That was not the instruction."

"Bring Nico," I repeated.

"Emma -"

"He needs to see this end."

Grace understood something in my tone.

"All right."

The call ended.

Vittorio grabbed my throat.

"Do not improvise with me."

I looked into his eyes.

"Everyone who ever beat you did."

His face twisted.

He released me.

We waited twenty-three minutes.

I counted because counting gave fear edges.

Leo sat on a crate beside me.

Salvatore stood five feet away.

Pike paced near the loading door.

Vittorio made calls to men who did not answer.

His empire was collapsing in real time.

Each unanswered ring made him older.

"Papa is coming," Leo whispered.

"Yes."

"You promised?"

"He did."

"Then he comes."

The faith in his voice hurt.

Headlights appeared outside.

One black sedan entered the warehouse alone.

Nico stepped out.

No visible weapon.

No jacket.

His white shirt was stained with blood near the shoulder from the fight at Lumina.

Vittorio smiled.

"Finally."

Nico looked only at Leo.

"Are you hurt?"

Leo shook his head.

"Emma got hit."

Nico's eyes moved to my face.

The bruise from Pike's hand was already darkening.

Something terrible entered his expression.

Pike took one step backward.

"Later," I said.

Nico looked at me.

I meant it as a joke.

Neither of us laughed.

Vittorio raised his gun.

"The ring."

Nico held up the velvet pouch.

My pulse jumped.

"You have it?"

"Mateo gave it to me."

Vittorio's eyes widened.

"Where is Mateo?"

"Alive."

"A temporary condition."

"Not yours to decide anymore."

Nico placed the pouch on the concrete.

"Leo first."

"Emma too?"

Vittorio smiled.

"You are becoming greedy."

"They both walk."

"You are in no position to negotiate."

Nico's eyes went cold.

"Then why am I holding the only thing you want?"

Vittorio looked at Salvatore.

Salvatore pulled Leo to his feet.

"Halfway."

Nico kicked the pouch forward.

It stopped in the center of the warehouse.

Salvatore pushed Leo toward Nico.

The boy took three steps.

Then Pike grabbed him.

"No."

The detective's arm locked around Leo's neck.

Vittorio turned in shock.

"What are you doing?"

Pike's face had become wild.

"I am not going to prison for you."

There it was.

The first fracture in the loyal corruption Vittorio thought he owned.

"Give me the ring and a car."

Vittorio stared at him.

"You idiot."

"I have copies of everything."

Pike dragged Leo backward.

"Payments, calls, all of it."

Salvatore raised his gun toward Pike.

Pike aimed at Leo.

Every person froze.

Nico's voice became unbelievably calm.

"Aaron."

Pike looked at him.

"Let my son go."

"Back up."

"You know this ends one way."

"I know I have leverage."

"No."

Nico took one slow step.

"You have a frightened child."

"Same thing."

"That is why you will lose."

A metallic crash sounded above us.

Pike looked up.

That was enough.

Leo bit his hand.

Hard.

Pike screamed.

Leo dropped to the floor.

Nico ran.

Pike fired.

Nico twisted.

The bullet struck his side.

He fell.

Everything exploded.

I screamed his name.

Marco dropped from the catwalk onto Salvatore.

Mateo appeared behind a container row with federal agents.

Grace had never intended Nico to come alone.

Apparently nobody in this family could follow that instruction.

Gunfire cracked against steel.

Federal agents shouted commands.

Pike tried to run.

David stepped from behind the sedan and slammed the warehouse door into him.

I stared.

"What are you doing here?"

David held his injured shoulder.

"Making one good decision before I die."

"Do not be dramatic."

"You used to like dramatic."

"I was younger."

Pike tackled him.

Mateo reached them and dragged Pike away.

Salvatore and Marco crashed through a stack of empty pallets.

Bianca ran in behind Agent Reyes.

She reached Leo.

I reached Nico.

Blood spread beneath his hand.

"Look at me."

His eyes opened.

"You sound like me."

"Shut up."

"Also like me."

I pressed both hands over the wound.

"Stay with me."

"I intend to."

Vittorio snatched the velvet pouch from the floor.

He ran toward the river doors.

"He has the ring," I shouted.

Nico tried to rise.

"No."

I pushed him down.

"You are done flying."

"That is not how that phrase works."

"Tonight it is."

I ran after Vittorio.

Agent Reyes shouted for me to stop.

I did not.

The river doors opened onto a wet loading platform.

Vittorio reached the edge and tore open the pouch.

He pulled out the ring.

Then he laughed.

"Finally."

"It is already copied."

He turned.

"Copies can disappear."

"Not enough copies."

His eyes narrowed.

"You think evidence ends men like me?"

"No."

I looked back at the warehouse filling with federal agents.

"Witnesses do."

His face changed.

"UV ink."

"Grace found it."

"Names mean nothing."

"They mean something when people are still alive."

I smiled.

"My grandmother made sure of that."

Vittorio raised his gun.

"Your grandmother should have died sooner."

A voice came from behind me.

"Drop it."

Mateo.

Vittorio fired.

I ducked.

Mateo fired back.

Vittorio stumbled.

His heel slipped on the rain-slick edge.

He fell backward into the river.

For one terrible second, nobody moved.

Then Mateo ran to the edge.

He threw a rescue line.

I stared at him.

"You saved him?"

Mateo looked at me.

"Death would be faster than court."

Federal agents hauled Vittorio from the freezing water.

He came up coughing, furious, and alive.

Handcuffs closed around his wrists.

Inside the warehouse, Salvatore was pinned beneath Marco and two agents.

Pike lay facedown with Mateo's spare cuff around one wrist and David's belt around the other because apparently improvisation had reached everyone.

Bianca held Leo.

Nico was still conscious when paramedics cut his shirt.

I knelt beside him again.

He looked at my face.

"Leo?"

"Safe."

"Bianca?"

"Safe."

"Marco?"

"Annoying."

From across the warehouse Marco shouted, "I heard that."

Nico almost laughed and immediately winced.

"You?"

He asked it last.

I understood why.

"I'm here."

His hand found mine.

"Good."

Paramedics lifted him onto a stretcher.

Leo ran over before they moved him.

"Papa."

Nico reached for him.

"I promised."

Leo's face crumpled.

"You came."

"Always."

The paramedics rolled him toward the ambulance.

I stood under the warehouse lights watching federal agents photograph a criminal empire as it collapsed into evidence bags.

David sat against a wall while an agent read him his rights.

He looked at me.

"Emma."

I stopped.

"I am sorry."

I had waited years to hear that without excuses.

Now it sounded smaller than I expected.

"I know."

He swallowed.

"Is that it?"

"For tonight."

I looked toward the ambulance carrying Nico.

"Some debts do not disappear because you finally name them."

David lowered his head.

Outside, dawn was beginning to lighten the river.

May you like

For the first time since a tray of crystal started falling, nobody was chasing us.
