Chapter 17 - The People Nobody Saw

Vittorio rose so quickly his chair fell backward.

"Lock the building."

Salvatore lifted his radio.

"All exits."

I almost smiled.

That was exactly what I wanted him to do.

The front doors were not where the ring was going.

Neither were the elevators.

Rosa Delgado had worked in Lumina's dish room for nineteen years.

She was fifty-eight, five feet tall, and so thoroughly ignored by wealthy guests that she could walk through a private conversation carrying dirty plates without anyone lowering their voice.

She had trained me on my first night.

She had loaned me twenty dollars when my bank account went negative.

And three minutes before Salvatore dragged me upstairs, I had slipped the ring into the pocket of her white apron beside the industrial dishwasher.

I had told her only one thing.

"Take this to Grace Holloway and do not use the front door."

Rosa had looked at the sapphire once.

Then at my face.

"Trouble?"

"A lot."

"Good."

She tucked it away.

"My bus is late anyway."

Vittorio did not know Rosa existed.

That was his weakness.

He had built his life around people he believed mattered.

Men with titles.

Men with guns.

Men with offices, badges, and family names carved onto buildings.

He had never learned the names of the people who washed his wineglasses.

"Search every employee," he ordered.

I leaned back in my chair.

"Too late."

His eyes came to me.

"You think this is clever?"

"I think you spent thirty years teaching people like me how to become invisible."

Nico looked at me.

Something almost proud moved across his face.

Vittorio pointed at Salvatore.

"Find it."

Salvatore turned toward the door.

Marco moved first.

He kicked the fallen chair into Salvatore's knees.

The gun fired into the ceiling.

Nico grabbed Pike's wrist.

The dining room exploded.

Clara threw herself across the table toward Leo.

Bianca pulled the boy beneath her chair.

David slammed his good shoulder into Pike from the side.

I dropped to the floor.

A crystal goblet shattered where my head had been.

For one insane second, I was back at the VIP booth watching glass fall.

Then Nico shouted my name.

"Emma."

"I'm down."

Salvatore recovered and fired toward Marco.

Marco rolled behind the sideboard.

Nico twisted Pike's arm until the detective lost his weapon.

David kicked it under the table.

Pike punched him directly in the wounded shoulder.

David screamed and collapsed.

I crawled toward the gun.

A polished black shoe stepped on my hand.

Vittorio.

He looked down at me.

"Your grandmother crawled too."

Rage turned the pain into something distant.

I grabbed the stem of a broken wineglass and drove it into the leather of his shoe beside his foot.

He jerked back.

I rolled free.

"She lived long enough to ruin you."

His face twisted.

"Not yet."

The fire alarm began screaming.

Red strobes flashed across the dining room.

Vittorio looked toward the ceiling.

I did too.

That was not part of our plan.

Then Clara laughed from beneath the table.

"I may have pulled something on the way up."

Sprinklers erupted.

Cold water poured across white linen and expensive suits.

Smoke doors slammed shut in the corridor.

The ballroom beyond erupted into panic.

Hundreds of donors, reporters, politicians, and invited guests surged toward emergency exits.

Vittorio's private security lost the one thing it needed most.

Control.

"Move," Bianca shouted.

She pulled Leo toward the service door.

Clara followed.

Salvatore saw them.

He raised his gun.

Nico crossed the room like a collision.

He struck Salvatore before the weapon aligned.

Both men crashed into the wet table.

I ran toward Bianca.

Pike grabbed my apron from behind.

The fabric tore.

I spun.

He smiled through blood from his mouth.

"You should have stayed poor."

I hit him with the silver bread basket.

It was not graceful.

It was extremely satisfying.

Pike stumbled.

David hooked one leg around the detective's ankle from the floor.

Pike went down hard.

I stared at David.

"Thanks."

He grimaced.

"Do not make it emotional."

"Wouldn't dream of it."

Marco appeared beside us.

"Kitchen."

We moved.

The service corridor filled with frightened employees.

Nobody knew which men were security and which were attackers.

That confusion helped us.

I knew every turn.

Past pastry prep.

Left at dry storage.

Down the half stair.

Through the dish room.

Rosa's station was empty.

Good.

The rear freight elevator opened.

Bianca, Clara, and Leo were waiting.

Nico arrived seconds later with blood at his temple.

"Salvatore?"

Marco asked.

"Gone."

"Vittorio?"

"Gone."

My stomach tightened.

"Not gone."

I looked toward the loading dock.

"He knows these service routes too."

We reached the rear exit.

Three black SUVs blocked the alley.

Vittorio stood beside the middle one.

Salvatore stood with him.

Ten armed men surrounded the vehicles.

We stopped.

Vittorio smiled.

"I helped choose this restaurant before you were born, Emma."

"Congratulations."

"You are not the only person who knows the kitchen."

Nico moved in front of Leo.

Vittorio raised one hand.

"No shooting."

His men lowered their weapons slightly.

"I only want the ring."

"It is gone," I said.

"Then tell me where."

"No."

Vittorio looked at Leo.

Nico stepped another inch.

"Do not look at my son."

Vittorio's face went flat.

"He is the reason any of this matters."

Bianca stared at him.

"You tried to kill a child because of inheritance."

"Do not reduce strategy to money."

Marco laughed.

"You always hated when people called greed greed."

Vittorio ignored him.

"Nico's father changed the succession structure before he died."

Nico went still.

"What?"

"Carlo made the controlling family trust pass through direct descendants."

His eyes moved to Leo.

"As long as Nico had an heir, I could never consolidate the holdings without challenge."

Bianca's face turned sick.

"That is why you threatened him when he was two."

"I needed you gone."

"Why not kill me?"

"Because your disappearance was more useful."

Vittorio smiled at Nico.

"A grieving husband makes mistakes."

Marco's hands curled.

"And a grieving brother?"

"Also useful."

Nico's voice came out low.

"You built a war out of funerals."

"I built order."

"You built fear."

"Same thing, when managed properly."

Leo stepped out from behind Bianca.

"No."

Everyone looked at him.

The boy's hands shook, but he lifted his chin.

"Papa makes me scared sometimes."

Nico flinched.

Leo continued.

"But he never makes me afraid of him."

Vittorio stared.

"You do."

Something ugly passed through Vittorio's expression.

"Children say foolish things."

"So do old men," Leo said.

Marco made a strangled sound.

Even Bianca almost smiled.

Vittorio did not.

"Enough."

He signaled.

Two men moved toward us.

Then every light in the loading dock went out.

I heard Clara whisper, "Again?"

A voice came through the darkness.

"Nobody move."

Mateo.

Nico froze.

"Mateo?"

A gunshot cracked from the far end of the alley.

One of Vittorio's men dropped his weapon and grabbed his arm.

Security floodlights snapped back on.

Mateo stood above us on the loading ramp.

His left arm was bandaged.

His face was bruised.

Beside him stood three men wearing federal tactical gear.

Vittorio's face changed.

"You."

Mateo looked at him.

"Miss me?"

Nico stared.

"Where have you been?"

"Busy proving I am a disappointing traitor."

Behind Mateo, Grace Holloway appeared with a woman in a federal windbreaker.

"Special Agent Elena Reyes," Grace called.

"Federal warrants are being executed on the property and individuals named in Eleanor Hayes's records."

For one beautiful second, Vittorio looked old.

Then Salvatore grabbed Leo.

It happened so fast none of us reached him.

His arm locked around the boy's chest.

A pistol pressed beneath Leo's jaw.

Bianca screamed.

Nico stopped breathing.

Vittorio recovered instantly.

"Vehicles."

Salvatore dragged Leo toward the SUV.

Nico raised his hands.

"Take me."

Vittorio smiled.

"I already had you for years."

"Take me instead."

"No."

Leo struggled.

"Papa."

"Do not move, Leo."

Nico's voice was steady even while his face died.

"Look at me."

Leo did.

"I am coming."

Salvatore pulled him into the SUV.

Vittorio opened the rear door.

Then he looked at me.

"Emma."

My stomach dropped.

"You know where the ring is."

Nico shouted, "No."

Vittorio pointed a gun toward Leo through the open vehicle door.

"Get in."

I looked at Nico.

He shook his head.

"Emma, no."

I thought of three steps across Lumina.

Three steps between being invisible and becoming unforgettable.

Sometimes the choice came before fear could vote.

I walked to Vittorio's SUV.

"Tell Rosa I want my twenty dollars back," I said to Nico.

His face broke.

"Emma."

I got inside.

Salvatore held Leo on the opposite seat.

Vittorio climbed in beside me.

The doors slammed.

As the SUV tore out of the alley, Leo reached one shaking hand toward mine.

I took it.

"You flew again," he whispered.

"Not yet."

I watched Nico disappear behind us.

May you like

"This time we land first."
