Chapter 1: The Child Who Never Died

Arthur collapsed onto one knee before anyone could reach him.
Blood spread across the floor beneath him.
Damian caught him just before he fell.
"What do you mean?" Damian demanded.
Arthur struggled to breathe.
"Marcus... created the fake paternity report years ago."
"Not to destroy your family."
"To erase Oliver... from the world's records."
Oliver looked between the adults, unable to understand.
"I don't want to disappear," he whispered.
Arthur forced a faint smile.
"You won't."
He looked directly at the boy.
"You were never the child Marcus was hiding."
Silence swept through the room.
Arthur slowly pointed toward the silver flash drive in Eliza's trembling hand.
"The hospital surveillance files..."
"The maternity ward."
"The fire."
"They prove there were two newborn boys that night."
Eliza's eyes widened.
"No..."
Arthur nodded weakly.
"Oliver wasn't stolen."
"He was switched."
Damian's heartbeat seemed to stop.
Arthur closed his eyes.
"The child Marcus wanted everyone to forget..."
"...was his own son."
Before anyone could ask another question, every monitor suddenly came back to life.
Marcus Vale appeared on the largest screen for the first time.
Older.
Weary.
His expression carried no triumph.
Only regret.
"I suppose," he said quietly, "it's finally time you knew why I committed the greatest crime of my life."
