Chapter 2 – The Sister He Couldn't Save
Chapter 2 – The Sister He Couldn't Save
The silence in the hallway felt heavier than the alarms that had filled it moments before.
No one moved.
The doctors stared at the blue oxygen cable.
One of the senior nurses slowly knelt beside the hospital bed, her hands shaking as she examined the connector.
"It... was disconnected."
The room fell silent again.
She looked up at the chief physician.
"This oxygen line wasn't locked properly."
The doctor checked it himself.
She was right.
One loose connection had nearly taken the little girl's life.
Everyone slowly turned toward the filthy barefoot boy.
He lowered his head.
Ashamed.
Scared.
The girl's father swallowed hard.
Only minutes earlier he had thrown the child across the floor.
Now his own legs felt weak.
The chief physician crouched beside the boy.
"How did you know?"
The boy wiped his face with a dirty sleeve.
"My sister..."
His voice cracked.
"We lived under the bridge."
"She got sick."
"They took her to another hospital."
His breathing became uneven.
"I watched the doctors run."
"I watched the machines beep."
"I saw one nurse crying because they couldn't understand why my sister couldn't breathe."
The hallway remained completely still.
"I saw the blue tube hanging loose."
"I tried to tell them."
"No one listened."
He closed his eyes.
"They thought I was just a dirty kid."
A tear rolled down his cheek.
"My sister died before anyone checked."
The doctor slowly removed his glasses.
Every nurse standing nearby lowered her head.
No one could find a single word to say.
The girl's father felt his chest tighten.
May you like
His daughter was alive...
Only because another child had refused to let history repeat itself.
