Chapter 1: The Bride Who Owned the Ballroom
The silence lasted so long that even the string quartet stopped playing.
Every guest stared at the leather portfolio in the venue manager's hands.
Patricia's fingers slowly loosened around the torn piece of ivory lace.
"What... what is this?" she whispered.
The manager carefully opened the portfolio and displayed the official deed for everyone standing nearby.
"Effective three months ago," he announced calmly, "the ownership of the Whitmore Grand Estate was legally transferred to Miss Clara Mason."
A collective gasp swept across the ballroom.
Andrew blinked in disbelief.
"That's impossible."
"It isn't," Clara replied quietly.
"I purchased this estate ninety-three days ago."
Patricia laughed nervously.
"You're lying."
Clara simply looked toward the manager.
"Would you explain?"
The manager nodded.
"The purchase was completed through Mason Heritage Holdings."
Andrew frowned.
"I've never even heard of that company."
"No," Clara answered.
"You've only heard of the charities it quietly funds."
She slowly turned toward the hundreds of guests.
"My family has never believed in displaying wealth."
"We believe in protecting it."
Patricia's confident smile disappeared completely.
