Spring sunlight poured through the courtroom windows.

Judge Harrison adjusted his glasses before reading the final ruling.

"Based on overwhelming video evidence, witness testimony, and forensic analysis..."

"The defendant, Preston Bennett, is found guilty on all counts."

The sentence echoed through the silent courtroom.

Prison time.

Heavy financial restitution.

Mandatory payment for Sophie's medical treatment.

His business partners had already abandoned him.

His reputation was destroyed.

No appeal could erase what the world had seen.

Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded me.

"Mrs. Bennett, do you have anything to say to your brother?"

I looked toward Sophie.

The scar hidden beneath her blonde hair had almost disappeared.

She smiled while holding my hand.

Then I faced the cameras.

"I spent my life believing family meant sharing blood."

"I was wrong."

"Family is the people who protect your children."

"Not the people who hurt them."

Months later, Sophie and I moved into a quiet little house overlooking a lake.

She laughed again.

She painted again.

She slept without nightmares.

One afternoon she looked up from her coloring book.

"Mom?"

"Are we still a family... even without Grandma and Grandpa?"

I smiled and kissed her forehead.

"We're finally the family we were always supposed to be."

Outside, the afternoon sun shimmered across the water.

Inside, there was no fear.
