Chapter 2: The Family Falls Apart

Chapter 2: The Family Falls Apart
Preston struggled against the handcuffs.
"You can't arrest me!"
"My father knows judges!"
"My lawyer will destroy this case!"
No one listened.
As officers escorted him across the ballroom, guests moved aside in silence.
Not out of respect.
Out of disgust.
Madison remained standing near the altar.
Her engagement ring suddenly felt heavier than gold.
She slowly removed it.
Placed it into Preston's shaking hand.
"I almost married a man who framed a child."
Her voice never rose.
"I almost became part of this family."
Then she looked at my parents.
"And now I know where he learned it."
Without another word...
She walked away.
Her parents followed.
So did nearly every wedding guest.
Within minutes, the magnificent ballroom was almost empty.
Only our parents remained.
For the first time in decades...
No audience remained to applaud their favorite son.
My father approached me quietly.
"Evelyn..."
"I think we all made mistakes."
I looked down at Sophie sleeping peacefully in the ambulance.
Then back at him.
"No."
"You made choices."
"For thirty years."
My mother's eyes filled with tears.
"Please... don't take Sophie away from us."
I met her gaze.
"You already pushed her away."
"The moment you chose the man who hit her."
She reached for my hand.
I stepped back.
The distance between us was only a few feet.
It felt like an entire lifetime.
