Chapter 4 – The Family Finally Sees the Truth

A week later my aunt called.

Not to defend Dad.

To apologize.

"I visited your parents yesterday."

She hesitated.

"The house was... different."

I waited.

"There were unopened bills everywhere."

"The refrigerator was nearly empty."

"Your father couldn't even remember which medications your mother takes."

I closed my eyes.

Because I knew why.

I had always organized everything.

Quietly.

Without thanks.

My aunt sighed.

"We all thought your father managed the household."

"No," I answered.

"I did."

Word spread through the family.

One by one, relatives began calling.

Some apologized.

Some admitted they had mistaken silence for laziness.

Ryan called again.

"I found your old notebooks."

"What notebooks?"

"The ones where you tracked every bill... every repair... every appointment."

He laughed bitterly.

"You practically ran the entire house."

"I know."

"I'm sorry."

This time...

He meant it.
