Chapter 3 – The Truth Nobody Wanted to Hear
Three days later, Dad appeared at my office.
He hadn't called first.
He simply walked into the lobby demanding to see me.
Security stopped him immediately.
My manager asked quietly,
"Do you know him?"
I looked through the glass doors.
My father stood there with crossed arms, wearing the same expression that had controlled our house for decades.
Except this time...
It controlled nothing.
"Yes," I answered calmly.
"He's my father."
"Would you like to meet him?"
I thought about it.
Then nodded.
Five minutes later we sat across from each other in a conference room.
He skipped every greeting.
"You embarrassed this family."
I folded my hands.
"No."
"I stopped protecting it."
His jaw tightened.
"You abandoned us."
"I moved."
"You left your responsibilities."
"They were never mine."
Silence filled the room.
For years I had imagined this conversation.
Now it felt strangely ordinary.
He stared at me.
"You owe this family."
I smiled sadly.
"I've already paid."
His face reddened.
"Everything we gave you—"
I interrupted him for the first time in my life.
"What exactly did you give me?"
The question hung between us.
He searched for an answer.
None came.
After nearly a minute, he stood.
"This isn't over."
I simply replied,
"It already is."
Security escorted him back outside.
I returned to work.
May you like
For the first time...
His anger stayed behind the glass instead of following me home.
