Chapter 1: The Recording That Destroyed Her Lies

Christopher's thumb touched the screen.

A soft click echoed through the silent courtyard.

Then the recording began.

At first, only the sound of footsteps.

The gentle laughter of Emma feeding bread to the koi beside the pool.

Then Juliette's voice.

Sweet.

Patient.

Deceptive.

"Come closer, sweetheart. The fish are over here."

Emma answered innocently.

"But Daddy said not to stand too close."

A brief pause.

Then Juliette laughed.

"Your daddy worries too much."

Another second passed.

The guests leaned forward.

They heard the scrape of expensive heels across the stone.

Then came Emma's frightened gasp.

"No... please—"

A splash exploded through the phone's speaker.

Followed by Juliette's cold whisper.

"If you disappear... everything becomes mine."

The recording ended.

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Juliette's face turned white.

Several guests instinctively stepped away from her.

One woman covered her mouth.

Another man immediately dialed emergency services.

Juliette shook her head violently.

"No... no, that's edited! He changed it! Christopher, tell them!"

Christopher never looked at her.

He wrapped Emma tighter inside his coat.

"You weren't screaming because you wanted to save my daughter."

His voice remained perfectly calm.

"You were screaming because you realized my recorder had captured your voice."

Police sirens echoed through the estate gates.

Juliette tried to run.

She barely reached the marble staircase before two officers intercepted her.

As they secured handcuffs around her wrists, she screamed toward Christopher.

"You don't understand!"

"It wasn't my idea!"

Christopher finally looked at her.

"What do you mean?"

Juliette's breathing became frantic.

She stared toward the mansion.

Toward one specific window.

"My mother-in-law..."

"Margaret planned everything."

The courtyard erupted with disbelief.

Christopher slowly turned toward the balcony.

His seventy-year-old mother stood perfectly still behind the glass.
