THE DEED THEY NEVER OWNED / Chapter 4 / 20

Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN BEHIND THE PLAN

Eleanor Vale was not a physician, an attorney, or a financial adviser.

She operated a consulting firm that marketed itself as a family-transition service.

Her website promised compassionate solutions for difficult inheritances.

Daniel's investigator found promotional photographs of smiling older couples, testimonials with suspiciously similar wording, and three lawsuits that had ended in confidential settlements.

None of that proved a crime.

But it explained why Patricia had feared her influence.

Years earlier, when Justin's first startup failed, he had borrowed money from a private investment partnership.

Eleanor had helped arrange it.

Patricia discovered later that the repayment terms included aggressive security demands and pressure to involve our family home.

She stopped the transaction before any deed changed hands.

"She told me it was over," I said.

"It was, then," Nora answered.

"But Eleanor never forgot the amount she expected to earn."

I wanted to know why nobody told me.

Nora studied Patricia's photograph on my phone.

"Your wife thought she was shielding you from a business mess while she was sick. She asked me to keep her notes, not to conceal any active danger."

That distinction offered little comfort.

I had spent a decade assuming our worst days were behind us.

At the Aspen lodge, my children had finally found two modest hotel rooms and a way home.

Rachel sent an invoice for the cancellation charges with a note reading, YOU DID THIS.

I forwarded it to Daniel without paying.

That evening a message appeared from an unknown number.

You should have stayed in Aspen, Bruce.

A second followed.

Ask your wife what happened on October 14.

I stared at the screen.

October 14 had been the date of Patricia's last major surgery.

There was no one left to ask her.

Nora read the message and leaned against the counter.

"That's the date Eleanor met her in the hospital."

"Why?"

"To demand money. Patricia refused."

"Did Eleanor threaten her?"

"She threatened to tell Justin something that would destroy his relationship with both of you."

My anger settled into a hard, cold place.

"What was it?"

Nora paused.

"I don't know. Patricia never told me."

Then another message arrived, this one including a photograph of an old check.

The signature was Patricia's.

The amount was two hundred thousand dollars.

The payee was Eleanor Vale.

And on the memo line, in Patricia's handwriting, were three words.

For the children.

I felt the ground of my marriage shift beneath me.

Had my wife paid to hide something all these years?

Before I could ask, Daniel called.

"Bruce, don't return home yet," he said.
