Chapter 15 - THE BOARDROOM WITHOUT HIM

The day Aster Vale announced its leadership decision, Grant waited in a hotel lobby across from headquarters.
He had imagined arriving through the executive entrance as the youngest managing director in company history.
Instead he watched employees enter without seeing him.
The board's special committee published a limited summary of its findings.
The summary identified failures in deal controls, inaccurate material circulated to decision-makers, and breaches of conduct policies.
It referred relevant matters for further review without declaring any person criminally convicted.
Peter Lang was named acting head of the investment division, subject to strengthened oversight.
Mitchell accepted a temporary reduction of his responsibilities while control failures were reviewed.
Grant stared at the announcement until the words blurred.
He had believed Peter's quietness was weakness.
He had never understood that a reputation could survive without theatrics.
In the rental house, Eliza read the announcement only once.
It was not the answer she needed most.
She wanted Owen to sleep without waking at a loud voice.
She wanted her daughter to arrive safely.
She wanted an ordinary bank account whose password she chose.
Her lawyer called with news that the property case was proceeding through the required legal channels.
Grant had filed objections, including the disputed deed, and the court would assess them.
"It may take time," the lawyer warned.
"I know," Eliza answered.
She no longer demanded that every injustice end by midnight.
That evening Wade visited carrying groceries instead of legal documents.
He made pancakes for dinner and let Owen scatter flour over the counter.
"Grandpa," Owen asked, "are you rich?"
Wade looked helplessly at Eliza.
"In pancakes? Very," he answered.
Owen laughed.
Later, when the child was asleep, Wade apologized again for making secrecy into a family habit.
"I thought money was the danger," he said.
"Power without honesty was the danger," Eliza replied.
They sat in silence, a silence neither feared.
Near midnight, Grant received an envelope from the court containing a date for a hearing on the disputed property claim.
He turned the paper over, hoping for some overlooked loophole.
A folded note fell from the envelope.
It was not from the court.
It was unsigned and typed in capital letters.
