Chapter 2: The First Crack

Julian reached for her wrist.

He expected her to flinch.

Instead, Evelyn moved.

It was so fast he barely understood what happened. One second his fingers closed around her arm. The next, his wrist twisted behind his back, his knees hit the floor, and his breath caught painfully in his chest.

The billionaire who owned half of Manhattan was now kneeling in front of the woman he thought he had broken.

Evelyn leaned close to his ear.

“Black belt. Twelve years.”

Julian’s face went pale.

“You lied.”

“No,” she said. “You never asked who I was before you decided what I was worth.”

He tried to stand.

She released him and stepped back, graceful and composed.

Julian stumbled upright, humiliated. His face turned red, not from pain, but from rage.

“You think this changes anything?” he snapped. “I own judges. Doctors. Journalists. Do you know how many people depend on my money?”

Evelyn’s eyes remained steady.

“Yes.”

That single word made him hesitate.

From the hallway came the faint sound of footsteps.

Julian turned sharply.

His private security team entered the bedroom.

Three men in black suits.

Evelyn did not look surprised.

Julian smiled again, trying to recover control.

“You didn’t really think I’d leave this to chance, did you?”

Evelyn glanced at the men.

“No.”

Then the tallest guard lowered his gun.

Not at Evelyn.

At Julian.

Julian froze.

“What are you doing?”

The guard removed his earpiece.

“Sorry, Mr. Cole.”

Detective Grant’s voice came through the room speaker.

“Julian Cole, this is the NYPD. Step away from Evelyn Carter.”

Julian’s mouth opened slightly.

For the first time in his life, no one obeyed him.

Evelyn took one slow step toward him.

“You bought people, Julian. I found the ones you couldn’t buy.”
