Chapter 4 - THE MAN WHO RAISED HIM

Marcus stared at Conrad Hale's name and remembered a hand on his shoulder at his father's funeral.

He had been fourteen years old.

Conrad had crouched beside him behind the church and promised that nothing would happen to him or his mother while Conrad was alive.

Marcus had believed him.

For twenty-three years, Conrad had been more than an uncle.

He had been the man Marcus called when the company nearly failed in 2009.

The man who signed the first expansion loan when no bank would touch them.

The man who gave the toast at Marcus and Claire's wedding.

The man who had sat beside Marcus in the hospital the night Claire died.

Now his name was attached to a resolution prepared before Theo entered the pool.

Owen closed the hospital-room door.

"You need to join the meeting."

Marcus looked at his sleeping son.

"I need to stay here."

"You can do both."

Detective Ortiz was still listening to the tracker audio through headphones.

She lifted one earpiece.

"If you can get this board discussion recorded legally, I want a copy."

Marcus nodded.

Hale Meridian's emergency meetings were automatically archived under company policy.

Owen opened a secure video link.

Sixteen directors appeared in individual squares.

Some were still wearing formal clothes from the gala.

Others were calling from homes or cars.

Conrad Hale occupied the center tile.

He was sixty-eight, silver-haired, and calm in the way powerful men often became calm when everyone else was frightened.

Sebastian appeared two squares below him.

His camera showed the back seat of a car.

Marcus wondered how Sebastian had reached a car so quickly after leaving Theo's room.

The board secretary cleared her throat.

"Mr. Hale has joined."

Conrad leaned closer to his camera.

"Marcus, how is the baby?"

There was genuine concern in his voice.

That was what made Marcus want to throw the laptop across the room.

"Stable."

"Thank God."

Conrad closed his eyes briefly.

"We can postpone if you need to remain with him."

Marcus almost admired the performance.

"You scheduled this thirty-five minutes before he went into the pool."

Several directors moved in their chairs.

Conrad did not.

"The meeting was originally requested because of another matter."

"What matter?"

"A confidential report concerning your conduct."

Marcus glanced at Owen.

Owen shook his head.

They knew of no report.

"Submitted by whom?"

Conrad's eyes hardened slightly.

"That will be discussed in closed session."

"I'm the subject of the meeting."

"Which is precisely why governance rules apply."

Marcus leaned toward the camera.

"A woman pushed my son into a pool tonight so I would attack the person who saved him."

The board went silent.

"There is video."

Conrad folded his hands.

"We have seen a video of you striking an employee."

"Have you seen the video of Victoria pushing the stroller?"

"No authenticated copy has been provided to the board."

Owen muttered beside Marcus.

"He already knows the defense."

Marcus heard him.

So did Conrad.

Conrad's gaze shifted.

"Who is with you?"

"Owen Price."

"Then Mr. Price should know better than to interfere in a board proceeding."

Marcus's restraint snapped.

"Stop talking like this is a policy workshop."

Theo stirred in the crib.

Marcus immediately lowered his voice.

That single movement appeared to interest Conrad.

"This is exactly why we are here."

Marcus stared at him.

"Explain."

Conrad sighed.

"You are exhausted, grieving, and increasingly volatile."

There it was again.

Different mouth.

Same language.

Sebastian had called him shocked.

Conrad called him volatile.

Victoria had called him confused.

All three descriptions moved in the same direction.

Marcus Hale could not trust himself.

Marcus Hale needed control taken from him.

Marcus looked at Sebastian's square.

"Do you agree?"

Sebastian's eyes met the camera.

"I think you should take a leave."

The betrayal was quieter than Marcus expected.

No dramatic pause.

No visible guilt.

Just a recommendation delivered by the man who knew every weakness in Marcus's life.

"For how long?"

"Until this is resolved."

"And who runs the company?"

Sebastian looked at Conrad.

Conrad answered.

"The succession plan names Sebastian."

Marcus nodded slowly.

"Of course it does."

A director named Ruth Palmer interrupted.

"Marcus, this is not a coup."

"Then why was it scheduled before the event that supposedly justifies it?"

Ruth looked toward Conrad's square.

Conrad's expression did not change.

"As I said, we received an earlier report."

"Show it."

"Not while law enforcement may be listening."

Marcus glanced deliberately toward Detective Ortiz.

She smiled without humor.

"They are."

Several directors reacted.

Conrad finally lost a small amount of color.

"Marcus, that is highly inappropriate."

"My son was used as a prop in whatever happened tonight."

His voice became very calm.

"I no longer care what you consider appropriate."

Owen slid a note across the table.

ASK ABOUT THE TRUST.

Marcus read it once.

Then he looked back at the board.

"If you suspend my voting authority, where does it go?"

Conrad answered too quickly.

"Into temporary trust administration."

"Which trustee?"

Silence.

Marcus knew the answer before anyone spoke.

Hale Meridian's founder trust had three succession layers.

Marcus controlled the voting shares while active.

If he became incapacitated or was removed for conduct, authority passed to the senior independent trustee until review.

Marcus had never paid much attention to the second layer because he had never expected it to matter.

The senior independent trustee was Conrad Hale.

Marcus leaned back.

"You."

Conrad's face tightened.

"Temporarily."

"And if anything happened to me?"

"Marcus."

"Answer."

Conrad looked toward the board secretary.

She consulted a document.

"The voting interest would remain in trust for Theodore Hale until he reaches the designated age."

"Who exercises it while Theo is a minor?"

The secretary hesitated.

"His legal guardian, subject to trustee oversight."

Marcus felt his pulse slow.

Victoria and Marcus were supposed to marry in twelve days.

Her attorneys had spent the past month revising guardianship provisions for Theo.

Marcus had approved drafts without reading every line because Sebastian had recommended the firm.

He looked at Owen.

"Get the latest guardianship documents."

Owen began typing.

Conrad spoke from the screen.

"Do not turn your personal panic into conspiracy."

Marcus laughed softly.

"My fiancee pushed my son into a pool while speaking to a man who said I would lose control."

Conrad's eyes narrowed.

"A man?"

Marcus watched Sebastian.

Sebastian did not blink.

"We recovered audio."

This time the reaction was unmistakable.

Sebastian's gaze shifted away from the camera for half a second.

Conrad went completely still.

Marcus saw both.

"Interesting."

Sebastian leaned forward.

"What exactly is on the audio?"

Marcus smiled for the first time that night.

"Why?"

"Because if you're accusing me-"

"I didn't say your name."

Sebastian stopped.

No one spoke.

Marcus let the silence grow.

Then Owen's computer chimed.

He opened a PDF from Marcus's family law firm.

His expression changed.

"Marcus."

"What?"

Owen turned the screen.

It was a guardianship amendment drafted six days earlier.

Marcus recognized his electronic signature at the bottom.

He did not remember signing it.

The amendment stated that if Marcus became incapacitated, removed as active trustee, or otherwise unable to serve as Theo's primary guardian, temporary guardianship would pass to Marcus's spouse or intended spouse under an attached domestic partnership declaration.

The declaration named Victoria Sterling.

Marcus felt physically ill.

"I never approved this."

Owen scrolled.

"The digital certificate says you did."

Detective Ortiz stepped closer.

"Can that be forged?"

Owen nodded.

"If someone had access to his signing token."

Marcus looked at Sebastian.

Sebastian's face was unreadable.

Conrad spoke first.

"This is absurd."

Marcus ignored him.

"Sebastian, where is my corporate signing token?"

Sebastian frowned.

"Your office safe."

"No."

Marcus remembered the last time he had used it.

Three weeks earlier, he had signed acquisition papers from Sebastian's conference room.

He had left early because Theo had a fever.

Sebastian had promised to secure the token afterward.

Marcus leaned toward the camera.

"I left it with you."

Sebastian's jaw tightened.

"And I returned it."

"When?"

"The next morning."

"To whom?"

"Your assistant."

Owen stopped typing.

"No, you didn't."

Sebastian looked at him.

Owen's voice sharpened.

"I am his assistant."

The board fell silent again.

Sebastian turned away from the camera as if someone had spoken to him inside the car.

For one second, another face appeared reflected in the dark window beside him.

A woman's face.

Silver earrings.

Blonde hair.

Victoria.

Marcus stood so quickly that his chair fell backward.

"Where are you?"

Sebastian looked at the reflection and realized what Marcus had seen.

The video feed went black.

Detective Ortiz was already on her phone.

"Find Cross's vehicle."

Conrad called Marcus's name from the laptop.

Marcus looked at his uncle.

Conrad seemed genuinely shaken now.

"Marcus, listen to me."

"No."

Marcus closed the laptop.

"I've spent the entire night listening to people who needed me confused."

He looked at Owen.

"Find out where Sebastian is taking her."

Owen nodded.

Marcus turned toward Theo's crib.

A small white rabbit sat on the windowsill.

The nurse had brought a replacement from the gift shop.

Marcus stared at it and thought of the missing tracker.

Then Detective Ortiz's phone rang.

She listened.

Her expression changed.

"They found Victoria's phone."

Marcus looked at her.

"Where?"

"Not with the property taken from her."

Ortiz paused.

"It was taped under the seat of the ambulance that brought Elena here."

Elena appeared in the doorway behind them.

She had heard everything.

Her face went pale.

"That isn't possible."

Ortiz looked at her.

"Why not?"

Elena swallowed.

"Because I saw Victoria hand her phone to Daniel Rusk before the police entered the ballroom."

Marcus felt the room tighten around him.

"Then who put it under Elena's ambulance seat?"

Elena looked toward the hospital corridor.

"Someone who wanted the police to find it there."

Ortiz opened the evidence photo sent to her phone.

Victoria's phone screen was cracked but still lit.

A draft message was visible.

It had never been sent.

The recipient was saved only as C.H.

The message contained nine words.

ELENA SAW THE CAMERA.
