Chapter 15 - THE SECOND SERVER

The hidden room had no windows and one steel door.
Smoke entered slowly through a vent near the ceiling.
Ortiz tried her radio.
Static.
One forensic officer examined the electronic lock.
"Power fail-safe should open it."
"It didn't," Owen said.
"Because someone changed the fail-safe."
Marcus looked at the red ledger.
The same instinct that once made him run toward problems told him to start tearing at the door.
He did not.
He forced himself to look around first.
Claire had built this room to preserve evidence.
She would not have built a single exit into a sealed underground vault without considering fire.
"There has to be another way out."
Ortiz looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because Claire was paranoid for good reason."
He scanned the shelves.
One section of stone behind the server showed a narrow vertical seam.
Marcus pushed.
Nothing.
Owen joined him.
They moved the old server rack aside.
Behind it was a recessed handle.
Marcus pulled.
A section of wall opened inward onto a narrow maintenance tunnel.
Cold air rushed through.
Owen stared at him.
"Your wife was terrifying."
Marcus almost smiled.
"Yes."
They entered single file.
The tunnel climbed behind the cellar walls and opened into an old service corridor beneath the kitchen.
Smoke filled the upper floor, but sprinklers had already activated.
The fire was concentrated in a records room near the electrical panel.
Firefighters were entering from the west wing.
Ortiz found Walter outside with two officers.
He was shaken but unharmed.
A black utility vehicle had crashed through the east gate minutes before the fire started.
The driver abandoned it near the woods.
Police found no one inside.
The vehicle was registered to Northstar Risk Consulting.
Daniel's network again.
Marcus looked toward the tree line.
"Daniel is in custody."
Ortiz nodded.
"Which means Northstar is bigger than Daniel."
The forensic team carried Claire's server and the red case outside.
One officer held a smaller device wrapped in evidence plastic.
"We found the mirror."
The second server had been hidden inside the lodge's old dumbwaiter shaft.
It had continued backing up the first server every night for fourteen months.
Someone had remotely deleted selected files from the visible machine that morning.
The mirror kept the deleted versions.
Claire had outplanned them from the grave.
At the mobile command vehicle, technicians began imaging the drive.
Marcus called Elena.
She answered before the first ring finished.
"You took too long."
"We got trapped."
Silence.
Marcus regretted the sentence immediately.
"We're out."
"What happened?"
He told her about the fire, the steel door, and the tunnel.
Elena was quiet.
"You promised to call when you came back up."
"I did."
"Eventually."
Marcus heard Theo babbling in the background.
The sound steadied him.
"How is he?"
"Trying to eat the court nurse's badge."
Marcus smiled.
"Good."
Then he told her the part that mattered.
"Claire was right about Conrad."
Elena said nothing.
"And Sebastian is Conrad's son."
A long pause.
"Mrs. Hale knew?"
"She found the settlement."
Elena exhaled.
"That explains the Christmas photographs."
Marcus frowned.
"What photographs?"
"Every year Mr. Conrad made sure Sebastian stood beside him."
Marcus remembered.
He had never seen it because he had never been looking.
The most dangerous patterns were often the ones repeated openly.
A technician waved Ortiz over.
"We recovered recent access logs."
Marcus ended the call after promising to return soon.
This time Elena made him repeat the word soon as a statement, not a guarantee.
The server logs showed remote connections from three devices.
One belonged to Daniel Rusk.
One belonged to Sebastian Cross.
The third used a private network certificate issued to Conrad Hale's office.
The connection from Conrad's certificate had occurred at 7:14 that morning.
Walter had seen Conrad enter the cellar around seven.
The timing matched.
But the deleted files were more important.
One folder was labeled MARCH16.
Inside were scanned photographs from Claire's crash investigation.
The official report showed a damaged brake line caused by impact.
An earlier draft said something different.
PRE-IMPACT CUT CONSISTENT WITH TOOL CONTACT.
Marcus read the line without blinking.
"The brake line was cut."
Ortiz looked at the report.
"According to the first examiner."
"Who changed it?"
The file history contained a note.
REVISED PER NORTHSTAR CONSULTANT.
A signature followed.
D. RUSK.
Marcus had to walk away from the screen.
Claire had been sedated.
Her brake line had been cut.
The crash was no accident.
The evidence had existed from the beginning.
Daniel buried it.
Voss buried the drug result.
Sebastian controlled the company access.
Conrad controlled the trust.
The machine worked because each man removed one piece.
No single lie had to carry the whole crime.
Owen called Marcus back.
"There's another folder."
VICTORIA.
The files began eight months after Claire's death.
Background checks.
Photographs.
Debt records.
A civil lawsuit from a former employer.
And a document titled RECRUITMENT.
Marcus opened it.
Victoria Sterling had not met Sebastian casually at a museum fundraiser.
She had been selected.
Her debts made her vulnerable.
Her public image made her useful.
Her resemblance to Claire in height and coloring had been noted in a bullet point.
Marcus felt disgust crawl through him.
The plan listed objectives.
GAIN MARCUS'S TRUST.
ENTER HOUSEHOLD.
BUILD RELATIONSHIP WITH THEO.
ISOLATE DOMESTIC STAFF.
ESTABLISH RECORD OF MARCUS VOLATILITY.
FINALIZE GUARDIANSHIP LANGUAGE.
There was one final line.
TRIGGER EVENT BEFORE ANNUAL FOUNDER VOTE.
Owen checked the calendar.
The annual founder vote was in three days.
At that meeting, Hale Meridian directors would approve a major merger worth eleven billion dollars.
With Conrad controlling Marcus's trust votes, he could force the merger through.
Marcus knew the buyer.
A private infrastructure fund called Arden Crest.
He had rejected their offer twice because the price undervalued key assets.
Owen searched the red ledger.
Arden Crest appeared twelve times.
So did a code Marcus had not noticed before.
SC BENEFICIAL 7.5%.
Sebastian stood to receive a hidden seven-and-a-half-percent interest after the merger.
Conrad would gain control.
Sebastian would gain wealth.
Hale Meridian would be broken apart.
Theo's inheritance would be reduced to cash managed by the very trustee who engineered the sale.
The baby had been used not just to remove Marcus.
His future had been the prize.
Ortiz's phone rang.
She listened, then looked at Marcus.
"Victoria has turned herself in."
Marcus's expression hardened.
"Where?"
"Manhattan South."
"Why now?"
Ortiz listened to the officer on the line.
"Because she says Sebastian tried to kill her last night."
The blood in Sebastian's abandoned car suddenly made sense.
Victoria had not left willingly.
Ortiz continued listening.
"She says she has evidence."
"What kind?"
Ortiz's eyes met Marcus's.
May you like
"A recording of Conrad ordering Sebastian to finish what they started with Claire."
