Chapter 15 - THE MEETING BEFORE THE WEDDING

Daniel read the board consents in Ruth's office.
Eight signatures.
Eight directors agreeing that public scandal, impaired judgment, and an undisclosed relationship with a subordinate justified placing Stephen Hale in temporary control.
"They signed this without calling me?" Daniel asked.
Ruth poured coffee.
"Stephen gave them a story."
"And they believed it."
"He gave them documents."
"What documents?"
Ruth handed him another folder.
Daniel opened it.
The first page was a photograph of him entering Grace's apartment late at night.
The second was a company expense entry for outside legal services connected to Rachel's firm.
The third was the leaked household incident report about Vanessa's bracelet.
The fourth was an email Daniel had sent HR ordering that Grace not be suspended while the theft allegation was investigated.
Placed together, the documents told a convincing lie.
Daniel had protected an employee accused of stealing from his fiancee.
He had visited that employee at night.
He had arranged legal help when her ex sought custody.
Then he had broken off his engagement.
"I can explain all of this," Daniel said.
"Of course you can."
Ruth sat across from him.
"But board fights are not won by explanations. They are won by evidence people can understand before they get bored."
Daniel tossed the folder down.
"So what do you suggest?"
"Give Stephen what he wants."
Daniel stared at her.
"My job?"
"Confidence."
Ruth smiled slightly.
"He thinks he has eight votes. Let him keep thinking that."
"Does he?"
"Three signatures are real."
"Only three?"
"Two directors told me they never signed. One is in Japan and has not checked email in two days. Another signature belongs to a director who uses a middle initial on every legal document except this one."
Daniel sat forward.
"Forged consents."
"Looks that way."
"Then call Monday's meeting off."
"No."
Ruth's eyes hardened.
"I want Stephen to explain the documents in the room where he planned to use them."
Daniel looked at his aunt.
"You are terrifying."
"Your father said the same thing."
She slid a final paper across the desk.
It was an invitation.
Vanessa and Daniel's wedding had originally been scheduled for the following Saturday.
The venue deposit was nonrefundable.
So was the private ballroom reserved for the rehearsal dinner.
Ruth tapped the card.
"Stephen believes Vanessa is meeting you tomorrow night to negotiate a private reconciliation."
Daniel frowned.
"Why would he believe that?"
"Because Vanessa asked your attorney for one."
"She did what?"
"Her lawyer proposed a confidential settlement."
Ruth handed him an email.
Vanessa would retract public insinuations about Grace.
She would cooperate in ending Kyle's custody action.
She would return property taken from the estate.
In exchange, Daniel would sign a revised premarital financial agreement, restore the engagement publicly for ninety days, and grant Vanessa limited voting proxy rights in his personal holding company.
Daniel almost laughed.
"She still wants the proxy."
"Apparently."
"After everything."
"Desperation makes people repetitive."
Daniel read the proposal again.
"She thinks I might accept this?"
"She thinks you care about Grace's reputation enough to consider it."
Daniel hated that Vanessa understood him correctly.
"I will not sign."
"I know."
Ruth leaned forward.
"But you should attend the meeting."
Preparing for the hotel meeting required a kind of deception Daniel despised.
Owen called it controlled exposure.
Ruth called it letting fools believe their own math.
Daniel called it sitting across from two people he once loved and pretending he had not heard enough to leave.
The afternoon before the meeting, he met with counsel in Ruth's conference room.
A whiteboard held three columns.
KNOWN.
SUSPECTED.
NEED.
Under KNOWN sat the replica bracelet, VC Events payments, Bellweather ownership, forged signature evidence, Stephen's Rivergate conflict, and the recording Grace had made.
Under SUSPECTED sat the staircase, the stolen watch, the camera outages, and the purpose of the incapacity document.
Under NEED were two questions.
Did Stephen knowingly participate in the forged authority?
What event were they expecting to trigger it?
Daniel looked at the whiteboard.
"I hate that my life has columns."
Ruth sipped coffee.
"Your life has always had columns. You are a developer."
Owen handed Daniel a recording device disguised inside the clasp of his father's watch strap.
Daniel stared at it.
"Absolutely not."
"Why?"
"That is my father's watch."
"Which you are going to wear anyway."
"I am not turning it into surveillance equipment."
Ruth raised an eyebrow.
"Your father once hid a tape recorder inside a flower arrangement during a zoning dispute."
Daniel stared at her.
"What?"
"Nineteen ninety-eight. Ask me later."
Owen smiled.
"Family tradition."
Daniel reluctantly held out the watch.
"If you scratch it, I will ruin your life."
"That is the billionaire spirit."
The attorneys reviewed what Daniel could safely say.
Do not threaten.
Do not promise immunity.
Do not claim police authority.
Do not bluff about evidence that did not exist.
Most important, do not let anger become the conversation.
Daniel laughed at that one.
"You may as well tell me not to have blood."
Ruth leaned forward.
"Then remember Grace."
Daniel looked at her.
"What about her?"
"She sat across from Vanessa while Vanessa threatened her child and still asked clean questions."
Daniel said nothing.
Ruth continued.
"You have more money, more lawyers, more security, and more power than Grace Parker had in that restaurant."
Her eyes hardened.
"Try to show half her discipline."
Daniel looked away.
"That was rude."
"Useful, though."
"Unfortunately."
Before leaving for the hotel, Daniel called Grace.
He had not planned to.
When she answered, Lily was singing loudly in the background.
"Bad time?"
"There is no good time during the dinosaur song."
Daniel smiled.
"I have a meeting with Vanessa and Stephen tonight."
Grace went quiet.
"Together?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"They think I might negotiate."
"Will you?"
"No."
"Then why go?"
Daniel looked at the columns on the whiteboard.
"Because I need to know whether Stephen admits involvement in the incapacity plan."
Grace exhaled.
"Is Owen there?"
"Yes."
"Lawyers?"
"Several."
"Security?"
"Yes."
"Then why are you calling me?"
Daniel had no polished answer.
"I do not know."
Grace was silent.
Then she said, "Do not go in there trying to make Vanessa admit she never loved you."
Daniel stopped.
"I was not planning to."
"You were thinking about it."
He did not answer.
"That question does not help you," Grace said.
"If she says she loved you, it does not erase what she did. If she says she never loved you, it does not make the evidence stronger."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"You sound like Owen."
"That is offensive."
He laughed softly.
"Ask about choices," Grace said.
"Not feelings."
The sentence followed Daniel all the way to the hotel.
In the elevator, he looked at his father's watch.
His father had loved people badly sometimes.
He had trusted people who disappointed him.
He had also believed actions eventually revealed what explanations hid.
The elevator doors opened.
Owen's voice came through Daniel's earpiece.
"Recorder is live."
Daniel stepped into the corridor.
"Remember," Owen said.
"Clean questions."
Daniel looked toward the ballroom doors.
"I remember."
Inside, two people were waiting to explain why their choices should matter less than their intentions.
Daniel was finally ready to stop helping them.
The next night, Daniel entered the rehearsal-dinner ballroom at seven sharp.
The room was supposed to have held eighty guests.
Now only one table remained set beneath the chandeliers.
Vanessa stood near the windows.
She wore a dark blue dress Daniel had once told her was his favorite.
Stephen Hale stood beside her.
Daniel stopped.
Vanessa gave a small smile.
"I thought it was time everyone stopped pretending."
Daniel looked at Stephen.
"You agreed to this?"
Stephen loosened his tie.
"Sit down."
Daniel almost hit him.
Instead, he sat.
Owen had fitted Daniel's watch with a recording device before he arrived.
The ballroom also had hotel security cameras.
Ruth was two floors above with counsel.
Daniel felt more alone than he had in years.
Stephen sat opposite him.
"You are angry."
"That is observant."
"I did not want it to go this far."
Daniel stared at him.
"Which part? The forged signatures? The stolen watch? The power of attorney? The child you helped terrorize?"
Stephen's eyes flicked toward Vanessa.
Vanessa's face tightened.
"I did not terrorize Lily."
Daniel looked at her.
"You threatened her mother with custody."
"I gave Grace a way out."
"You mean the declaration."
Vanessa looked surprised.
Good.
She did not know about the recording yet.
Stephen raised a hand.
"This is getting us nowhere."
Daniel turned to him.
"Then tell me where we are going."
Stephen exhaled.
"Rivergate is overleveraged."
"No, it is not."
"It will be if the transit authority changes the easement structure."
"Then we renegotiate."
"That takes a year. Maybe two."
"So you secretly invested in adjacent land?"
Stephen's jaw tightened.
"I protected an option."
"For yourself."
"For all of us."
Daniel laughed.
"Do not include me in your fraud."
"You think everything is clean because lawyers write clean words around it."
Stephen leaned forward.
"Your father made side deals."
Daniel's voice dropped.
"Do not use him."
"He understood survival."
"He understood loyalty."
Stephen's face changed.
"Your father promised me equity he never gave me."
There it was.
Thirteen years of resentment, finally spoken.
"So this is revenge?"
"No."
Stephen looked exhausted.
"It is correction."
"By forging my incapacity documents?"
"That was not supposed to be used unless necessary."
The words settled over the table.
Daniel kept his face still.
"Necessary for what?"
Stephen realized what he had said.
Vanessa closed her eyes briefly.
Daniel leaned forward.
"Necessary if I disagreed?"
Stephen said nothing.
"Necessary if I discovered Northline?"
Still nothing.
"Necessary if I fell down my own staircase?"
Vanessa snapped her head toward him.
"I had nothing to do with the stairs."
Daniel looked at her.
"I did not ask you."
Her face paled.
Stephen stood.
"We are done."
Daniel remained seated.
"No."
Stephen looked at him.
"Sit down."
For a moment, neither man moved.
Then Stephen slowly sat again.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
"What do you want?"
"I want what you promised me."
"A marriage?"
"A life that cannot be taken away because you wake up one morning and decide your maid looks more honest than I do."
Daniel's anger sharpened.
"Grace is not why I left you."
"She is why you looked."
Vanessa's eyes burned.
"Before her, you ignored what you did not want to see."
Daniel could not deny it.
That was perhaps the cruelest truth she had spoken.
"And now?" he asked.
Vanessa pushed the settlement agreement across the table.
"Sign."
Daniel did not touch it.
"You retract everything about Grace?"
"Yes."
"Kyle withdraws?"
"Yes."
"How can you guarantee that?"
Vanessa hesitated.
Daniel saw it.
"Because you are paying him."
"Because I can persuade him."
"Same thing."
Stephen leaned forward.
"Daniel, take the deal."
"Why?"
"Because Monday, the board removes you."
Daniel looked at him.
"You seem certain."
Stephen smiled.
"I have eight votes."
Daniel looked at the man who had once sat beside his father's hospital bed.
"Do you?"
The smile faded slightly.
Daniel picked up the agreement.
Vanessa relaxed.
Then Daniel tore it in half.
Once.
Twice.
Four times.
He placed the pieces on the table.
"Monday should be interesting."
He stood and left.
Behind him, Vanessa said something he almost missed.
"Once the marriage is legal, the board cannot keep him from me."
Daniel stopped outside the ballroom door.
Stephen answered in a low voice.
"There is not going to be a marriage now."
Vanessa's reply was colder.
"Then we do not need a marriage. We only need one clean fall."
Daniel looked down at his father's watch.
May you like
The recorder was still running.
