Chapter 14 - THE CUSTODY TRAP

Rachel called the police before Grace finished reading the message.

This time, Grace did not argue.

The photograph changed everything.

The first picture of Lily at preschool had been frightening.

This one had been taken less than ten feet from Grace's apartment.

Someone had watched her carry groceries upstairs.

Someone had seen Lily fall asleep in the car.

Someone had waited close enough to photograph her through the glass.

A detective named Aaron Mills arrived twenty minutes later.

He spoke quietly, photographed the envelope, and asked Grace not to touch anything else delivered to the apartment.

"Do you have any idea what statement this refers to?" he asked.

"No."

Grace looked at Rachel.

Rachel's expression said she did not believe that answer would remain true for long.

It did not.

At 3:06 that afternoon, an email arrived from an attorney representing Vanessa.

Attached was a proposed declaration for Grace to sign.

Grace read the first paragraph and felt nauseated.

It stated that Daniel had shown "increasingly inappropriate personal interest" in her during the preceding six months.

The second paragraph claimed Daniel encouraged Grace to believe Vanessa had framed her for theft.

The third stated that Daniel staged his concerns about household security to justify ending his engagement.

The fourth said Grace feared losing her job if she refused his attention.

The fifth denied that Vanessa had ever threatened Grace or Lily.

In exchange for signing, Vanessa would provide a sworn statement in the custody case saying Grace was an excellent mother and that the bracelet incident had been a misunderstanding.

Grace stared at the document.

"She creates the problem and then sells me the cure."

Rachel nodded.

"That is what it looks like."

"Can we prove the threat came from her?"

"Not yet."

"Then I want to meet her."

Rachel shook her head.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because people who photograph children through car windows do not get private meetings."

"Then public."

"Grace."

"A restaurant. Cameras. You nearby. Police nearby if they want."

Rachel studied her.

"What are you hoping she does?"

"Talks."

"She is careful."

Grace looked at the false declaration.

"She is careful when she thinks she is winning."

Rachel's eyes narrowed.

"And you think she believes she is winning now?"

"I think she believes I am scared enough to do anything for Lily."

Grace folded the statement.

"She is right."

Rachel waited.

"Just not about which thing I will do."

The meeting was arranged for the following morning at a hotel restaurant in SouthPark.

Vanessa arrived eleven minutes late wearing a cream suit and dark glasses.

Grace was already seated.

Her phone lay face down on the table.

A second recorder, provided by Detective Mills after confirming North Carolina law permitted one-party consent, sat inside Grace's handbag.

Rachel occupied a table near the lobby.

Owen sat at the bar pretending to read financial news.

Daniel was nowhere near the hotel.

Grace had insisted.

Vanessa sat down and removed her glasses.

"You look tired."

Grace almost admired the opening.

"You threatened my daughter."

Vanessa glanced toward the waiter.

"Coffee?"

"No."

"I am ordering one."

"You can pour it on the floor for all I care."

Vanessa smiled faintly.

"There she is."

"Who?"

"The real Grace."

Vanessa leaned back.

"Not the quiet little martyr Daniel thinks he discovered."

Grace kept her hands beneath the table because they were shaking.

"Did you send the photograph?"

"What photograph?"

"Lily asleep in my car."

Vanessa's smile vanished.

"That sounds frightening."

"It was."

"You should tell police."

"I did."

Vanessa's eyes flickered.

Grace saw it.

"Good."

"Did you pay Kyle?"

"No."

"The recovery number on the account he emailed is yours."

Vanessa's face remained calm.

"Numbers can be spoofed."

"Did you plant the bracelet?"

"No."

"The earrings?"

"No."

"The watch?"

Vanessa leaned forward.

"You know what your problem is, Grace?"

"Apparently I have several."

"You think Daniel is going to reward you for this."

Grace stared at her.

"Reward me with what?"

"Do not insult both of us."

Vanessa's voice softened.

"You think if you stand beside him while everything burns, he will finally see you."

Grace felt anger rise.

"He is my employer."

"He framed your daughter's drawing."

Grace went still.

Vanessa smiled.

"You did not know I knew that?"

"It was a Christmas drawing."

"He kept it."

"Because Lily is four."

"Men like Daniel do not keep things accidentally."

Grace leaned forward.

"And women like you do not destroy people's lives accidentally."

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"Sign the declaration."

There it was.

"Why?"

"Because it ends this."

"For who?"

"For you."

"What about Kyle?"

"I can make his attorney disappear."

Grace's heartbeat thudded in her ears.

"How?"

Vanessa realized the mistake.

"I mean my attorney can speak with his."

"Why would his attorney listen to yours?"

"Because lawyers talk."

Grace let silence stretch.

Vanessa became impatient.

"You want your daughter safe?"

"Yes."

"Then stop making yourself useful to Daniel."

Grace almost stopped breathing.

"Useful how?"

"He was supposed to doubt you."

Vanessa's mouth closed.

Too late.

Grace heard Owen's chair scrape faintly at the bar.

"What did you say?"

Vanessa's eyes became flat.

"You heard me."

"I want to hear it again."

Vanessa leaned closer.

"You were supposed to leave."

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

"The bracelet should have been enough."

Grace felt cold from scalp to fingertips.

"You planted it."

Vanessa smiled.

"I did not say that."

"No."

Grace held her gaze.

"You said worse."

Vanessa stood.

"Sign by five."

"Or what?"

"Or Kyle gets every photograph, every rumor, every document that makes you look unstable, dishonest, and obsessed with your employer."

Grace's hands stopped shaking.

"You are threatening me."

Vanessa put on her dark glasses.

"I am explaining consequences."

She left.

Grace remained seated until Rachel reached her.

"Tell me we got that," Grace whispered.

Owen appeared behind Rachel.

"Every word."

Grace closed her eyes.

For the first time in weeks, fear loosened its grip enough to let anger take its place.

That afternoon, Rachel filed the recording under seal with the family court.

Detective Mills sent a copy to prosecutors reviewing the stalking complaint.

Daniel listened to it once.

He had to stop halfway through.

Not because of what Vanessa said about him.

Because of the calm way she used Lily as currency.

Grace did not feel victorious when Vanessa walked out of the restaurant.

She felt dirty.

The recorder in her handbag seemed heavier than a phone should be.

Rachel sat down across from her.

"You did well."

"I lied to her."

"About what?"

"I let her believe I might sign."

"That is not illegal."

"I did not ask whether it was legal."

Rachel studied her.

"You are allowed to dislike what survival requires."

Grace looked through the restaurant window.

Vanessa's car pulled away from the hotel.

"She said I was supposed to leave."

"I heard."

"She said it like I was furniture in the wrong room."

Rachel reached for the recorder.

"And now she said it where evidence can hear her."

Owen joined them.

"I made two backup copies before she reached the parking garage."

Grace almost smiled.

"Of course you did."

"One goes to Detective Mills. One to counsel. Original stays sealed."

Grace looked at him.

"Do people ever just tell you the truth without all this?"

Owen considered it.

"Sometimes."

"That pause was depressing."

"Occupational hazard."

Grace's phone buzzed.

Daniel.

She stared at the name.

"He knows the meeting is over," Rachel said.

"I know."

"You can answer."

"I know."

Grace did not answer.

Not yet.

She needed five minutes in which she was not Daniel's employee, Vanessa's target, Kyle's ex-wife, Rachel's client, or a witness in anyone's investigation.

She needed to be a woman drinking cold coffee in a hotel restaurant.

Five minutes later, she called him back.

"Are you safe?" Daniel asked immediately.

"Yes."

"Did she threaten you?"

"Yes."

His breathing changed.

"What did she say?"

"Owen has the recording."

"Grace."

"If I repeat it right now, I am going to start shaking again."

Daniel became quiet.

"Okay."

She appreciated that he did not say I know.

"She admitted I was supposed to leave after the bracelet."

Silence.

"She said that?"

"Almost exactly."

Daniel swore softly.

"And she can make Kyle's lawyer disappear."

"That ties her to the custody case."

"Maybe."

Daniel heard Owen in the background laugh.

"You have all infected me," Grace said.

Daniel almost laughed too.

Then his voice became serious.

"I want you out of your apartment tonight."

Grace closed her eyes.

"Third no is coming."

"Listen first."

She waited.

"Not my property. Not a company apartment. Rachel can choose the hotel. Whitfield security will remain outside, not on your floor. You pay the room if that makes you feel better and I reimburse only if you decide later."

Grace blinked.

He had anticipated every objection.

"You have been practicing."

"Constantly."

She looked at Rachel.

Rachel nodded.

"One night," Grace said.

"Two."

"One."

"One and we revisit tomorrow."

"Fine."

"Thank you."

"Do not sound so pleased."

"Impossible."

That night, Lily treated the hotel as an adventure.

She jumped between the two beds until Grace threatened to make her sleep on the carpet.

She ordered grilled cheese from room service and announced that hotel ketchup tasted richer.

Grace did not ask what that meant.

At nine, Lily fell asleep holding the television remote.

Grace sat by the window looking at the parking lot below.

A security car was parked exactly where Daniel promised, far enough away not to feel like a guard outside the door.

Her phone buzzed.

A message from Daniel.

No questions. Just checking that you are there.

Grace wrote back.

We are here. Lily says the ketchup is rich.

Daniel replied.

I have no useful response to that.

Grace smiled.

Then another message arrived.

I listened to the recording. I am sorry you had to sit across from her to get it.

Grace stared at the screen.

She typed three different answers and deleted them all.

Finally she wrote.

Make it matter.

Daniel's reply came a minute later.

I will.

The next morning, Rachel called before seven.

"We have movement in the custody case."

Grace sat up.

"What?"

"Kyle's lawyer wants to discuss postponing the temporary hearing."

"Why?"

"Because someone finally explained to him that being paid by a party connected to fabricated evidence is bad for a family-law strategy."

Grace looked at sleeping Lily.

"Does that mean it is over?"

"No."

Grace sighed.

"You and Owen really are in a club."

"But it means they are scared."

That was not victory.

It was the first sound of the trap breaking.

At 4:57 p.m., three minutes before Vanessa's deadline, Grace sent one message.

I WILL NOT SIGN.

Vanessa replied almost immediately.

Then you made your choice.

At 5:11, Stephen Hale entered Ruth Whitfield's office and handed her a packet containing eight board consents supporting Daniel's temporary removal as CEO.

There were eleven voting directors.

Daniel needed six to survive Monday.

May you like

According to the packet, he had only three.
