Chapter 19 - The Last Command

The fire alarm turned the boardroom into chaos.

Directors rushed toward the glass doors.

Smoke rolled into the executive corridor.

Red emergency lights flashed against the windows.

Titan barked once and moved closer to me.

Roman grabbed my arm before the crowd could separate us.

"Stay with me."

This time I did not argue.

Reeves shouted for everyone to use the east stairwell.

One detective took custody of the black transmitter Titan had ripped from beneath Matteo's chair.

The other moved toward Matteo.

But Matteo was no longer there.

His chair stood empty.

The side door behind the executive service bar swung slowly on its hinge.

Gabriel saw it first.

"He ran."

Roman turned toward the door.

Reeves blocked him.

"You stay with the evacuation."

"My uncle just left through a secured exit during a fire alarm he helped trigger."

"Which is exactly why I have officers going after him."

A sharp crash sounded from farther down the service corridor.

Titan's head snapped toward it.

Then he began pulling me in the same direction.

"Roman."

Roman looked at the dog.

Titan sniffed the floor near the side door.

His body tightened.

"The scent," I said.

"Matteo had it on the cane."

"If he touched the door, Titan may be following it."

Reeves swore.

"Fine."

"But nobody goes ahead of my people."

We moved into the service corridor behind two officers.

The smoke was thinner there.

A catering cart lay on its side near the freight elevator.

One security guard sat against the wall holding a towel to his forehead.

He pointed toward the stairwell.

"Mr. Matteo went down."

"Another man was waiting for him."

Roman stopped.

"Who?"

"Couldn't see."

"Dark coat."

"He hit the alarm panel and they ran."

Gabriel looked at Roman.

"Damian."

Titan pulled toward the stairwell.

We descended three floors before the fire system sealed the next landing.

The officers redirected us through a conference level.

People were streaming toward emergency exits.

Phones rang everywhere.

Building speakers ordered evacuation.

Then every screen in the hallway flickered.

The Calder Group logo disappeared.

A countdown appeared instead.

00:17:42.

Roman stared at it.

"What is that?"

Gabriel's face drained of color.

"Server purge."

"Red Harbor?"

"Yes."

The countdown dropped another second.

00:17:41.

A message appeared beneath it.

LEGACY ARCHIVE TERMINATION IN PROGRESS.

Roman looked at Gabriel.

"Can you stop it?"

"Not from here."

"The old server requires local confirmation to cancel a purge."

"Where?"

Gabriel did not need to answer.

We all knew.

Pier Nineteen.

Mason's phone rang.

He listened for three seconds.

"Harbor cameras caught Matteo and Damian leaving the tower garage in a black sedan."

Roman's jaw tightened.

"Direction?"

"Waterfront."

Reeves touched his radio.

Police units were already moving.

Roman looked at the countdown again.

"They aren't running."

Gabriel nodded.

"They're cleaning the archive before they run."

Titan suddenly stopped near a dropped overcoat.

He sniffed it.

Then growled.

Matteo's coat.

Inside one pocket, Reeves found a small glass vial.

The cedar-based target compound.

Matteo had carried it with him into the boardroom.

Reeves sealed it.

Roman stared at the coat.

"He wasn't just supervising."

"No," I said.

"He wanted to be close enough to watch Titan attack you."

Roman looked toward the evacuation doors.

"Then let's make sure he gets to watch the plan fail completely."

We reached the street through the lower lobby.

Fire crews were entering as employees poured out.

The smoke had come from two deliberately ignited storage closets, not from any major structural fire.

The alarm had been cover.

Just like Titan's planned attack at the gala.

Create panic.

Turn heads.

Move while everyone watches the wrong thing.

Roman looked at Gabriel.

"They use the same trick every time."

Gabriel nodded.

"Father taught Matteo that confusion is cheaper than force."

"And more deniable."

Reeves put us in separate vehicles with officers.

Roman hated it.

I could tell because he argued for exactly twelve seconds before getting into the back seat beside me and Titan.

The dog lay across the floor with his head on my shoe.

Roman looked down.

"At least he's touching one of us."

"Jealous?"

"Deeply."

For the first time, his answer was not entirely a joke.

I looked out the window.

Boston slid past in gray pre-dawn light.

"You know this doesn't end just because they get arrested."

Roman's face became serious.

"I know."

"Your company."

"Your father."

"Gabriel."

"Lucian."

"Everything people think they know about your family is about to change."

"Good."

I looked at him.

"Good?"

Roman watched the harbor through the opposite window.

"I've spent half my life protecting a name I assumed meant something fixed."

"Tonight I learned the name was being used as a lock on rooms I wasn't allowed to enter."

"I don't need to protect that."

"I need to open it."

Titan lifted his head at the sound of Roman's voice.

Roman did not reach for him.

The restraint mattered.

Titan lowered his head again.

When we arrived at Pier Nineteen, the countdown showed nine minutes.

Police had sealed the main vehicle gate.

The black sedan sat abandoned near the north terminal.

One door remained open.

No Matteo.

No Damian.

Gabriel led Reeves toward the old server level.

Roman and I followed only after the route was cleared.

Titan stayed with us because leaving him alone in another unfamiliar vehicle was not an option, and because his secondary chip might still be required if Gabriel's copied token failed.

I hated bringing him back into the place where his story had begun.

Titan seemed to hate it too.

The moment we entered the old loading corridor, his breathing changed.

He sniffed the concrete.

His ears lowered.

Seven years earlier, he had been a frightened puppy somewhere in these rooms.

Now he was 130 pounds of muscle and memory.

But size did not erase what happened before.

I rested my hand on his neck.

"We're leaving again."

Roman heard me.

He looked away quickly.

The countdown reached seven minutes.

Gabriel tried his copied token at the server room.

Red light.

"It rejected the emulation."

Roman looked at Titan.

"No."

I turned toward him.

He shook his head.

"We don't use him unless there is no other option."

Gabriel stared at his brother.

Roman's voice hardened.

"You put that chip in him once because you were desperate."

"We're not doing it again just because a machine is counting down."

Gabriel's expression softened.

"I wasn't going to argue."

Roman looked almost surprised.

Gabriel pulled out his B token.

"There is another local override."

"Matteo's administrator credential."

"If he's inside, he has it."

A voice came through the server room speaker.

"Correct."

Matteo.

Roman's face became cold.

The speaker clicked again.

"You always were quick, Roman."

"Not quick enough."

Gabriel stepped toward the intercom.

"Open the door."

Silence.

Then Matteo laughed.

"You should have stayed dead."

Gabriel's face did not move.

"You should have checked."

A second voice came through the speaker.

Damian.

"This family reunion is touching."

Roman stepped closer.

"You kidnapped Titan and ran from a boardroom."

"You've had stronger mornings."

Damian laughed.

"And you've had worse dogs."

Titan growled at the speaker.

I crouched beside him.

"Easy."

The countdown showed five minutes.

Reeves's officers were trying to access the server room through a second corridor.

Matteo knew it.

"Sergeant," he said through the speaker.

"Before you break anything, you may want to know the room contains the only original archive connecting Roman Calder to twenty years of Red Harbor activity."

Reeves replied from farther down the hall.

"Then come out and help preserve it."

"I intend to preserve the company."

Roman laughed once.

"By erasing evidence."

"By erasing a disease."

"There are twenty thousand people whose jobs depend on Calder Group."

"There are pensions."

"Families."

"Ports."

"Hotels."

"Contracts across three countries."

"You think the public distinguishes between what your father did, what I did, and what you inherited?"

Roman's voice remained calm.

"They deserve the chance."

Matteo snapped,

"Spoken like a man who has never built anything."

Gabriel laughed bitterly.

"There he is."

"The real Matteo."

"You don't protect people."

"You hold them hostage to consequences you created."

The speaker clicked off.

Four minutes.

Then a side door opened thirty feet away.

Damian stepped into the corridor.

He held no visible weapon.

His suit was torn at the elbow.

His face was streaked with smoke from the tower.

In one hand he carried a small remote.

Three buttons.

My stomach dropped.

"Don't," I said.

Damian looked at Titan.

"Let's see what he learned."

Roman moved away from me immediately.

"Claire, take Titan back."

Damian pressed the first button.

Three descending notes echoed through hidden speakers.

Titan froze.

I felt his entire body tighten under my hand.

"Ash."

Damian pressed the second button.

A ventilation fan started.

Cedar flooded the corridor.

Roman ripped off his jacket and threw it aside.

Damian smiled.

"Too late."

The target compound was not on the jacket.

I smelled it from Roman's shirt.

Someone at the boardroom had transferred it to him.

Maybe Matteo's hand on a document.

Maybe the elevator rail.

Maybe a chair.

It did not matter now.

Titan turned toward Roman.

His lips pulled back.

Roman did not move.

The countdown showed three minutes.

Damian pressed the third button.

Titan screamed.

The receiver was gone.

But some other hidden speaker emitted a sound too high for me to hear clearly.

Titan heard it.

His body jerked.

"Ash, look at me."

He stared at Roman.

Damian pressed again.

Titan took one step forward.

Roman's face went pale.

He did not reach for a weapon.

He did not call a guard.

He looked at Titan.

Then he did the same thing he had done in my store.

He crouched.

No command.

No demand.

No attempt to control.

Just waiting.

I kept my hand open beside Titan's face.

"Your choice."

Damian's smile vanished.

He pressed the remote again.

Three notes.

High-frequency whine.

Cedar.

Every trigger they had built into the dog.

Titan trembled so hard his collar tags clicked.

Then he looked at me.

I whispered,

"Nobody gets to make you."

Titan turned back toward Roman.

He walked forward.

Damian smiled again.

Then Titan passed Roman.

He kept walking.

Straight toward Damian.

Damian backed up.

"Stop."

Titan continued.

Damian pressed the remote again.

Nothing changed.

Titan did not lunge at him.

He did not bite.

He simply walked forward until Damian had nowhere left to retreat without entering the open service alcove.

Then Titan sat down.

Between Damian and Roman.

A wall of black muscle.

A choice made visible.

Damian stared at him.

"You stupid animal."

Roman stood.

"That's the mistake all of you made."

Damian looked at him.

"You thought obedience was the same as loyalty."

Reeves appeared at the far end with two officers.

"Damian, put the remote down."

Damian glanced toward the server room.

Two minutes.

He threw the remote against the wall.

It shattered.

Then he ran.

Not toward the exit.

Toward the harbor access stairs.

Reeves's officers followed.

Roman started after them.

I caught his arm.

"Let them."

He stopped.

The server countdown reached ninety seconds.

Gabriel hit the intercom.

"Matteo."

No answer.

"You lose either way."

Silence.

"If the archive wipes, the copied drives survive."

"If it doesn't, the originals survive."

"Come out."

Matteo's voice returned.

"You always did think evidence was enough."

Gabriel's face hardened.

"It's enough to start."

"And Isabella?"

Roman froze.

Matteo continued.

"You want to know who killed her?"

Gabriel stared at the speaker.

"You did."

"No."

A pause.

"Damian did."

Footsteps stopped somewhere beyond the harbor stairwell.

Damian had heard the speaker too.

His voice echoed from the open passage.

"You lying bastard."

Matteo laughed.

"There he is."

Damian came back into view at the far end, fury replacing escape.

Reeves shouted at him to stop.

Damian ignored him.

"You ordered the car job."

Roman went still.

Gabriel looked toward Reeves.

Reeves touched the recorder on his vest.

Everything was being captured.

Matteo answered through the speaker.

"I ordered surveillance."

Damian shouted,

"You ordered me to make sure she never reached Gabriel."

"You said the family couldn't survive another witness."

Matteo's voice sharpened.

"And you chose the method."

Damian laughed wildly.

"There it is."

"Forty years of orders and suddenly you're only a concerned uncle."

Roman's face had become colorless.

Damian looked directly at him.

"He knew Isabella had the Pier Nineteen photograph."

"He knew she had found Gabriel."

"He told me to stop her before she reached you."

Gabriel closed his eyes.

Roman whispered,

"And you did."

Damian's anger faltered.

For the first time, something like shame crossed his face.

"I didn't know Titan was in the car."

My hand tightened on the leash.

Roman's voice became deadly quiet.

"That's the part you regret?"

Damian looked away.

Inside the server room, something clicked.

The countdown reached thirty seconds.

Gabriel slammed his palm against the intercom.

"Matteo, stop the purge."

No answer.

Twenty seconds.

Titan suddenly pulled toward the server door.

He sniffed the lower seam.

Then scratched once.

A small green light appeared beside the lock.

His chip had come within reader range.

Gabriel stared.

"The system sees A."

He pulled the B token from his neck and held it beside the reader.

Amber.

Then green.

The door unlocked.

Five seconds.

Gabriel rushed to the console.

The purge screen filled the monitor.

CANCEL AUTHORIZED.

He hit the command.

The countdown stopped at two seconds.

Matteo stood in the corner of the server room.

He had no cane now.

No frailty.

No smile.

Reeves entered behind us.

"Matteo Calder, do not move."

Matteo looked at Roman.

"You really want this public?"

Roman stood in the doorway with Titan between us.

"Yes."

"Your father's name will be destroyed."

"Then it was built on something that deserved to fall."

"Your brother will go to prison for what he did during Red Harbor."

Gabriel nodded.

"If that's where the evidence leads, I'll go."

Matteo looked almost offended.

"You'd sacrifice everything?"

Gabriel answered,

"No."

"I'd stop sacrificing everyone else."

Reeves stepped forward and handcuffed Matteo.

The old man looked at Titan one last time.

"All this because of a dog."

I looked down at Titan.

His ears lifted.

Roman answered before I could.

"No."

May you like

"All this because you thought nobody would listen to one."
