Chapter 17 - The Vote at Sunrise

Lucian looked worse under proper light.

One eye was swollen.

A cut split his lower lip.

His expensive shirt was torn at the shoulder.

But when Titan growled, Lucian did not look angry.

He looked ashamed.

Reeves had an officer cut the restraints and immediately replace them with handcuffs.

Lucian did not resist.

Roman stood across the room with Titan beside him.

For the first time since my store, the dog was touching Roman by choice.

Not much.

Just one shoulder against Roman's leg.

But Roman noticed every second of it.

"Talk," he said.

Lucian looked at Reeves.

"Am I under arrest?"

Reeves gave him a tired stare.

"You used an electronic device to cause pain to an animal in front of witnesses, fled a crime scene, and are connected to at least three people who are either dead, missing, or lying."

"What do you think?"

Lucian nodded once.

"Then I want a lawyer."

Roman's face went cold.

Lucian added,

"After I tell you what happens at seven thirty."

Reeves glanced at his watch.

It was 3:08 a.m.

"You have my attention."

Lucian leaned back against the chair.

"Damian called an emergency board session."

Roman's expression did not change.

"He doesn't have authority to call one alone."

"He has Matteo's proxy."

"Matteo is not a director."

"He became one yesterday."

Mason stared at him.

"That's impossible."

Lucian looked at Mason.

"Check the Swiss holding trust."

Mason pulled out his phone.

Roman's eyes stayed on Lucian.

"What did they file?"

"Temporary incapacity petition."

"Against me?"

"Against you as chief executive."

"Grounds?"

Lucian's mouth twisted.

"Instability."

"Undisclosed criminal exposure."

"Misuse of corporate security."

"And an animal incident they expected to happen Saturday."

I looked at Titan.

"The gala attack was supposed to prove Roman was reckless."

Lucian nodded.

"Partly."

"If Titan attacked Roman in a room full of cameras, Damian could frame it as a breakdown in private security caused by Roman's secret side operations."

Roman's voice sharpened.

"What secret side operations?"

Lucian looked at him.

"The ones Matteo has been running under your electronic signature for three years."

Roman went still.

Mason stopped typing.

"What?"

Lucian laughed bitterly.

"You thought the old man stayed relevant by calling board members from a clinic?"

"He built an entire shadow approval chain using legacy credentials from your father's office."

"Contracts."

"Security vendors."

"Off-book warehouse leases."

"Everything signed R. Calder."

Roman's face turned pale.

"My digital certificate is hardware protected."

"The current one is."

"The legacy certificate wasn't."

Gabriel stepped closer.

"Father kept old keys."

Roman looked at him.

"You knew?"

"I knew he kept archives."

"I didn't know Matteo had them."

Lucian continued.

"At seven thirty the board receives a packet linking Roman to Red Harbor accounts, unauthorized surveillance, and payments to shell security companies."

"At eight they vote to suspend him pending investigation."

"Matteo appears by video from Switzerland, frail and reluctant, and accepts temporary control for the good of the company."

Mason looked up from his phone.

"The meeting notice is real."

Roman's jaw tightened.

"Votes?"

"Damian has five."

"Matteo's trust controls three more."

"They only need two independents if Roman is forced to abstain."

Lucian nodded.

"They have them."

Roman looked at him.

"How do you know?"

Lucian stared at the floor.

"Because I helped get them."

Titan growled again.

Lucian closed his eyes.

"Yeah."

"I know."

Roman stepped forward.

"You spent nine years at my side."

"Yes."

"You sat at my table."

"Yes."

"You protected Isabella."

Lucian's face tightened.

"Not well enough."

"You stood beside me at her funeral."

"Yes."

"And you worked for Damian."

Lucian looked up.

"Not at first."

Roman's eyes were flat.

"That distinction matters only to you."

"Maybe."

Lucian leaned forward as far as the cuffs allowed.

"I joined your security office nine years ago because your father placed me there."

Roman's expression shifted.

"My father?"

"He wanted someone watching Matteo's people."

"After Gabriel disappeared, your father knew Matteo had gone beyond what he could control."

Gabriel gave a humorless laugh.

"Bit late for conscience."

Lucian looked at him.

"Your father thought you were dead by then."

Gabriel froze.

"What?"

Lucian continued.

"He ordered you hidden for forty-eight hours."

"Matteo changed the transfer."

"Your father believed you escaped during the move."

Gabriel's face drained of color.

"That's a lie."

"Maybe."

"But it's what I was told."

Roman looked between them.

"Father thought Gabriel was alive after the funeral?"

Lucian nodded.

"For two days."

"Then Matteo showed him photographs of a burned vehicle and told him Gabriel died trying to run."

Gabriel stared at him.

"I was in a locked room under Harrow Kennels for nine days."

Lucian shrugged painfully.

"Then Matteo lied to everyone."

The pattern made terrible sense.

Roman's father had staged a death to silence a scandal without necessarily intending permanent murder.

Matteo had used the disappearance to seize something bigger.

Then he convinced both sides the other was gone.

Roman looked at Gabriel.

"If Father thought you died after the staged funeral, that explains why he stopped looking."

Gabriel's eyes hardened.

"It doesn't excuse the staged funeral."

"I didn't say it did."

For the first time, the brothers agreed without anger.

Reeves looked at Lucian.

"How did you go from your father's internal spy to shocking a dog for Damian?"

Lucian's face became hollow.

"Slowly."

"That's how people like Matteo do it."

"One compromise that sounds temporary."

"One report you don't file."

"One payment you don't ask about."

"One favor because someone has photographs of your kid."

Harker's daughter again.

I looked at Lucian.

"Who did they threaten for you?"

His jaw tightened.

"My daughter."

Roman's face changed.

I had not known Lucian had a child.

Apparently neither had Roman.

"You told me you had no family."

"That kept her safer."

"Did it?"

Lucian looked away.

"No."

"Damian found her last year."

"He showed me photographs from outside her apartment in Montreal."

"After that, every order came with proof that someone was watching her."

Roman said nothing.

Lucian looked at Titan.

"The dog was where I broke."

My anger returned.

"You still did it."

"Yes."

"You don't get credit for feeling bad."

"I know."

"You pressed that remote in my store."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Lucian met my eyes.

"Because Roman needed to see the receiver work."

"You could have told him."

"The microphone was live."

"Anything I said in the store went straight to Damian's channel."

"If I told Roman openly, Damian would know I had flipped before I could get away."

"So you hurt Titan."

"Once."

My voice sharpened.

"That is not a defense."

"It isn't."

Lucian swallowed.

"I told myself one shock in front of Roman was better than what they planned Saturday."

"I told myself Roman would take the harness apart."

"I told myself Titan would forgive me if he lived."

He looked at the dog.

"That last part was arrogance."

Titan stared back without moving.

Roman's voice was low.

"Why did you say ask your brother?"

Lucian looked at Gabriel.

"Because two nights ago I found a Red Harbor archive with Gabriel's name."

"I didn't know he was alive."

"I only knew Damian and Matteo were terrified of something he left behind."

"I thought if Roman heard Gabriel's name while looking at that receiver, he might start digging outside the channels they controlled."

"Then the lights went out."

"Was that you?" I asked.

"No."

"The driver in the gray sedan triggered it."

Roman's eyes narrowed.

"Matteo?"

Lucian shook his head.

"I never saw the driver clearly."

"I assumed Damian."

"Claire's camera says Matteo," Mason said.

Lucian's face changed.

"Then he came back himself."

"Meaning?"

"Matteo doesn't come near operations anymore."

"If he was outside Claire's store, he believed Titan getting to her could destroy him."

I looked at Gabriel.

"Because Isabella left the trail through me."

Gabriel nodded.

Lucian continued.

"After I escaped the store, I called Harker."

"Then Damian's men grabbed me near the garage."

"They wanted to know what Roman had seen."

"I lied."

"They didn't believe me."

He looked down at his injuries.

"Eventually they decided I was more useful as bait."

Roman's expression did not soften.

But it changed.

Betrayal was becoming complicated.

That did not make it smaller.

It made it harder to put somewhere.

Mason stepped toward Roman.

"We can stop the board packet."

Roman looked at him.

"No."

"Sir?"

"Let them send it."

Mason stared.

"They will freeze your authority before breakfast."

"If we block it, Matteo knows we understand the full plan."

"He already knows enough."

"Not Gabriel."

Roman looked at his brother.

"He doesn't know Gabriel is with us."

Gabriel nodded slowly.

"Damian knows you found me."

"Damian knows."

Roman's eyes hardened.

"Matteo may not."

Lucian looked between them.

"Damian and Matteo don't trust each other anymore."

Roman turned.

"How do you know?"

"Because Damian started copying Red Harbor files behind Matteo's back."

"He planned to take the company and cut Matteo out after the vote."

Gabriel laughed bitterly.

"Family tradition."

Roman ignored him.

"So Damian may not have told Matteo I'm with Gabriel."

"Correct."

"Then we keep it that way."

Reeves frowned.

"You are not using an active criminal investigation as corporate theater."

Roman looked at him.

"I'm using a corporate meeting to put Matteo Calder in a room where he believes he has already won."

"Then you can arrest him."

Reeves considered it.

"If I have probable cause."

Gabriel pointed toward the hard drives.

"You will."

"Once Titan's token decrypts the archive."

We all looked at the dog.

Titan sat beside Roman, tired and watchful.

I stepped forward.

"No."

Roman looked at me.

"We need the chip."

"You need the identifier."

"You do not need to drag him through another server room tonight if there's another way."

Gabriel thought.

"There might be."

"The chip is passive."

"If we read its challenge response with an authorized scanner, I can emulate the token long enough to open the archive."

Reeves pointed at him.

"You are going to say that again in language I can put in a report."

Gabriel sighed.

"We scan Titan once."

"He doesn't go anywhere."

"The computer uses that scan to unlock the files."

"Better," Reeves said.

I looked at Roman.

"One scan."

He nodded.

"One."

We returned to Calder House before dawn.

Mara was waiting in the kitchen with her wrist wrapped and fury in her eyes.

The moment Titan entered, she dropped to her knees.

He nearly knocked her over.

She hugged him around the neck.

"You enormous idiot."

Titan licked her chin.

Mara began crying.

Roman turned away to give her privacy.

I saw his eyes were wet too.

Nobody mentioned it.

Gabriel stood in the kitchen doorway.

Mara looked up.

Everything in her face stopped.

"Gabriel."

He removed the wool cap.

"Hi, Mara."

She slapped him.

The sound cracked through the kitchen.

Mason stared at the floor.

Roman stared at the ceiling.

I bit the inside of my cheek.

Gabriel touched his face.

"I probably deserved that."

Mara hit him again.

"That one too."

Then she pulled him into her arms and sobbed against his shoulder.

Gabriel closed his eyes.

For the first time, he looked less like a fugitive and more like someone who had finally come home.

We gave Titan water, food, and silence.

Then a police veterinary specialist scanned the secondary chip without removing it.

Gabriel connected the readout to an isolated computer.

The first hard drive unlocked at 5:14 a.m.

Folders appeared.

RED HARBOR.

PIER 19.

VALE, ISABELLA.

CALDER, ROMAN.

CALDER, MATTEO.

CALDER, DAMIAN.

The room went silent.

Gabriel opened Isabella's folder.

A video file sat at the top.

Date: the night she died.

Roman stopped him.

"Not yet."

Gabriel looked at him.

Roman's face had gone pale.

"I need to see it."

"Just not in front of everyone."

Gabriel nodded.

He moved to another folder.

MATTEO.

Hundreds of documents appeared.

Wire transfers.

Internal messages.

Flight logs.

Photographs.

Then Mason opened a recent file.

His face changed.

"Roman."

He turned the screen.

A board resolution filled it.

Prepared two weeks earlier.

The signature lines were already completed by nine directors.

The vote had been decided before the meeting was called.

At the bottom was a second document.

It authorized transfer of control over Calder Group's security division to Matteo immediately upon Roman's suspension.

Attached was a list of names to be detained for internal investigation.

Roman.

Mason.

Mara.

Sergeant Reeves.

Gabriel, if located.

And me.

My name was last.

CLAIRE BENNETT - SECURE BEFORE PUBLIC CONTACT.

Roman read it.

Then his phone chimed with the official board notice.

The emergency meeting had been moved forward.

Not seven thirty.

Six fifteen.

Forty-one minutes away.

At the bottom of the notice was one final line.

May you like

MATTEO CALDER WILL ATTEND IN PERSON.
