Chapter 18 - CLAIRE'S LAST RECORDING

Alexander escaped through the tidal tunnel.

Grant's teams found his blood on a rusted ladder and nothing else.

Gabriel wanted pursuit.

Grant wanted Eli evacuated first.

This time Gabriel chose Eli.

The choice cost Alexander a forty-minute lead.

It may have saved the boy's life.

Dr. Shah met them at a secure hospital outside Boston.

She examined Eli for hours.

No surgery had begun.

No experimental drug had entered his system.

The relief in the room was almost unbearable.

"He is medically stable."

Shah looked directly at Gabriel.

"He is also exhausted."

"He wants answers."

"He needs sleep."

"I can hear you."

Eli's voice came from the bed.

Shah smiled.

"Good."

"Then hear this too."

She pointed at him.

"Sleep."

Eli looked at Gabriel.

"I like her."

Gabriel almost laughed.

"Of course you do."

Hannah sat beside the window while Eli slept.

For the first time in nearly forty-eight hours, no alarm was sounding.

No one was chasing them.

No new message had arrived.

That lasted twenty-three minutes.

Grant entered with a sealed evidence bag.

Inside was a voice recorder recovered from the red box.

"Lab cleared it."

"No tampering."

Gabriel looked at it.

"We already heard one file."

"There are seven."

Grant's expression was serious.

"The last one was recorded the morning Claire died."

Gabriel's hand stopped.

He looked at Eli.

"Not here."

They moved to a private conference room.

Hannah came with him.

Gabriel did not object.

Grant pressed play.

Claire's voice filled the room.

She sounded breathless.

"It's Thursday, 7:06 A.M."

"Gabriel got delayed by a call."

"I think the call was deliberate."

Gabriel's skin went cold.

He remembered it.

A union problem at Pier Four.

Sebastian had called.

But Sebastian later claimed the dispatcher initiated it.

Claire continued.

"I told Eli storm warning."

"He looked confused."

"I should take him back inside."

A pause.

"But if I'm wrong, I will have terrified him for nothing again."

Hannah closed her eyes.

The tragedy lived inside that hesitation.

A mother trying not to infect her child with fear.

"Isabelle called last night."

"She admitted giving Daniel the route."

"She says Daniel works for Alexander."

"I no longer think that's true."

Gabriel leaned forward.

"Daniel is using Alexander's name because everyone inside the old network fears it."

Grant nodded slightly.

That matched Keane's confession.

Claire continued.

"Sebastian is hiding something too."

"I believe someone copied his credentials and he is ashamed he didn't notice."

"He lies when ashamed."

Gabriel almost smiled despite himself.

Claire knew Sebastian perfectly.

"Mercer is worse."

"I found payments."

"He has been sharing medical information about Eli for years."

Then Claire's voice changed.

"But there is one thing I haven't told anyone."

Gabriel stopped breathing.

"Eli saw Daniel Keane in the garage two weeks ago."

Hannah stared at Grant.

Not Sebastian.

Keane.

"He was wearing a red ring."

Gabriel looked at the counterfeit ring.

Alexander's initials.

The ring had belonged to Keane.

Or had been planted for Keane to wear.

"I asked Daniel about it."

"He said it belonged to a client."

"I pretended to believe him."

Paper rustled.

"The ring has A.R. engraved inside."

"Not A.V."

Gabriel frowned.

Claire continued.

"Alexander Rourke."

Sebastian's unknown biological father.

Hannah whispered.

"So Alexander Vale and Alexander Rourke may be the same man after all."

Grant nodded.

Claire's recording confirmed it.

"I found an old birth certificate."

"Alexander Rourke changed his name to Alexander Vale before Gabriel met him."

"He is Sebastian's father."

Gabriel closed his eyes.

The ring was real.

But the wearer had been Keane.

Eli had remembered the ring correctly and attached it to the wrong adult months later after seeing Sebastian wear a similar one.

A memory both true and incomplete.

Claire continued.

"I think Daniel wants Gabriel to suspect Sebastian if anything happens."

"And I think Alexander wants Daniel stopped, but he cannot expose him without exposing himself."

Grant exhaled.

Everyone had been trapped by their own secrets.

Then Claire said the sentence that changed everything again.

"I met Alexander yesterday."

Gabriel's jaw tightened.

"He told me Daniel has been building a separate network inside Gabriel's companies."

"I believed half of what he said."

"I still do."

A small sound came through the recording.

A garage door opening.

Claire's voice dropped.

"Someone is here."

Footsteps.

Then Isabelle's voice.

"Claire?"

A pause.

"What are you doing here?"

Claire sounded tense.

Isabelle answered.

"I came to stop you from taking the SUV."

Gabriel stared at the recorder.

The public story had never included Isabelle at the mansion that morning.

Gabriel remembered why.

He had been the one who removed her from it.

Not literally.

On the second day after the bombing, investigators asked for a list of everyone who had been at the estate before the SUV left.

Gabriel gave them the staff roster, Sebastian, Mercer by phone, and the driver who was scheduled but never used.

He did not mention Isabelle.

She had told him she arrived after Claire departed.

Gabriel accepted it.

She was his sister.

That had been enough.

Now he sat in the dark conference room and realized he had contaminated the investigation before grief even became a funeral.

"I left her out."

Hannah looked at him.

"What?"

"The first witness list."

Grant stopped the recording.

"Explain."

Gabriel did.

Grant's expression became hard.

"You withheld a witness from a bombing investigation."

"I believed she wasn't there."

"You believed your sister."

"Yes."

"Without checking."

Gabriel looked at him.

"Yes."

Grant rubbed his jaw.

"Do you understand how many times this case has been damaged because people around you decided family loyalty mattered more than clean evidence?"

Gabriel could have answered defensively.

He didn't.

"Yes."

Hannah glanced at him.

The answer sounded different now.

Grant restarted the recording.

Isabelle's voice trembled.

"Daniel called me."

"He said something changed."

Then the recording continued into details none of them had heard before because the original copy in the red box had a second file immediately afterward.

Claire had restarted the recorder from her coat pocket.

The sound was muffled.

Isabelle spoke rapidly.

"He said I should leave Boston for a few days."

Claire asked why.

"He wouldn't say."

"Then why are you here?"

"Because I think it has something to do with Eli."

Gabriel stared at the speaker.

Isabelle had come to warn Claire.

Too late.

Partially.

Terrified of admitting her own involvement.

But she had come.

Claire's voice hardened.

"Tell me everything."

Isabelle began with the money.

Two years earlier she had invested in a medical technology fund recommended by Daniel Keane.

The fund was fraudulent.

When it collapsed, documents appeared showing Isabelle had signed guarantees worth twelve million dollars.

She insisted the signatures were not hers.

Keane told her he could make the debt disappear.

In exchange, he asked for harmless information.

Travel dates.

Board schedules.

Names of people attending charity dinners.

Later he asked which vehicle Claire used for school drop-off.

Isabelle asked why.

He said an insurance investigator needed a movement pattern for a threat assessment.

Claire's voice became furious.

"And you didn't ask Gabriel?"

Isabelle laughed through tears.

"Ask Gabriel what?"

"Whether his terrifying life had finally swallowed mine too?"

Claire said nothing.

Isabelle continued.

"You know what he's like."

"If I told him I lost twelve million dollars and someone was blackmailing me, there would be bodies before dinner."

Gabriel looked down.

Again, fear of his reaction had driven someone he loved deeper into secrecy.

That did not excuse Isabelle.

It explained the route by which Keane controlled her.

Claire asked one question.

"What did Daniel threaten to release?"

Isabelle became quiet.

"Documents making it look like I stole from the foundation."

Hannah exhaled.

That explained Claire's missing charitable money.

Keane had created false theft around Isabelle, then offered to hide the crime he invented.

Control through manufactured guilt.

The same architecture he later used on Gabriel.

Claire asked.

"Did you steal anything?"

"No."

"Did you move any money?"

A pause.

"Once."

Claire swore softly.

Isabelle began crying harder.

"He told me it would prove cooperation and then he'd erase everything."

"How much?"

"Three hundred thousand."

Gabriel closed his eyes.

Isabelle was both victim and participant.

That was harder to process than innocence or betrayal.

Claire's next words were calm.

"You are going to tell Gabriel."

"No."

"Yes."

"Claire, he will destroy me."

"No."

Claire's voice softened.

"He will scare you."

"He will yell."

"He may break furniture because apparently we married a Victorian dock animal."

Hannah laughed despite herself.

Gabriel looked offended.

Grant almost smiled.

Claire continued.

"But he will not destroy you."

Isabelle whispered.

"You don't know that."

Claire answered.

"I know him better than he knows himself."

The sentence landed hard.

Then a car door slammed outside on the recording.

Claire moved toward the garage.

The audio became chaotic.

Owen called that the SUV was ready.

Eli asked where his backpack was.

Isabelle said Claire's name twice.

Then Claire whispered the phrase they had already recovered.

"If Isabelle is warning me, Daniel changed the plan."

Another sound followed.

A faint electronic chirp.

Grant stopped the recording.

"What is that?"

Gabriel knew.

"Vehicle remote unlock."

Grant replayed it.

The chirp sounded before Owen announced the SUV was ready.

Someone else had unlocked the vehicle first.

Gabriel searched his memory.

The black SUV used an encrypted proximity key.

Only three copies existed.

Gabriel had one.

Claire had one.

The security office held the third in a biometric safe.

On the morning of the bombing, Gabriel's key had been in his bedroom.

Claire's was in her purse.

That left the security copy.

Owen controlled the office.

But the command file later proved Keane directed him.

A tiny sound on a dead woman's recorder finally linked Owen to the vehicle before Claire approached it.

Grant leaned back.

"This helps."

Gabriel looked at him.

"It should have helped eleven months ago."

"We didn't have it eleven months ago."

"Because I sealed her room."

Grant did not answer.

Gabriel did.

"Because I couldn't stand hearing her voice."

Hannah looked at him.

That admission was not about evidence.

It was about grief becoming obstruction.

Claire had left clues all over their life.

Gabriel had preserved the rooms and buried the woman inside them.

Only now were they finally listening.

The public story had never included Isabelle at the mansion that morning.

Claire spoke.

"Why?"

"Daniel called me."

"He said something changed."

"He said don't use the black car."

Claire's breathing quickened.

"Why would he warn you?"

Isabelle began crying.

"I don't know."

"Yes, you do."

"Claire, please."

Then a third voice entered.

Male.

Distant.

"Mrs. Marlowe?"

Gabriel leaned toward the speaker.

He knew the voice.

Owen Price.

The security supervisor later killed near the boat house.

"Car is ready."

Claire whispered something too soft to hear.

The recorder shifted.

Then the file ended.

Gabriel stared at Grant.

"Owen knew."

"Maybe."

"He was there before the bomb."

"Yes."

Hannah thought of Owen kidnapping Eli, then being killed.

"Maybe he wasn't working for Keane willingly."

Grant nodded.

"Maybe he was cleaning up the same mistake for eleven months."

Gabriel replayed the final thirty seconds.

Claire had whispered something before stopping the recorder.

Grant enhanced the audio.

The words emerged.

"If Isabelle is warning me, Daniel changed the plan."

Then one final sentence.

"I think the bomb is already here."

Gabriel covered his face.

Claire knew.

Seconds before entering the SUV, she knew enough to be afraid.

Why did she still get in?

Hannah answered without being asked.

"Eli."

Gabriel looked at her.

"He was already in the car."

The truth was simple.

Claire had not chosen the vehicle.

She had seen Eli inside and gone toward him.

The mother who had planned an escape for months had abandoned her own safety in one instant because her son was already in danger.

Gabriel lowered his hands.

Tears stood in his eyes.

He did not hide them.

Grant gave him a minute.

Then his phone rang.

The agent stepped away.

When he returned, his expression was grim.

"Alexander has contacted us."

Gabriel's grief hardened.

"Where?"

"He wants immunity."

"For what?"

"Everything."

Gabriel laughed without humor.

"And in exchange?"

Grant looked at him.

"He says he can give us the original command file Daniel Keane used to authorize the bombing."

"Then take it."

"There is a condition."

Gabriel already hated it.

"What?"

"Alexander will only give it directly to Sebastian."

Gabriel went still.

"Why?"

Grant's answer was quiet.

May you like

"Because he says Sebastian is his son."
