Chapter 14 - PIER NINE

Agent Grant insisted on surveillance.

Gabriel insisted Grant stay invisible.

Neither trusted the other.

That was becoming normal.

At ten forty-five, Gabriel entered Pier Nine alone.

At least that was what Alexander was supposed to believe.

Hannah waited in a utility van two blocks away with Grant.

Sebastian remained at the mansion with Eli.

Gabriel had argued against it.

Eli had chosen Sebastian himself.

"If he wanted me gone, he already had chances."

The logic was uncomfortable.

Gabriel allowed it.

His yacht was tied at the end of the pier.

No crew lights.

No movement.

Alexander stood on the aft deck in a charcoal coat.

Time had narrowed his face but not weakened him.

He held himself like a man who had spent years entering rooms where no one could admit knowing his name.

"Gabriel."

His voice was almost warm.

Gabriel stepped aboard.

"Alexander."

The older man smiled.

"You remembered."

"I remember debts."

"You always did."

Gabriel looked around.

"Where is Mercer?"

Alexander's expression barely moved.

"Direct."

"Where is he?"

"Not here."

"Rebecca?"

"Not here either."

"Daniel Keane?"

Alexander smiled faintly.

"Still asking about pieces instead of the board."

Gabriel stepped closer.

"My wife is dead."

The smile disappeared.

"Yes."

"Did you kill her?"

Alexander looked toward the black water.

"No."

Gabriel watched every muscle in his face.

"Did you order the bomb?"

"No."

"Did you know it was going to happen?"

Alexander paused.

There.

Gabriel felt it.

"Yes."

The word was quiet.

Gabriel's hands closed.

"And you did nothing."

"I tried."

"Claire is dead."

"I know."

"Then you failed."

Alexander met his eyes.

"We both did."

Gabriel moved so fast Alexander barely shifted before Gabriel seized his coat.

"Do not put her death on me."

Alexander did not resist.

"Why not?"

Gabriel's face went cold.

"Because you knew what your world was."

Alexander's voice remained calm.

"You let Claire live inside it and convinced yourself walls were enough."

Gabriel shoved him backward.

"Who planted the bomb?"

Alexander straightened his coat.

"Open the last door."

He pointed below deck.

Gabriel did not move.

"You came here for answers."

"I came here for you."

"No."

Alexander smiled sadly.

"You came because Claire left something you need."

Gabriel descended.

The master cabin looked untouched.

Alexander followed.

"Your wife was smarter than all of us."

Gabriel looked at him.

"Do not compliment her."

"Why?"

"You don't get to."

Alexander accepted that.

The tiny metal key from the sailboat fit a lock beneath Claire's old vanity.

Gabriel had never noticed it.

A panel released.

Behind it was a red steel box.

The red room.

Not a room at all.

A box.

Gabriel placed it on the bed.

"Claire liked layers."

Alexander sounded almost amused.

Gabriel ignored him.

The box contained three things.

A paper ledger.

A voice recorder.

And a sealed envelope marked FOR GABRIEL ONLY.

Gabriel reached for the recorder first.

Alexander stopped him.

"The letter."

Gabriel's eyes sharpened.

"You know what's in it."

"No."

"Then why?"

"Because Claire knew you."

Alexander looked at the recorder.

"If you hear evidence before truth, you'll turn truth into evidence."

Gabriel hated the sentence because it sounded plausible.

He opened the letter.

Gabriel, if Hannah got you this far, then at least one thing went right.

He stopped.

Claire had expected Hannah and Gabriel to work together.

He continued.

I need you to understand something before you listen to anything else.

The person who betrayed us is not the person you will want it to be.

Gabriel glanced at Alexander.

The older man remained still.

Claire's letter continued.

Sebastian is guilty of lying to you.

Mercer is guilty of hurting Eli.

Alexander is guilty of building a machine around your life and calling it protection.

But none of them planted the bomb.

Gabriel read the sentence twice.

His pulse slowed in a dangerous way.

The next line made him sit down.

The person who arranged the bombing was someone I trusted enough to bring into our home, someone who knew our schedules, someone who knew which vehicle I would take, and someone who knew exactly how you would react after I died.

Gabriel looked at Alexander.

"Who?"

Alexander shook his head.

"Read."

Gabriel continued.

I have proof, but I am ashamed to tell you I ignored the first warning because I loved this person too.

There was only one person Claire loved like family who had not yet appeared in their investigation.

Gabriel's sister.

Isabelle Marlowe.

Gabriel's hand stopped.

Hannah's voice came through the tiny receiver hidden in his collar.

"Gabriel?"

He did not respond.

Claire's letter continued.

Isabelle came to me six months ago asking for help.

She owed money.

Not gambling money.

Not personal debt.

Money connected to Alexander's network.

She said she had been forced to move information through the Marlowe Foundation.

I believed she was a victim.

I helped her.

Then I discovered she had been selling our schedules for years.

Gabriel stood so violently the red box fell sideways.

"No."

Alexander watched him.

"No."

Gabriel's voice cracked with rage.

Isabelle was seven years younger than him.

He had practically raised her after their father disappeared.

Claire had stood beside Isabelle at her wedding.

Eli called her Aunt Izzy.

She had visited the hospital every day after the bombing.

She had cooked meals Gabriel did not eat.

She had sat beside Eli for hours while he slept.

Claire's handwriting waited.

Gabriel forced himself to continue.

I don't know whether Isabelle understands how far this has gone.

I don't know whether she knows Mercer is involved.

But she gave someone the Thursday route.

I heard her admit it.

The recorder contains that conversation.

Gabriel stared at the device.

Alexander spoke softly.

"Now you understand why I wanted you here."

Gabriel looked at him.

"You knew."

"Not until after Claire died."

"You protected her."

Alexander shook his head.

"I protected my operation."

"Same result."

Gabriel pressed play.

Claire's voice.

Then Isabelle's.

"I only gave them the route."

Claire sounded furious.

"Why?"

Isabelle was crying.

"They said they wanted Gabriel frightened."

"You gave them Eli's school route."

"They promised nobody would get hurt."

Claire's voice broke.

"You believed that?"

"I didn't know about a bomb."

Gabriel could not breathe.

Isabelle continued.

"Claire, please."

"Who did you give it to?"

A pause.

"Daniel."

Gabriel's eyes widened.

Daniel Keane.

His attorney.

Alive.

"Daniel said it was leverage."

Claire's voice sharpened.

"For who?"

"I don't know."

"You're lying."

Then Isabelle whispered a name.

"Alexander."

The recording stopped.

Gabriel looked at the older man across from him.

Alexander's face had become stone.

"She lied."

Gabriel laughed once.

"Convenient."

"I never dealt with Isabelle."

"Claire's dead."

"Yes."

"Keane disappeared."

"Yes."

"And the only living man in this room says the dead woman was mistaken."

Alexander stepped forward.

"That is why you need the ledger."

Gabriel opened it.

Handwritten payments.

Dates.

Codes.

Names.

One column listed intermediaries.

Daniel Keane appeared repeatedly.

Isabelle Marlowe appeared twice.

But the authorizing code beside the bombing week was not Alexander's.

It was S.R.

Sebastian Rourke.

Gabriel's blood went cold.

"No."

Alexander looked at the ledger.

"Now you see the problem."

Every path pointed somewhere different.

Sebastian.

Isabelle.

Keane.

Mercer.

Alexander.

A network designed so every truth implicated another liar.

Then Hannah's voice exploded through Gabriel's receiver.

"Gabriel, get off the boat."

Gunfire sounded faintly through her channel.

Grant shouted in the background.

"MOVE!"

Gabriel turned.

Outside, engines roared toward the pier.

Alexander's face changed for the first time.

Real fear.

"They found us."

Gabriel stared at him.

"Who?"

Alexander looked toward the deck.

May you like

"Daniel Keane."
