Chapter 16 - THE CONTINGENCY

The directory contained a plan written years earlier to discredit any surviving witness who tried to reopen Iron Lantern.

Its language was clinical enough to feel more brutal than a threat shouted in anger.

The author recommended attacking credibility, exploiting old medical records, and provoking public confrontations that could be presented as evidence of instability.

My recent assault had been anticipated in broad outline but not scripted in every detail.

Meridian's agents had planted lies where Travis was already inclined to believe them.

He supplied the violence himself.

One document named Richard Vale as the person who approved the strategy.

Another contained a list of vulnerable witnesses and their families.

Walter and Peter were on it.

So were Nora Pike, Lena Ward, and Owen Reed.

I sat with that list longer than I intended.

Those names were not military objectives or bargaining positions.

They were people who'd chosen to tell the truth.

Vega coordinated protective measures, and investigators sought arrest warrants supported by the expanding records.

Vale's attorneys insisted the documents were fabricated.

Their certainty began to unravel when Clara identified the original hardware and described exactly how she'd made the backup.

Daniel volunteered the access codes for the recovered files and surrendered all remaining related papers.

An investigator asked why he hadn't done so years earlier.

“I was afraid to lose everything I'd built,” he said.

“And what did you lose by keeping quiet?”

Daniel looked toward the room where Walter sat beside Peter.

“More than I had the courage to count.”

That evening reporters uncovered the old false casualty letter and began asking whether my entire service record had been invented.

My Navy records were reviewed and officially authenticated, but the rumors spread faster than corrections.

I wanted to disappear again.

Walter found me sitting alone beneath the memorial photograph, now restored behind new glass.

“People can't bear a story where the truth takes seventeen years,” he said.

“They want one villain and one clean victory.”

“We aren't going to give them that,” I answered.

“Good.”

He smiled tiredly.

“Because Peter has been asking about the other people in that helicopter.”

I realized he meant the people whose names had not yet appeared on any list.

Clara's files mentioned another survivor moved through Station Nine, identified only as WITNESS ZERO.

When Vega decrypted the folder, a photograph appeared on the screen.

I recognized the face immediately.

It belonged to the civilian who had aimed his weapon at the wounded Marines in Afghanistan.

And the latest image had been taken just three days earlier, outside my house.
