The Shadow Beneath Her Skin

CHAPTER 1 — The First Truth

The hospital room was too quiet.

The monitors kept beeping softly, but no one moved for a moment after the doctor spoke.

“We need more scans… immediately.”

The pregnant woman lay still, one hand pressed over her belly. Her breathing was shallow, uneven. Her husband stood frozen beside her, eyes locked on her abdomen like it might move again.

Then it did.

A faint ripple—like something sliding just under the skin.

The doctor immediately stepped forward.

“Did you feel that?” he asked, voice tight but controlled.

The woman shook her head slowly. “It… moved on its own.”

The ultrasound machine was repositioned. The screen flickered again—but this time, the image was distorted. Not just unclear… wrong.

The doctor frowned.

“That’s not fetal movement.”

The husband took a step back.

“What do you mean it’s not—”

A sudden spike on the monitor cut him off. A sharp, irregular signal.

The doctor stopped speaking entirely.

For the first time, his calm mask broke.
