CHAPTER 3 — THE PRICE OF SILENCE

A giant screen descended behind the altar.
Andrew felt his stomach tighten.
"Clara..."
"What are you doing?"
She never looked at him.
"I asked every guest to remain until the end of the ceremony."
"Not because of the wedding."
"Because of the truth."
The screen came alive.
Hidden security footage appeared.
Patricia insulting waiters.
Humiliating staff.
Threatening vendors.
Demanding that Clara's parents be seated in the back because they "looked poor."
Every cruel word echoed through the ballroom.
Guests exchanged horrified glances.
Business partners quietly stepped away from the Whitlock family.
Several investors pulled out their phones.
One after another...
Meetings were canceled.
Contracts disappeared.
Sponsors withdrew.
Andrew buried his face in his hands.
"You recorded all of this?"
"No."
Clara answered softly.
"The estate's security system did."
She turned toward Andrew.
"I wasn't testing your mother."
"I was testing you."
"You watched everything happen."
"You watched her destroy the dress I made with my own hands."
"And you chose silence."
Tears filled Andrew's eyes.
"I was trying to protect my family."
Clara gave a faint smile.
"A real husband protects the family he chooses."
"You chose your mother."
"So I chose myself."
She removed her engagement ring.
Placed it gently on the altar.
"The wedding is over."
