Chapter 1: The Wedding That Never Happened

Chapter 1: The Wedding That Never Happened

The silence lasted nearly ten seconds.

No one dared breathe.

Patricia stared at the ownership certificate as though refusing to believe what her eyes were seeing.

"This is forged," she whispered.

"It has to be."

The venue manager calmly slid another document from the portfolio.

"The transfer was completed eight months ago, Mrs. Whitlock."

His voice never rose.

"It was personally registered by Miss Clara Mason after inheriting the Mason Hospitality Group."

Another wave of murmurs swept across the ballroom.

Andrew blinked.

"Mason..."

His mind raced backward.

The countless evenings Clara had excused herself for board meetings.

The business calls she always answered outside.

The weekends she claimed she had to inspect "family property."

He had never cared enough to ask.

He had simply assumed she was helping manage a small event company.

Because that version of Clara had been easier to believe.

Patricia shook her head violently.

"No."

"This venue belongs to the Whitlock family."

The manager looked directly at her.

"It never did."

"The Whitlocks leased this ballroom every year for their charitable gala."

He paused.

"They were never the owners."

Gasps echoed through the hall.

Several longtime guests exchanged embarrassed looks.

They suddenly remembered.

Every invitation had always listed the venue as property of Mason Estates.

They had simply assumed the names were connected.

Andrew slowly turned toward Clara.

"You knew..."

"You knew my family believed this place belonged to us."

Clara nodded.

"I did."

"Then why didn't you tell me?"

A faint smile appeared.

Because the answer hurt more than anger ever could.

"I was waiting for the man I loved to ask."

"You never did."

Andrew lowered his eyes.

For the first time in years...

He understood exactly how little he had ever tried to know the woman standing before him.

Clara reached for the bouquet still resting beside the altar.

She gently laid it on one of the empty chairs.

"I won't be getting married today."

The sentence landed heavier than any scream.

She slipped the engagement ring from her finger.

Walked toward Andrew.

Placed it carefully into his trembling hand.

"I can't marry someone who stands beside the person hurting me... instead of beside me."

May you like

Without another word...

She turned away.
