CHAPTER 3 — The Groom Finally Saw the Truth

Nathan felt the world collapsing around him.

He looked at Claire.

Then at the wine stain covering her wedding gown.

Only now did he realize she had never defended herself because she never needed to.

She had been waiting for the truth.

"I didn't know," Nathan said quietly.

"I'm so sorry."

Claire smiled sadly.

"I believe you."

"But believing you doesn't change what happened."

She turned toward the wedding guests.

"My husband asked me to apologize."

The room became painfully silent.

"So today..."

"I'll apologize."

She faced the children from St. Mary's Orphanage, who had just entered the ballroom with their elderly director after being invited by the hotel manager.

"I'm sorry."

"I'm sorry adults like us failed you."

Tears filled many of the guests' eyes.

Nathan dropped to one knee.

Not to propose.

To beg.

"Please..."

"Give me another chance."

Claire gently shook her head.

"The man I wanted to marry would have stood beside me before he knew I owned this hotel."

"You only found your courage after discovering my name on the deed."

Nathan lowered his head.

He had no answer.
