Chapter 8 - THE WOMAN BEHIND VANESSA

Samuel remained unconscious through the night.

Rose refused to leave the hospital.

Emily stayed because she still needed answers.

Daniel stayed because someone had tried to kill or silence a witness connected to his family.

Margaret returned to the mansion under heavy security.

Celeste Vale disappeared.

Her driver claimed she asked to be taken to Manhattan.

Her phone was turned off.

Vanessa was released pending investigation.

Her attorneys argued she had no intention of permanently depriving the family of the necklace because it already belonged to the Ashbournes.

Daniel called the argument absurd.

Mia called it legally annoying.

Emily called it exactly what Vanessa wanted.

Delay.

Everything came back to September 18.

Ten days remained.

At three in the morning, Samuel opened his eyes.

A nurse allowed one visitor.

Emily went in.

Samuel looked older than he had twelve hours earlier.

“Emily.”

“You staged one kidnapping.”

“Tell me this wasn’t another.”

He almost smiled.

“No.”

“What happened?”

“Ryan.”

Her stomach tightened.

“Owen’s son?”

Samuel nodded weakly.

“He realized I was playing both sides.”

“Where?”

“Parking garage.”

“He injected me.”

“Did Vanessa order it?”

“I don’t know.”

Emily sat.

“Who brought Rose back?”

“I did.”

She watched his face.

“Then why did my father write that I should not trust you?”

Samuel’s eyes changed.

“Thomas?”

“You know he is alive.”

Samuel looked toward the door.

“Lock it.”

Emily did.

He lowered his voice.

“Thomas has been alive all these years.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I received letters.”

“Once every few years.”

“No return address.”

“Why did he stay away?”

Samuel looked ashamed.

“Because Richard threatened him.”

“With what?”

“You.”

Emily went still.

“Richard told Thomas that if he came back, you and Rose would disappear permanently.”

“Thomas believed him.”

“For twenty-nine years?”

“Richard died eleven years ago.”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t Thomas return after that?”

Samuel closed his eyes.

“That is the question I never got answered.”

Emily stood.

“So my mother stayed away because she was afraid.”

“My father stayed away because he was afraid.”

“Everyone keeps abandoning me and calling it protection.”

Samuel opened his eyes.

“I know how that sounds.”

“Then stop defending it.”

He nodded.

Emily showed him the photograph.

“Who took this?”

Samuel stared.

“I did.”

“Why?”

“Thomas contacted me six days ago.”

“He said he would come to the estate.”

“He wanted to see whether Vanessa had discovered the east wing archive.”

“Did you meet him?”

“For less than ten minutes.”

“What did he tell you?”

Samuel looked frightened.

“That Celeste has been lying.”

Emily frowned.

“About what?”

“Everything after 1998.”

Before he could continue, the door opened.

Daniel entered.

“Emily.”

She looked at him.

“Owen found Ryan.”

“Where?”

“Dead.”

The room went silent.

Samuel closed his eyes.

Emily felt cold.

“What happened?”

“Car crash.”

“Police think he lost control on Route 7.”

Samuel shook his head.

“No.”

Daniel looked at him.

“What?”

“Ryan was terrified of cars.”

“What does that have to do with anything?”

“He never drove.”

Owen entered behind Daniel.

His face was gray.

“My son had not driven in twelve years.”

Emily understood.

Someone had put Ryan in that car.

Owen looked devastated.

Samuel whispered.

“Vanessa is cleaning up.”

Daniel shook his head.

“We don’t know that.”

“Then Celeste is.”

The door opened again.

A hospital administrator appeared.

“There is a woman asking for Emily Carter.”

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“Who?”

The administrator handed him a card.

Celeste Vale.

She was waiting in a private chapel downstairs.

Daniel wanted security around her.

Emily agreed.

Celeste sat alone in the front pew.

She looked different.

No expensive coat.

No sunglasses.

No controlled smile.

She looked frightened.

Emily sat several feet away.

Daniel remained near the door.

“Ryan is dead.”

Celeste nodded.

“I heard.”

“Did Vanessa kill him?”

“No.”

“Did you?”

Celeste looked offended.

“No.”

“Then who?”

Celeste stared at the altar.

“My husband.”

Emily frowned.

“Vanessa’s father?”

“Yes.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“Charles Vale?”

Celeste nodded.

“Everyone thinks he is retired in Switzerland.”

“He isn’t.”

“Where is he?”

“I don’t know.”

Emily laughed bitterly.

“Of course.”

Celeste looked at her.

“Charles learned about Emily before Vanessa did.”

“He has been using her to finish what Richard started.”

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“What exactly did Richard start?”

“A takeover.”

Celeste folded her hands.

“Richard and Charles wanted full control of Ashbourne Holdings.”

“Eleanor blocked them.”

“Thomas blocked them.”

“Rose discovered the theft.”

“Then Thomas disappeared.”

“Rose ran.”

“And Eleanor had her stroke.”

Emily watched her.

“You make that sound connected.”

Celeste did not answer.

Daniel moved closer.

“Was my grandmother’s stroke natural?”

“I don’t know.”

“Was Thomas’s boating accident real?”

“No.”

Emily’s heart pounded.

“Did Charles help Richard make him disappear?”

Celeste closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

The chapel seemed colder.

“Where did they send him?”

“I don’t know.”

“You keep saying that.”

“Because Richard handled Thomas.”

“Charles handled the money.”

Emily looked at Daniel.

“Why would my father stay away after Richard died?”

Celeste opened her eyes.

“Because Charles replaced him.”

There it was.

The threat had not ended.

It had simply changed names.

Emily asked, “Why is Vanessa helping her father?”

Celeste’s expression broke.

“She doesn’t know the worst parts.”

“She thinks this is about inheritance.”

“She thinks Charles is protecting what belongs to us.”

“She believes Rose blackmailed Eleanor.”

“She believes Emily is trying to steal the company.”

“Who taught her that?”

Celeste looked ashamed.

“I did.”

Emily stared.

“You raised her on a lie.”

“Yes.”

“And now you are shocked she became dangerous.”

Celeste took the accusation silently.

Daniel asked, “What does Charles want now?”

“Control before September 18.”

“How?”

“The Ashbourne-Vale merger.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“I suspended negotiations.”

“You did.”

“Your board can override you.”

“Not without my vote.”

“Victor Hale has proxies.”

Daniel went still.

“How many?”

“Enough if Emily’s shares are disqualified.”

Emily understood.

The necklace frame was not only about stealing her inheritance.

It would change control of Ashbourne Holdings.

Celeste reached into her purse.

Daniel moved.

She stopped.

“Just a flash drive.”

Owen searched it first.

Safe.

Celeste handed it to Emily.

“Charles keeps encrypted records.”

“I copied these two years ago.”

“What is on it?”

“Payments.”

“Private investigators.”

“Security contractors.”

“Law firms.”

“People who monitored Rose.”

“People who monitored you.”

Emily stared.

“Me?”

Celeste nodded.

“Since you were eight.”

Emily’s blood ran cold.

Daniel looked furious.

“He watched her for twenty-two years?”

“Yes.”

Emily gripped the drive.

“Why didn’t he do anything?”

“Because as long as you lived quietly, you were not a threat.”

“Then I applied at Ashbourne Manor.”

“Yes.”

The anonymous letter had turned her into a target.

Emily asked, “Did Charles send the letter?”

“No.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Samuel?”

“I don’t know.”

Daniel looked at Celeste.

“Thomas?”

She slowly nodded.

“I think so.”

Emily’s heart jumped.

Her father might have brought her here.

“Where is he?”

Celeste looked toward the chapel door.

“If Thomas is alive and close enough to install cameras inside the mansion, Charles will find him.”

A phone buzzed.

Not Daniel’s.

Not Emily’s.

Celeste’s.

She stared at the screen.

Her face changed.

“What?”

Celeste stood.

“It’s Vanessa.”

Daniel held out a hand.

“Speaker.”

Celeste answered.

“Vanessa.”

Her daughter’s voice sounded calm.

“Mom, where are you?”

Celeste glanced at Emily.

“At the hospital.”

“Good.”

“Why?”

“Because I need you to tell Emily something.”

Emily stepped closer.

Vanessa continued.

“Tell her I know who sent the anonymous letter.”

Emily felt her pulse jump.

“Who?”

Vanessa heard her.

“Emily.”

“Who sent it?”

“My father.”

Celeste went white.

“That’s impossible.”

Vanessa laughed.

“Not Charles.”

Emily’s throat tightened.

Vanessa continued.

“Thomas.”

Daniel looked toward Emily.

Vanessa’s voice softened.

“He brought you back because he needs your inheritance.”

Emily gripped the phone.

“Where is he?”

“Closer than you think.”

“Where?”

Vanessa paused.

Then said, “Ask Daniel who signed your employment approval.”

Emily turned toward him.

Daniel frowned.

“I don’t personally approve housekeeping hires.”

Vanessa laughed.

“Exactly.”

The call ended.

Daniel immediately contacted human resources.

Emily’s application had been manually approved despite a hiring freeze.

The authorization came from the office of the estate’s private facilities consultant.

A man named Michael Hart.

Owen searched the contractor records.

Michael Hart had worked at Ashbourne Manor for eleven months.

He repaired security systems.

He had access to the east wing.

He had installed cameras.

Emily stared at his employee photograph.

Gray hair.

Tall.

Same face as the picture Samuel had taken.

Thomas Ashbourne had been inside the mansion for almost a year.

Living under another name.

Watching his daughter from the shadows.

Daniel checked the security logs.

Michael Hart had entered the property that morning.

He had never checked out.

Owen initiated a search.

They found his contractor badge in the old greenhouse.

Beside it was a phone.

The phone contained one unsent message addressed to Emily.

I am sorry.

I wanted to tell you before Charles found me.

The greenhouse door slammed.

Owen drew his weapon.

A figure moved behind the glass.

Emily stepped forward.

“Thomas?”

No answer.

Daniel pulled her back.

Security entered.

The greenhouse was empty.

Only one window stood open.

On the potting table lay the missing original trust ledger.

And beneath it was a recent photograph of Vanessa.

She was standing beside Charles Vale.

The date stamp was yesterday.

May you like

But Charles was not in Switzerland.

He was standing inside Ashbourne Manor.
