Chapter 19 - THE ORIGINAL LEDGER

No one spoke for several seconds.

Thomas stood near the window.

Rose stared at him.

Daniel’s face had lost all color.

Emily held Eleanor’s death certificate.

Richard Ashbourne.

Officially impossible.

Mia recovered first.

“Identical twins share nearly identical DNA profiles.”

Daniel looked at her.

“The test cannot distinguish them?”

“Standard paternity testing may not.”

Emily felt sick.

Rose stepped toward the man she believed was Thomas.

“Look at me.”

He did.

“Who are you?”

His eyes filled.

“Thomas.”

“Prove it.”

“I have told you things only Thomas would know.”

“Richard knew almost everything about us.”

Thomas looked wounded.

Rose did not soften.

Daniel asked Benjamin.

“What happened in 2001?”

Benjamin looked exhausted.

“Eleanor discovered Richard was still moving money.”

“She threatened to expose him.”

“Thomas returned secretly.”

“The brothers fought.”

“One died.”

“Which one?”

Benjamin looked at Thomas.

“I never saw the body.”

“Charles handled everything.”

Emily closed her eyes.

Charles again.

Mia contacted federal investigators.

Charles agreed to speak only if offered consideration.

No immunity.

He laughed when Daniel asked which brother died.

“You really don’t know?”

Daniel’s voice was cold.

“Answer.”

Charles smiled through the prison video screen.

“Ask Rose.”

Rose stared.

“I don’t know.”

Charles laughed.

“You should.”

Emily leaned toward the screen.

“Enough.”

Charles looked at her.

“Emily.”

“Which brother died?”

Charles studied her.

“Thomas.”

Rose gasped.

The man beside her shook his head.

“Lie.”

Charles continued.

“Richard killed Thomas in 2001.”

Daniel stood.

“My father became Thomas?”

“No.”

Charles smiled.

“Richard became whoever he needed to be.”

Emily looked at the man.

He appeared devastated.

Charles added, “The man with you is Richard.”

Rose stumbled backward.

Thomas reached for her.

She slapped his hand away.

“No.”

He looked broken.

“Rose.”

“Don’t say my name.”

Emily watched him.

The man who claimed to be her father.

The man who installed cameras.

The man who brought her back.

Could be Richard.

The man who framed Rose.

The man who threatened everyone.

But something did not fit.

Emily remembered the recording at the cabin.

He confessed cowardice.

He criticized Richard.

Maybe performance.

Maybe not.

She remembered Rachel’s video.

Rachel said she met Thomas years after Richard’s official death.

She would have known the difference.

Wouldn’t she?

Emily asked Charles.

“Rachel met Thomas after 2001.”

Charles’s smile faded slightly.

“She thought she did.”

That was not proof.

Then Emily remembered the photograph Eleanor had labeled.

THE PEOPLE RICHARD UNDERESTIMATES.

Thomas stood beside Rose.

A scar was visible on his right hand.

Emily turned toward the man in the room.

“Show me your right hand.”

He looked confused.

“What?”

“Show me.”

He held it out.

No scar.

Rose gasped.

Thomas looked at his hand.

Emily’s heart dropped.

Then he rolled his sleeve.

A scar ran along his forearm.

Rose shook her head.

“Thomas burned his palm in the nursery fire.”

Daniel looked at the photograph.

The scar should be there.

The man had none.

Emily backed away.

“You are Richard.”

He shook his head.

“No.”

“Then why don’t you have the scar?”

“Skin graft.”

Silence.

He pulled records from his pocket.

After the 2001 incident, he had undergone reconstructive surgery on his hand.

Could be real.

Could be manufactured.

Mia looked at Benjamin.

“Is there any definitive evidence?”

Benjamin nodded slowly.

“The original ledger.”

Emily frowned.

“We have it.”

“No.”

“The financial ledger is not the original ledger Eleanor meant.”

Everyone stared.

Benjamin continued.

“She kept a personal ledger.”

“Dates.”

“Names.”

“Private notes.”

“She recorded the twins’ fingerprints after a childhood incident because they used to impersonate each other.”

Daniel laughed in disbelief.

“Of course she did.”

“Where?”

Benjamin looked at Emily.

“The blue necklace opens the first compartment.”

“The second key is inside the white necklace.”

Emily froze.

The white necklace.

The one Vanessa planted.

Owen retrieved it from evidence under authorization.

They returned to Eleanor’s reading room.

Blue necklace opened the first mechanism.

White necklace fit a second hidden slot behind the portrait.

A deeper compartment opened.

Inside was a leather book.

Eleanor’s personal ledger.

Fingerprints had been preserved beneath clear tape.

Childhood prints.

Thomas.

Richard.

Federal forensic specialists compared them.

The man claiming to be Thomas waited.

Hours passed.

Emily sat alone in the hallway.

Daniel joined her.

“What if he is Richard?”

“Then my biological father is probably dead.”

“And I spent weeks letting the man who destroyed Rose call himself my father.”

Daniel nodded.

“What if he is Thomas?”

“Then Charles lied.”

“He has done that before.”

Emily looked at Daniel.

“What if I don’t care anymore?”

“You care.”

“I know.”

“That is the problem.”

Daniel smiled faintly.

She leaned her head back against the wall.

“You lost your company because of me.”

“I got it back.”

“You got arrested.”

“Terrible experience.”

“I do not recommend it.”

She laughed.

Then became serious.

“What happens after this?”

Daniel looked at her.

“The company changes.”

“Your family?”

“Hopefully learns to talk before hiding evidence inside architecture.”

Emily smiled.

“I meant us.”

Daniel went quiet.

Emily realized what she had said.

She almost corrected it.

Did not.

Daniel looked at her.

“I don’t know.”

“For once, I would like to find out without a trust clause, a kidnapping, or someone planting jewelry nearby.”

Emily laughed.

“That sounds ambitious.”

“I’m a CEO.”

“Former CEO.”

“Temporary detail.”

The forensic specialist entered.

They stood.

“We have a match.”

Emily’s heart pounded.

“The man identifying himself as Thomas Ashbourne matches Thomas’s childhood fingerprints.”

Rose cried instantly.

Emily exhaled.

Thomas.

Her father.

Not Richard.

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Then Richard really died in 2001.”

“Yes.”

Mia frowned.

“But if Richard died in 2001, who acted publicly as Richard until 2015?”

Everyone looked at Thomas.

He whispered.

“I did.”

Emily stared.

“You pretended to be Richard?”

Thomas nodded.

“For fourteen years.”

Rose looked horrified.

“Why?”

“To keep Charles from taking the company.”

Daniel laughed in disbelief.

“You became my father.”

Thomas looked at him.

“Yes.”

Daniel stared.

“You raised me?”

“No.”

“I stayed away as much as possible.”

“You were at my college graduation.”

Thomas closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

“You gave the speech at my wedding rehearsal when I almost married someone else.”

“Yes.”

“You let me think you were Dad.”

“Yes.”

Daniel walked away.

Emily suddenly understood why Thomas stayed hidden after 2015.

He had committed identity fraud for fourteen years.

Reappearing as Thomas would expose everything.

Thomas looked at Emily.

“I did it because Richard’s death would have triggered Charles’s takeover.”

Emily shook her head.

“Protection again.”

Thomas looked down.

“Yes.”

“At least we finally have the right word for it.”

He almost smiled sadly.

Federal investigators reopened Richard’s death.

Thomas confessed.

The brothers fought in 2001.

Richard pulled a gun.

During the struggle, Richard fell from a cliff behind Eleanor’s old coastal property.

Thomas panicked.

Charles arrived.

Instead of reporting the death, Charles proposed the impersonation.

Thomas agreed to prevent corporate collapse and protect Emily.

Another terrible bargain.

Charles later used the secret to control him.

The entire empire had been held together by one lie after another.

Emily looked at the original ledger.

Eleanor had known.

A final note appeared near the end.

If my sons continue choosing control over truth, the company should not remain a family throne.

Give the power to the people who build it.

Emily smiled.

“She predicted everything.”

Daniel read the line.

“She would like your employee trust.”

“I think so.”

The legal path cleared.

Charles’s leverage collapsed.

Victor’s proxies were invalidated.

Vanessa’s cooperation helped prosecutors.

The board scheduled a final restructuring vote.

Everything finally seemed ready to end.

Then Owen entered.

His face was grim.

“Charles escaped transport.”

Silence.

Daniel stood.

“How?”

“Vehicle collision.”

“Two guards injured.”

“Charles is gone.”

Emily’s stomach dropped.

Owen continued.

“He took one thing from the evidence vehicle.”

“What?”

“The blue necklace.”

Rose went pale.

Emily looked toward Eleanor’s ledger.

The necklace had already opened the compartment.

Why steal it now?

Thomas understood.

“There is a third compartment.”

Everyone turned.

“What is inside?”

Thomas whispered.

“Eleanor’s final will.”

Daniel stared.

“And what does it say?”

Thomas looked at Emily.

“I don’t know.”

Owen’s phone buzzed.

A message appeared from Charles.

MIDNIGHT.

ASHBOURNE MANOR.

EMILY COMES ALONE.

OR THE LAST WILL BURNS WITH THE HOUSE.

Emily looked at the clock.

11:17 p.m.

Forty-three minutes.

The final secret was back where everything began.

Inside the mansion.

May you like

With the man who had spent thirty years manipulating every person in her family.

And this time Emily had no intention of letting anyone else choose what happened next.
