Chapter 2 – The Husband's Greatest Mistake
The sound of tires screeching outside broke the silence.
A black luxury SUV pulled into the driveway.
Nathan Carter hurried inside.
He froze.
His wife, Isabella, looked terrified.
Emily sat safely beside Daniel.
Police officers had already entered the mansion.
"Nathan!" Isabella cried.
"Tell them she's lying!"
Nathan looked from Emily's bruises...
...to the cracked heel lying on the marble floor...
...then to the police officers reviewing security footage on a tablet.
His confidence disappeared.
"What happened?" he asked quietly.
Daniel handed him the tablet.
"Watch."
For nearly five minutes...
No one spoke.
Nathan watched his wife shove an eight-month-pregnant woman.
He watched her strike Emily.
He watched her grind the gold heel into Emily's hand while smiling.
When the video ended...
Nathan slowly lowered the tablet.
"You lied to me."
"I can explain!"
"No."
His voice cracked.
"You told me Emily was stealing from us."
"You said she attacked you."
"You told me she deserved everything."
He looked toward Emily.
"I'm sorry."
Emily met his eyes.
"I don't need your apology."
"I needed your protection months ago."
Those words hurt far more than anything the police could do.
