CHAPTER 2: THE SECRET VANESSA COULD NOT HIDE

The ambulance arrived first.
The paramedics examined Emily’s hand, checked the baby’s heartbeat, and placed her carefully onto a stretcher.
Adrian refused to leave her side.
As they prepared to carry her outside, Emily caught his sleeve.
“Mrs. Harper,” she whispered. “Protect her.”
Adrian looked toward the elderly housekeeper.
Mrs. Harper was standing near the staircase while Vanessa glared at her with open hatred.
“You betrayed this family,” Vanessa hissed.
Mrs. Harper shook her head.
“No. I protected it.”
The police separated them.
One officer began questioning the staff while another collected the security footage.
Vanessa kept insisting that the entire incident was a misunderstanding.
Then the detective asked a simple question.
“Why were the security recordings scheduled to be erased at midnight?”
Vanessa stopped speaking.
Adrian had returned from a business trip two days earlier than expected.
Vanessa had believed he would not be home until the following morning.
She had planned everything around his absence.
But the security footage revealed even more.
For weeks, Vanessa had been meeting privately with Adrian’s former financial manager, Lucas Reed.
Together, they had been moving money between shell companies, forging Adrian’s signature, and preparing documents that would make it appear as though Emily had stolen from the family trust.
The confrontation on the marble floor had not been random.
Vanessa had wanted Emily frightened enough to sign a confession.
When Emily refused, Vanessa lost control.
At the hospital, Adrian sat beside his wife’s bed as a doctor examined her injured hand.
“The baby is stable,” the doctor said. “But she needs rest and careful monitoring.”
Adrian released a breath he had been holding since he entered the mansion.
Emily looked at him.
“I tried to call you.”
“I know.”
“She took my phone.”
“I know.”
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
“The staff were terrified.”
Adrian gently touched her hair.
“They won’t have to be afraid of her again.”
A detective arrived at the hospital less than an hour later.
He carried a folder filled with financial records.
“Mr. Bennett, your sister’s actions tonight may only be part of a larger case.”
Adrian opened the folder.
His face darkened as he read.
Vanessa had not only tried to frame Emily.
She had borrowed millions against family properties she did not own.
She had used forged documents to secure private loans.
And she had promised those lenders control of Adrian’s company if he failed to repay debts he had never authorized.
“She was trying to take everything,” Emily whispered.
The detective nodded.
“And when she realized Mrs. Bennett had discovered the transfers, she tried to silence her.”
Adrian looked down at the final page.
It contained a list of scheduled wire transfers.
One of them was set to occur in less than two hours.
If the transfer went through, Vanessa and Lucas would disappear with nearly eight million dollars.
Adrian stood.
“Can you stop it?”
“We already froze the account.”
For the first time that night, a faint look of relief crossed his face.
Then the detective added one more thing.
“Lucas Reed has disappeared.”
Emily tightened her grip on Adrian’s hand.
Vanessa might have been trapped.

But her partner was still free.
And according to the security records, Lucas had entered the hospital less than ten minutes earlier.
