CHAPTER 1: THE WITNESS BEHIND THE WALL

The breaking glass came from the far side of the room.

Everyone turned.

A crystal vase had slipped from the hands of Mrs. Harper, the mansion’s elderly housekeeper. She stood beside the staircase, pale and shaking.

The woman in red—Vanessa—pointed at her immediately.

“What are you staring at?” she snapped. “Clean it up!”

But Mrs. Harper did not move.

For seventeen years, she had obeyed every command inside that mansion.

That night, she finally found the courage to disobey.

“I saw everything,” she said.

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“You saw nothing.”

Mrs. Harper reached into the pocket of her gray uniform and removed a small phone.

“I saw you lock the doors,” she continued. “I saw you take Mrs. Bennett’s phone. I saw you threaten every employee who tried to help her.”

The pregnant woman in the man’s arms was named Emily Bennett.

And the man holding her was her husband, Adrian Bennett—the legal owner of the estate and one of the most powerful property developers in the state.

Vanessa had been Adrian’s older sister.

For years, she had acted as though the mansion belonged to her simply because she had grown up there.

But after their father died, the property had legally passed to Adrian.

Vanessa had never accepted it.

She hated Emily from the moment Adrian married her.

Emily came from an ordinary family. She had no famous last name, no private fortune, and no interest in impressing wealthy people.

That made Vanessa despise her even more.

“She has been trying to steal this family from me!” Vanessa shouted. “She turned my own brother against me!”

Adrian did not look at her.

He carried Emily toward the sofa and carefully lowered her onto the cushions.

“Call an ambulance,” he ordered.

One of the staff members immediately reached for a phone.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“She is pretending! She always pretends!”

Adrian finally looked at his sister.

The expression on his face silenced the room.

“You stepped on my pregnant wife’s hand.”

Vanessa swallowed.

“She attacked me first.”

Adrian slowly turned toward the security monitor mounted near the library doors.

“Play the footage.”

The head of security hesitated.

Vanessa’s eyes darted toward him.

That tiny movement told Adrian everything.

“You knew,” Adrian said.

The security chief lowered his head.

Vanessa rushed toward the monitor.

“Don’t touch that screen!”

Two guards moved between her and the controls.

The footage began.

The room watched Vanessa pull Emily by the wrist.

They watched her shove Emily onto the floor.

They watched her order the staff not to interfere.

Then they watched the gold heel descend onto Emily’s hand.

No one spoke.

Vanessa backed away.

“That video has been edited.”

Mrs. Harper raised her phone.

“Then explain this recording.”

Her phone had captured something the security cameras had not.

Vanessa’s voice filled the room.

“When Adrian comes home, you’ll tell him you fell. If you say one word, I’ll make sure you and your baby leave this house with nothing.”

Emily closed her eyes.

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

Vanessa turned toward the nearest door.

But before she could escape, two police officers entered the mansion.

She stared at them in disbelief.

Adrian had not called them.

Mrs. Harper had.

And she had called them nearly twenty minutes earlier.
