Chapter 2 - The Footage

The emergency room smelled like antiseptic, wet clothes, and fear.
Marcus stood outside a treatment bay while doctors examined Theo for complications from the submersion.
Every time the curtain moved, he tried to see past it.
Every time a monitor beeped, his chest tightened.
Elena sat twenty feet away with an ice pack pressed to her cheek.
A nurse had cleaned the cut on her palm and wrapped her wrist where the stroller strap had sliced into her skin.
She had refused pain medication until the doctor confirmed Theo was stable.
Marcus had tried twice to speak to her.
Both times she had looked away.
Victoria sat in a chair near the vending machines, wrapped in one of Marcus's jackets.
She had regained control of her expression.
That made him more uneasy than her earlier panic.
"You're letting this get out of hand," she said.
Marcus stared through the treatment-room window.
"My son nearly drowned."
"Because of her."
He turned.
"Stop saying that."
Victoria's jaw tightened.
"You saw her beside the pool."
"I saw her soaked."
"Exactly."
"That proves she was in the water."
"It proves she was involved."
Elena lowered the ice pack.
"I was involved because I jumped in after him."
Victoria looked at her with open contempt.
"You always have an answer."
Elena stood.
"And you always need someone else to blame."
Marcus stepped between them before Victoria could respond.
"Enough."
Elena's eyes flashed.
"You don't get to say that to me."
Marcus froze.
The nurse at the desk looked up.
Elena's voice stayed controlled, which somehow made it more cutting.
"You didn't ask me what happened."
Marcus said nothing.
"You didn't check whether your son was breathing before you hit me."
His face tightened.
"Elena, I know."
"No."
She shook her head.
"You know now."
The difference landed between them.
Marcus lowered his eyes.
Before he could answer, Grant appeared at the end of the hallway carrying a sealed evidence pouch.
Victoria stood immediately.
Marcus saw the reaction.
So did Elena.
Grant walked toward them.
"I removed the SD card myself."
He held up the clear pouch.
"I also exported the local access log from the security hub."
Victoria forced a laugh.
"You make it sound like a murder investigation."
Grant did not smile.
"A baby went into a pool."
"By accident."
Everyone turned toward her.
Victoria realized what she had said.
Her eyes widened slightly.
Marcus stepped closer.
"By accident?"
"I mean if Elena didn't mean to do it."
Elena stared at her.
"You said I tried to kill him."
Victoria's lips pressed together.
"I was in shock."
Grant looked at Marcus.
"There is a family consultation room down the hall with a monitor."
Marcus nodded.
"Let's watch it."
Victoria moved in front of him.
"Theo is still in treatment."
"And the doctor said we should wait out here."
"This can wait."
"No."
Marcus's voice was quiet now.
Quiet was worse.
Victoria looked toward the exit.
A uniformed police officer had just entered the emergency department.
She immediately looked back at Marcus.
"You called the police?"
Elena answered.
"The hospital did."
The officer spoke with a nurse, then began walking toward them.
Victoria's breathing changed.
"Marcus, I need to talk to you privately."
"After the video."
"Now."
"After the video."
Grant led them into the consultation room.
Elena followed last.
The police officer remained outside after Grant explained that potential evidence was being reviewed.
Victoria sat closest to the door.
Marcus noticed.
Grant inserted the card into a reader attached to the monitor.
Folders appeared on screen.
Each was labeled by date and hour.
He selected the most recent file.
The screen showed the pool from an angle high enough to capture the patio, the lounge chairs, the hedge, and the shallow end.
The timestamp read 6:42:11 p.m.
The stroller was visible near the umbrella table.
Theo was inside it.
Elena was nowhere in frame.
Victoria stood beside the stroller wearing the same pale silk blouse she still had on.
Marcus stopped breathing.
Grant moved the cursor over the play button.
"Do you want audio?"
Victoria stood.
"This is absurd."
Marcus did not look at her.
"Play it."
The recording began.
For the first thirty seconds, nothing happened.
Victoria looked at her phone.
Theo kicked his legs beneath a light blanket.
A breeze moved the water.
Then Victoria glanced toward the house.
She looked toward the side gate.
She looked directly at the larger dome camera mounted above the patio doors.
Then she walked to the wall panel beside the sliding door.
Grant paused the video.
"That's the security control."
Marcus looked at him.
"What is she doing?"
Grant pressed play.
Victoria entered a code.
The red status light on the wall panel turned amber.
Grant's expression hardened.
"She disabled the patio feed."
Marcus slowly turned toward Victoria.
She stared at the screen.
"You gave me the code."
"For the alarm."
"Same panel."
"Why did you disable the cameras?"
Victoria said nothing.
On screen, she returned to the stroller.
She bent over Theo.
For one terrible second, Marcus thought she might lift him.
Instead she adjusted the blanket.
Then she looked around again.
Her hands closed around the stroller handle.
Marcus's fingers dug into the back of the chair.
Victoria pushed.
Not hard at first.
Just enough to roll the stroller away from the table.
It moved toward the edge of the pool.
Then she stopped it.
Marcus exhaled shakily.
Victoria on the screen stepped around to the side.
She placed one bare foot against the rear wheel.
She looked toward the house one more time.
Then she shoved the stroller with both hands.
The front wheels went over the pool edge.
The stroller tipped.
Theo disappeared into the water.
Marcus made a sound Elena would remember for the rest of her life.
It was not a word.
It was the sound of a man watching his entire reality break.
On screen, Victoria did not scream.
She did not run forward.
She stood perfectly still for almost four seconds.
Then she stepped backward.
Four seconds.
Marcus counted them without meaning to.
One.
Two.
Three.
Four.
The stroller sank.
Only then did Victoria begin shouting.
"Help!"
The recording captured her voice clearly.
A door opened off camera.
Elena ran into frame carrying a basket of folded towels.
She dropped everything.
She did not ask what happened.
She did not hesitate.
She jumped into the pool fully clothed.
The camera caught her disappearing beneath the surface.
Seven seconds later she came up with Theo against her shoulder.
The baby was limp.
Elena fought with the stroller strap wrapped around one wheel.
She tore her palm freeing him.
Victoria remained at the edge of the pool.
She never entered the water.
"Call 911!" Elena screamed on the recording.
Victoria picked up her phone.
But she did not dial.
She opened the camera app instead.
Grant paused the video again.
The room was silent.
Marcus stared at Victoria.
"You didn't call?"
She stood so quickly the chair scraped backward.
"That isn't what happened."
Elena laughed in disbelief.
"We are watching it happen."
Victoria pointed at the screen.
"It's edited."
Grant's face remained flat.
"It came directly from the camera."
"Then she planned this."
Victoria pointed at Elena.
"She knew where the hidden camera was."
Elena looked stunned.
"So I somehow made you push a stroller into a pool?"
"You could have set me up."
Marcus stepped toward Victoria.
"Stop."
She backed away.
"Marcus, think."
"I am thinking."
"No, you're panicking."
"I watched you put my son in the water."
Victoria's face twisted.
"You don't understand."
"Then explain it."
She looked at Elena.
Then at Grant.
Then at the closed door.
"Not in front of them."
Marcus's expression turned almost unrecognizable.
"There is nothing you can say privately that changes what I just saw."
Victoria's voice dropped.
"There is if you want to know why I did it."
Elena went still.
Marcus did too.
For one second, nobody moved.
Then the consultation-room door opened.
The police officer stepped inside with another detective behind him.
"Victoria Cross?"
Victoria turned.
The detective held up a badge.
"We need you to come with us."
Victoria looked at Marcus with a strange, almost pitying expression.
"Ask Elena what she found in your late wife's room."
Elena's face drained of color.
Marcus turned toward her.
"What is she talking about?"
May you like
Victoria smiled for the first time since the video started.
And Elena realized that even with the truth on camera, Victoria still had another weapon left.
