Chapter 11 - The Man Who Installed The Camera

Nobody watched the seventy-two-minute nursery recording in the house.
Detective Shaw refused.
The original device was bagged, cataloged, and transported to the digital forensics lab under police escort.
Marcus hated every minute of the delay.
He understood it.
He still hated it.
By late afternoon, he was back at the city apartment with Theo asleep against his chest.
The baby had developed a mild cough that made Marcus tense every time it happened.
The pediatric nurse assured him it was expected after the submersion and that his oxygen levels remained excellent.
Marcus believed the monitor more than reassurance.
Elena had gone to her sister's apartment across town after Detective Shaw finished interviewing her.
Before she left, she handed Marcus three pages of handwritten notes about Theo.
Feeding times.
Nap routine.
Favorite songs.
The way he rubbed his left ear when tired.
The fact that he would refuse peas unless mixed with sweet potato.
At the bottom she had written one sentence.
If his breathing changes, call the pediatrician first and panic second.
Marcus had almost smiled.
Then he saw his own reflection in the dark window and noticed the exhaustion in his face.
He looked like a man who had discovered that his life had been run by everyone except himself.
Grant arrived with a replacement phone and a security update.
"The estate is locked down."
"Who has access?"
"You, me, police."
"Nobody else?"
"Nobody."
Marcus looked at him.
"Not Victoria."
"Her credentials are dead."
"Not Daniel."
"No."
"Not my brother."
Grant hesitated.
Marcus noticed.
"What?"
"Your brother still has a physical key to the front entrance."
Marcus frowned.
"Elliot?"
"Yes."
"Change the lock."
"Already done."
Marcus nodded.
Then he looked up.
"Why did you hesitate?"
Grant sat down across from him.
"Because Detective Shaw asked me to review access records from the day after Isabel died."
Marcus felt his stomach tighten.
"And?"
"Your brother was at the house that morning."
"Of course he was."
"He arrived at seven fourteen."
"So?"
"The nursery camera was removed at nine twelve."
Marcus stared at him.
"Are you saying Elliot removed it?"
"No."
"Then what are you saying?"
"I'm saying he was present."
Marcus looked down at Theo.
He did not want another person to become suspicious.
Especially not Elliot.
His younger brother had stood beside him at Isabel's funeral.
He had held Marcus upright when the casket lowered.
He had slept on the guest-room sofa for a week because Marcus could not be alone in the house.
"Elliot did not kill Isabel."
Grant's voice remained careful.
"I didn't say he did."
"You were thinking it."
"I was thinking he may know who removed a camera."
Marcus closed his eyes.
The distinction mattered.
"Call him."
Grant shook his head.
"Detective Shaw asked us not to contact anyone connected to that morning until she speaks to them."
Marcus laughed bitterly.
"So now I am being managed by the police in my own family."
Grant did not respond.
Marcus looked at Theo again.
"Fine."
His phone rang.
Detective Shaw.
"We recovered the nursery video."
Marcus stood immediately.
"What is on it?"
"I want you at the lab."
"Tell me."
"Marcus."
Her tone stopped him.
"Come to the lab."
Forty minutes later, Marcus, Ruth, Grant, and Elena sat in a secure viewing room.
Elena had not wanted to come.
Shaw asked her because her timeline from Isabel's papers might help identify context.
The screen showed the hidden nursery at 6:21 p.m. the night Isabel died.
The room was empty.
At 6:43, the concealed bookcase opened.
Isabel entered.
Marcus's breath caught.
He had not seen moving video of his wife since her death.
For a second, the evidence disappeared and she was simply there.
Alive.
Her hair was tied back.
She wore a cream blouse and dark trousers.
She carried a blue envelope and a coffee cup.
She placed both on the changing table.
Then she sat in the rocking chair and covered her face with her hands.
Marcus looked away.
Elena stared at the floor.
Ruth silently cried.
The video had no sound.
At 6:48, the hidden door opened again.
Victoria entered.
Except she looked different.
Her hair was darker.
Her clothes were simpler.
Marcus recognized the woman from Ruth's old driver's-license photograph.
Vanessa Calder.
She and Isabel argued.
Their gestures were sharp.
Isabel pointed toward the blue envelope.
Victoria grabbed for it.
Isabel pulled it away.
Then Victoria did something none of them expected.
She began crying.
Not the theatrical tears Marcus had seen beside the pool.
Real tears.
She dropped to her knees.
Isabel stepped back.
Victoria clasped her hands as if begging.
Marcus stared at the screen.
"What is she saying?"
Shaw shook her head.
"No audio."
Victoria reached into her bag and removed a photograph.
She held it up.
Isabel looked at it.
Her expression changed from anger to shock.
Then to fear.
"Zoom in," Marcus said.
The technician enlarged the frame.
The photograph was partially visible.
It showed a man.
Marcus leaned forward.
His face went cold.
"That's Elliot."
Ruth looked at him.
"Your brother?"
Marcus nodded.
On screen, Isabel looked from the photograph to Victoria.
Then she shook her head violently.
Victoria stood.
She pointed toward the main house.
Isabel appeared to say one word repeatedly.
No.
No.
No.
Then Victoria picked up the coffee cup.
Marcus stiffened.
She carried it to the sink.
For a moment her body blocked the camera.
When she turned back, she was holding the cup again.
She handed it to Isabel.
Isabel did not drink.
She set it down.
Victoria left through the hidden door at 6:55.
Isabel remained.
She paced.
She opened the blue envelope.
She removed papers.
Then the hidden door opened a third time.
A man entered.
Gray hair at the sides.
Narrow face.
Owen Pierce.
Grant leaned forward.
"There he is."
Owen spoke urgently to Isabel.
He pointed toward the camera.
Then he pointed toward the blue envelope.
Isabel handed it to him.
Owen photographed each page with a small device.
Then he returned the originals.
Isabel wrote something in her notebook.
At 7:02, Owen left.
At 7:05, Isabel lifted the coffee cup.
Marcus stopped breathing.
"Don't."
The word came out before he could stop it.
The image of his dead wife raised the cup.
She drank.
Nothing happened immediately.
She packed the envelope into a leather bag and left the hidden nursery at 7:08.
The room remained empty.
At 7:12, the door opened again.
Victoria returned.
She went directly to the sink.
She picked up a small object from the drain.
Then she wiped the counter, the faucet, and the coffee maker with a cloth.
She searched beneath the chair.
She looked under the crib.
At one point, she came within inches of the hidden camera.
She did not see it.
At 7:18, she left.
Marcus stared at the screen.
His face had gone white.
"Isabel called me at 7:09."
Shaw nodded.
"One minute after she left this room."
"She sounded strange."
His voice broke.
"I asked if she was tired."
Nobody spoke.
He looked at the image of the empty nursery.
"I should have known."
Elena turned toward him.
"No."
Marcus looked at her.
"You could not see this camera from a phone call."
Her voice was firm.
"Do not turn her murder into another thing you think you controlled."
Marcus swallowed hard.
The technician advanced the file.
At 7:28, one final person entered the nursery.
Everyone leaned forward.
The man wore a dark suit.
He walked to the rocking chair, retrieved something beneath it, and placed it in his pocket.
Then he stood beneath the camera and looked directly into the lens.
Marcus stopped breathing.
It was Elliot Hale.
His brother.
Elliot reached up.
The screen went black.
The timestamp froze at 7:29:14 p.m.
Shaw paused the recording.
"The crash was reported at 7:31."
Marcus stared at the black screen.
"That's impossible."
"Why?"
"The crash site is twelve minutes from the house."
Shaw looked at him.
"Not if the crash happened earlier than it was reported."
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
"Who reported it?"
The detective opened the original case file.
"Anonymous caller."
"From what number?"
"The same prepaid number that called Isabel at 7:16."
Ruth covered her mouth.
Marcus looked at Shaw.
"Find my brother."
Shaw's phone was already in her hand.
Before she could dial, the viewing-room door opened.
An officer stepped inside.
"Detective, we found Owen Pierce."
Ruth stood.
"Alive?"
The officer nodded.
"Barely."
"Where?"
"Abandoned service tunnel beneath Riverside Station."
Shaw moved toward the door.
"Can he talk?"
"Paramedics say he keeps repeating one sentence."
"What sentence?"
The officer looked at Marcus.
"Elliot did not remove the camera."
Marcus froze.
"Then who did?"
May you like
The officer shook his head.
"Owen says Marcus did."
