Chapter 4: The Paper Before the Vows

Sofia remembered it slowly.

A private room before the ceremony.

Carmen entering with champagne.

Javier smiling too brightly.

A folder placed on the vanity.

“They said it was just wedding paperwork,” Sofia whispered. “Something about combining emergency contacts and insurance.”

Alexander’s lawyer went silent.

That silence told us everything.

“What was it?” I asked.

The lawyer’s face tightened.

“Possibly a property authorization.”

Sofia looked sick.

“I didn’t read it.”

Alexander turned away, pressing his hand against the wall.

Not in anger.

In guilt.

Because he had protected her from everything except trust.

Within an hour, Victor found the document.

It had already been filed electronically.

Sofia had unknowingly signed limited authorization giving Javier temporary control over one asset.

Her condo.

Carmen had moved faster than any of us expected.

The transfer was scheduled to process by noon.

Sofia began shaking.

“I lost it.”

Alexander turned back.

“No.”

The lawyer looked grim.

“It may be difficult to stop before processing.”

Alexander adjusted his cuffs.

“Then we stop the people processing it.”

By 10:30 a.m., we were inside the title office downtown.

Sofia wore my coat over her torn dress. Alexander walked beside her. I held her hand.

Everyone stared.

No one spoke.

At the front desk, the clerk looked nervous the moment Alexander gave his name.

Then the manager appeared.

Then another lawyer.

Then a man in a blue suit who clearly wished he had called in sick.

Alexander placed the medical report, the police report, and the signed document on the table.

“This authorization was obtained through fraud and pressure,” he said. “Freeze it.”

The manager hesitated.

“We need a court order.”

Alexander leaned forward.

“You will have one in twelve minutes.”

The man in the blue suit laughed nervously.

“That’s not possible.”

Alexander looked at him.

“My daughter was attacked on her wedding night so your office could process stolen property before breakfast. I suggest you discover what is possible.”

No one laughed after that.

At 11:54 a.m., the emergency injunction arrived.

Six minutes before Sofia’s condo would have changed hands.

Sofia read the stamped order and broke down for the first time.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

She simply folded over into Alexander’s chest and whispered, “I thought I lost everything.”

May you like

Alexander held her carefully.

“No,” he said. “They lost you.”
